Amphetamine and methamphetamine are popular drugs of abuse worldwide and are important components of drug monitoring programs. Windows of detection for amphetamine and methamphetamine in oral fluid after high doses have not been investigated. Repeated high-dose ingestions are likely to cause positive samples for extended periods. Common routes of administration of amphetamine/methamphetamine in Norway are oral intake or injection. The aim of this study was to investigate windows of detection for amphetamine and methamphetamine in oral fluid from drug addicts under sustained abstinence during detoxification.

Twenty-five patients admitted to a closed detoxification unit were included in this study. Oral fluid samples were collected daily in the morning and evening, and urine every morning for 10 days. A blood sample was drawn during the first 5 days after admission if the patient consented. Oral fluid results were compared with urine results to determine whether a new ingestion occurred. Oral fluid was coll week after ingestion of high doses. Such long detection times were, as far as we are aware, never reported previously for oral fluid amphetamines.

Obesity has been shown to affect the disposition of water-soluble medications in pediatric patients. There are no published data describing serum phenytoin concentrations in obese pediatric patients.

A retrospective descriptive study was designed that included patients from 2011 to 2013 between 2 and 19 years of age who received a dose of fosphenytoin with a subsequent serum phenytoin concentration, drawn 2-4 hours postloading dose. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and patients were categorized by BMI percentiles into underweight (<5th percentile), normal weight (5th-84th percentile), overweight (85th-94th percentile), and obese (≥95th percentile). Descriptive statistical analysis and comparisons between groups occurred to determine differences in serum phenytoin concentrations. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of body habitus on serum phenytoin concentrations.

One hundred ten patients met study criteria (male 51.8%, mean age 8.3 ± 4.9 years). Patient do not seem to be required in pediatric patients. Obesity does not affect serum phenytoin concentrations in pediatric patients after intravenous bolus fosphenytoin administration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vivo anti-inflammatory angiogenesis activity and in vitro cytotoxicity on normal and cancer cell models of a drug delivery system consisting of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanofibers loaded with daunorubicin (PLGA-DNR) that were fabricated using an electrospinning process. The PLGA-DNR nanofibers were also characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal fluorescence microscopy. In vitro release of DNR from the nanofibers and its corresponding mechanism were also evaluated. Sixty-five percent of the DNR was released in an initial burst over 8h, and by 1224 h, eighty-five percent of the DNR had been released. see more The Higuchi model yielded the best fit to the DNR release profile over the first 8h, and the corresponding data from 24 to 1224 h could be modeled using zero-order kinetics. The PLGA-DNR nanofibers exhibited a higher cytotoxicity to A431 cells than free DNR but a cytotoxicity similar to free DNR against fibroblast cells. A higher antiangiogenic effect of PLGA nanofibers was observed in the in vivo data when compared to free DNR, and no inflammatory potential was observed for the nanofibers.Marine biofouling, caused by the adhesion of microorganism, is a worldwide problem in marine systems. In this research work, slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS), inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plant, was constructed over aluminum for marine anti-biofouling application. The as-fabricated SLIPS was characterized with SEM, AFM, and contact angle meter. Its anti-biofouling performance was evaluated with settlement experiment of a typical marine biofouling organism Chlorella vulgaris in both static and dynamic conditions. The effect of solid substrate micro-structure on anti-biofouling property of SLIPS was studied. It was suggested that the micro-structure with low length scale and high degree of regularity should be considered for designing stable SLIPS with exceptional anti-biofouling property. The liquid-like property is proven to be the main contributor for the exceptional anti-biofouling performance of SLIPS in both static and dynamic conditions. The low roughness, which facilitates removing the settled C. vulgaris under shear force, is also a main contributor for the anti-biofouling performance of SLIPS in dynamic condition. The functionalization of liposomes with glycosylated amphiphiles is an optimal strategy for targeted drug delivery, leading to enhanced efficacy as well as to reduced side effects of drugs. In fact, the presence of natural or synthetic glycolipids in vesicle formulations might increase their specificity toward lectins, a class of non-enzymatic sugar-binding proteins involved in cellular recognition and adhesion. The capability of a new glucosylated synthetic amphiphile to interact with Concanavalin A (Con A), a plant lectin used as model system, was investigated by a synergic experimental and computational approach, both as pure component and in formulation with a natural phospholipid. The comparison of the affinity with Con A of the new glucosylated amphiphile with respect to that of a previously described structural analogue demonstrates that the hydrophilic spacer length controls the exposure of the glucose residue on liposome surface, and consequently the recognition by the lectin.Nanotoxicology has emerged as an important subdiscipline of nanotechnology due to the new healthy risks associated with the use of nanosystems for therapy and diagnostic. The biocompatibility of four stimuli-responsive nanohydrogel (NG) formulations based on different proportions of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA) and 2-acrylamidoethyl carbamate (2AAECM), and cross-linked with N,N-cystaminebisacrylamide (CBA) or N-methylenebisacrylamide (NMBA) has been evaluated after intravenous injection in Wistar rats. All nanohydrogels were pH-sensitive, and those with CBA were also glutathione-responsive. Haematological and coagulation parameters revealed most nanogel formulations did not cause modification, only the NHA 80/15/5-CBA formulation induced a transitory light increase in platelets. Prothrombin time was in the reference normal range, there were no modifications of fibrinogen concentration and an increase in antithrombin III was observed on the last day of the study. Blood biochemical parameters such as AST, ALT, ALP, BUN, and creatinine were in the standard range for rats. The activity of enzyme antioxidant defences (SOD, CAT and GSSG-R) and total glutathione were evaluated in liver, kidney and spleen samples. Nanohydrogels cross-linked with the disulphide reducible CBA-cross-linker caused a decrease in GSSG/GSH content and an increase in GSSG-R activity in the spleen. The antioxidant response is also reflected by modifications of SOD activity in liver and kidney of NHA 80/15/5-CBA and NHA 80/10/10-NMBA groups. Histology showed no tissue damage, inflammation or morphological change in liver, kidney and spleen. Overall, the results demonstrated modifications of antioxidant defences; however, no acute or very significant changes in biomarkers of liver or kidney damage were observed. We report a simple and original method to synthesize gold nanoparticles in which a fungal protein, the hydrophobin Vmh2 from Pleurotus ostreatus and dicarboxylic acid-terminated polyethylene-glycol (PEG) has been used as additional components in a one step process, leading to hybrid protein-metal nanoparticles (NPs). The nanoparticles have been characterized by ultra-violet/visible, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, dynamic light scattering and also by electron microscopy imaging. The results of these analytical techniques highlight nanometric sized, stable, hybrid complexes of about 12 nm, with outer surface rich in functional chemical groups. Interaction with protein and antibodies has also been exploited.Factors influencing the performance of a continual-flow bioelectrical reactor (BER) intensified by microbial fuel cells for groundwater nitrate removal, including nitrate load, carbon source and hydraulic retention time (HRT), were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). With the target of maximum nitrate removal and minimum intermediates accumulation, nitrate load (for nitrogen) of 60.70 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 849.55 mg/L and HRT of 3.92 h for the BER were performed. COD was the dominant factor influencing performance of the system. Experimental results indicated the undistorted simulation and reliable optimized values. These demonstrate that RSM is an effective method to evaluate and optimize the nitrate-reducing performance of the present system and can guide mathematical models development to further promote its practical applications. In this letter, we demonstrate a solution-based method for a one-step deposition and surface passivation of the as-grown silicon nanowires (Si NWs). Using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a mild oxidizing agent, the NWs' surface traps density was reduced by over 2 orders of magnitude from 1×10(13) cm(-2) in pristine NWs to 3.7×10(10) cm(-2) in DMF-treated NWs, leading to a dramatic hysteresis reduction in NW field-effect transistors (FETs) from up to 32 V to a near-zero hysteresis. The change of the polyphenylsilane NW shell stoichiometric composition was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showing a 35% increase in fully oxidized Si4+ species for DMF-treated NWs compared to dry NW powder. Additionally, a shell oxidation effect induced by DMF resulted is a more stable NW FET performance with steady transistor currents and only 1.5 V hysteresis after 1000 h of air exposure.

To investigate long-term suicide risk in individuals with no, one or more mental disorders.

In the Lundby Study, involving a total population of 3563 subjects, mental health and suicide risk were monitored over 54-64 years.

The long-term suicide risk in subjects with no, one, or more mental disorders was 0.3%, 3.4% and 6.2% respectively. For individuals with only depression, the risk was 6.0%, only alcohol use disorder 4.7%, and only psychosis 3.1%. However, when individuals had additional disorders, the suicide risks were 6.6%, 9.4% and 10.4% respectively. Each diagnosis per se was significantly related to increased risk of suicide. Men had a higher suicide risk in depression than women. Men who had alcohol use disorder in addition to depression showed a very high risk of suicide, 16.2%.

Long-term suicide risk was increased for depression, alcohol use disorder, and psychosis per se. For the latter two the diagnosis alone there may be a lower risk than previously estimated when there is no additional diagnosis. In men, depression in addition to alcohol use disorder should be treated vigorously in the work to prevent suicide.
