Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is an important tool for oncology research, with great clinical potential for the classification and monitoring of breast lesions. The utility of parameters derived from DWI, however, is influenced by specific analysis choices. The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate repeatability and curve-fitting performance of common DWI signal representations, for a prospective cohort of patients with benign breast lesions. Twenty informed, consented patients with confirmed benign breast lesions underwent repeated DWI (3 T) using sagittal single-shot spin-echo echo planar imaging, bipolar encoding, TR/TE 11,600/86 ms, FOV 180 x 180 mm, matrix 90 x 90, slices 60 x 2.5 mm, iPAT GRAPPA 2, fat suppression, and 13 b-values 0-700 s/mm2 . A phase-reversed scan (b = 0 s/mm2 ) was acquired for distortion correction. Voxel-wise repeat-measures coefficients of variation (CoVs) were derived for monoexponential (apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC]), biexponential (intravoxel incoherent motionesults suggest that stretched exponential representation is more repeatable than biexponential, with pseudodiffusion parameters unlikely to provide clinically useful biomarkers.Shark skin is predominantly specialized for swimming and protection, with the dermal denticle being the main structure associated with these abilities. The dermal denticle is a mineral structure with a unique morphology for each species, which allows its use as a taxonomic tool. Few studies have investigated the microscopy aspects of skin and dermal denticles, considering the high diversity of sharks. Here, we investigated the three-dimensional morphoquantitative aspects and mineral composition of dermal denticles in different regions of the angular angel shark, Squatina guggenheim, using scanning electron microscopy and dispersive energy system. With the microscopy, we were able to observe that the dermal denticle morphology changes according to the area it is located. It was possible to describe the dermal denticles individually, from root to the crown, highlighting all of their individualities. Through the dispersive energy system, we showed the proportions of each mineral found in the denticle, by area, demonstrating the composition and the particularities of crown, body, and root, where whitlockite was described for the first time in elasmobranchs. In this way, the present study presented the specificities of the dermal denticles of S. guggenheim, as well sought to understand the different structure functions for the animal, thus assisting future research in animal morphology. In recent decades, a multitude of therapeutic approaches has been developed for spinal cord injury (SCI), but few have progressed to regular clinical practice. Novel non-invasive, cost-effective, and feasible approaches to treat this challenging condition are needed. A novel variant of paired associative stimulation (PAS), high-PAS, consists of non-invasive high-intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and non-invasive high-frequency electrical peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). We observed a therapeutic effect of high-PAS in 20 patients with incomplete SCI with wide range of injury severity, age, and time since injury. Tetraplegic and paraplegic, traumatic, and neurological SCI patients benefited from upper- or lower-limb high-PAS. We observed increases in manual motor scores (MMT) of upper and lower limbs, functional hand tests, walking tests, and measures of functional independence. We also optimized PAS settings in several studies in healthy subjects and began elucidating the mechanisms of therapeutic action. The scope of this review is to describe the clinical experience gained with this novel PAS approach. This review is focused on the summary of our results and observations and the methodological considerations for researchers and clinicians interested in adopting and further developing this new method.

Outcomes of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) after development of distant metastases (DM) in the context of human papillomavirus (HPV) tumor status remain controversial in the literature.

OPSCC patients with DM treated between June 2015 and March 2019 were included from a prospectively enrolled database. Characteristics of DM including sites, episodes, and timing of disease were analyzed in addition to survival after DM.

Sixty-nine HPV-positive and 18 HPV-negative OPSCC patients with DM were included. The 2-year survival after DM was higher for HPV-positive patients (54.0% vs. 11.3%, p< 0.001). HPV-positive patients did not demonstrate greater episodes or sites of DM. Multiple sites of DM, early development of DM, and Charlson comorbidity Index were independently associated with worse survival after DM.

While multiple sites, early DM, and comorbidities were poor prognostic factors, OPSCC patients with distant progression can have substantial survival after DM, including M1 patients.

These may serve as a suitable model for understanding evolutionary processes leading to high genetic and ecological diversity in montane biodiversity hot spots. Here, we analyse the most comprehensive genetic data set of this group, comprising 315 specimens (all nine putative Ethiopian Lophuromys taxa sampled across most of their distribution ranges) genotyped at one mitochondrial and four nuclear markers, and thousands of SNPs from ddRAD sequencing. We performed phylogenetic analyses, delimited species and mapped their distribution and estimated divergence time between species (under the species-tree framework) and mitochondrial lineages. We found significant incongruence between mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies, most probably caused by multiple interspecific introgression events. We discuss alternative scenarios of Ethiopian Lophuromys evolution, from retention of ancestral polymorphism to hybridization upon secondary contact of partially reproductively isolated lineages leading to reticulate evolution. Finally, we use the diversity of the speckled brush-furred rats for the description of the main biogeographic patterns in the fauna of the Ethiopian highlands. This study aims to evaluate the effect of puerarin on performance, meat quality, and serum indexes of beef cattle under hot environment. Thirty-two bulls were divided into four groups and fed diet supplemented with puerarin at 0, 200, 400, or 800 mg/kg. Results showed that heat stress was employed for 54 out of 60 days, 400 mg/kg group declined serum cortisol (COR) contents, all treatments increased the contents of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total superoxide dismutase activity; in addition, glutathione peroxidase activity of 200 mg/kg group were enhanced, only 800 mg/kg group enhanced immunoglobulin (IgA, IgM, and IgG) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol contents compared with the control (p less then .05). Moreover, 400-mg/kg puerarin increased serum growth hormone levels compared with 200 mg/kg group but declined COR concentrations compared with 200 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg groups (p less then .05). More importantly, average daily gain and daily matter intake, and intramuscular fat contents of 400 mg/kg group were enhanced, but the shear force of beef in 400 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg groups were declined compared with the control (p less then .05). These findings indicated that supplemental with puerarin enhanced immune and antioxidant, and 400 mg/kg of puerarin improved performance and meat quality by normalizing levels of stress hormones and increasing intramuscular fat deposition of beef cattle under hot environment.

Skin cancer screening (SCS) is an important measure for secondary prevention of skin cancer, which is the most common cancer type worldwide. This study aimed to describe patient-reported quality of SCS in Germany according to the specialization of the performing physician and different patient characteristics.

Data from 1260 participants 35-65years of age (54.4% female) who underwent SCS and participated in National Cancer Aid Monitoring in 2019 were evaluated using chi-squared tests.

Waiting times for SCS from a dermatologist were significantly longer than those for other physicians (31.1 versus [vs.] 15.7days; P<.001). Each body area examined during the standardized inspection was examined significantly more frequently by dermatologists than by other physicians (eg, upper body, 96.6% vs. 91.7%; P<.001). Dermatologists more often offered consultation for skin cancer prevention (74.0% vs. 67.6%; P=.026) and provided written information (47.8% vs. 34.8%; P<.001). Patients with statutory insurance had to pay more frequently for additional services during SCS from a dermatologist than from other physicians (24.7% vs. 17.1%, P=.012).

Results of this study revealed differences in the provision of preventive information and the quality of visual examination during SCS between dermatologists and other physicians. These results highlight the need for quality assurance measures.

Chronic pain is not well understood in opioid-dependent populations. We report the prevalence of chronic pain and pain characteristics in an opioid-dependent population by treatment type and gender.

This cross-sectional study opportunistically recruited 569 patients (32% women) receiving treatment for opioid use disorder (DSM-5) in Norway during 2016-2018 (83% received opioid maintenance treatment, 17% received treatment without medication). We asked about chronic pain (≥3 months; ICD-11), pain severity (NRS-11), and other pain characteristics.

Overall, 55% reported chronic pain (≥3 months), with a higher prevalence among women (61% vs 52%, P = .041) and patients receiving methadone (66%) compared with buprenorphine or no medication (46% and 45%, P < .001). Chronic pain was associated with higher age (P < .001) and higher doses of methadone (P = .048). The average duration of pain was 11 years. The most frequently reported pain locations were the lower extremities (59%) and the back (54%), and 69%everity, and interactions between medication type and age. (© 2021 The Authors. However, its molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we found that intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) are low in the SP compared to the MP. Hydrogen peroxide induces large H- and RS-like cells in HL cell lines, but induces cell death in unrelated lymphoid cell lines. Microarray analyses revealed the enrichment of upregulated genes under hypoxic conditions in the SP compared to the MP, and we verified that the SP cells are hypoxic. Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α was preferentially expressed in the SP. CoCl2 , a HIF-1α stabilizer, blunted the effect of hydrogen peroxide. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a scavenger of ROS, was triggered by HIF-1α. The effect of hydrogen peroxide was inhibited by HO-1 induction, whereas it was promoted by HO-1 knockdown. HO-1 inhibition by zinc protoporphyrin promoted the differentiation and increased ROS.
