In temperate rice cultivation regions, japonica rice cultivars are grown preferentially because consumers deem them to have good eating quality, whereas indica rice cultivars have high grain yields and strong heat tolerance but are considered to have poor eating quality. To mitigate the effects of global warming on rice production, it is important to develop novel rice cultivars with both desirable eating quality and resilience to high temperatures. Eating quality and agronomic traits were evaluated in a reciprocal set of chromosome segment substitution lines derived from crosses between a japonica rice cultivar 'Koshihikari' and an indica rice cultivar 'Takanari'.

We detected 112 QTLs for amylose and protein contents, whiteness, stickiness, hardness and eating quality of cooked rice grains. Almost of 'Koshihikari' chromosome segments consistently improved eating quality. Among detected QTLs, six QTLs on chromosomes 1-5 and 11 were detected that increased whiteness and stickiness of cooked grains or decretivars. These QTLs appear to be widely distributed among indica cultivars and to be novel genetic factors for eating quality traits because their chromosome regions differed from those of the GBSSI (Wx) and SSIIa (Alk) genes. The detected QTLs would be very useful for improvement of eating quality of indica rice cultivars in breeding programs. This is a survey study concerning osteoporosis care during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands. Respondents reported that osteoporosis care stagnated and lower quality of care was provided. This leads to the conclusion that standardization of osteoporosis care delivery in situations of crisis is needed.

During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no guidance of professional societies or guidelines on the organization of osteoporosis care in case of such a crisis, and treatment relied on local ad hoc strategies. Experiences from the current pandemic need to be taken into account for the near future, and therefore, a national multidisciplinary survey was carried out in the Netherlands.

A survey of 17 questions concerning the continuation of bone mineral density measurements by Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), outpatient clinic visits, and prescription of medication was sent to physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants working in the field of osteoporosis.

ring the COVID-19 pandemic, osteoporosis care almost completely arrested, especially because of the discontinuation of DXA-scanning and closing of outpatient clinics. More than half of the respondents reported a substantial lower quality of osteoporosis care during the COVID pandemic. To prevent an increase in fracture rates and a decrease in patient motivation, adherence and satisfaction, standardization of osteoporosis care delivery in situations of crisis is needed.Bone remodeling markers exhibit marked inter-ethnic variation; hence, population-specific data are required. Herein, we have established age- and sex-specific concentrations of serum PINP and CTX in healthy Indian adults with and without vitamin D deficiency that can be used in clinical practice for monitoring response to anti-osteoporotic therapy.

The present study was undertaken to generate data on age- and sex-specific concentrations of serum procollagen type I N-propeptide (PINP) and type I collagen C-telopeptide (CTX) in healthy Indian adults with and without vitamin D deficiency.

Apparently, healthy subjects aged ≥ 20 years with no prior co-morbidities were recruited from thecommunity by door-to-door surveys. Provisionally eligible participants underwent blood sampling after overnight fast. Individuals with biochemical abnormalities that could potentially affect bone remodeling were excluded. However, subjects with vitamin D deficiency were not excluded. Serum total PINP and β-CrossLaps (CTX) were me anti-osteoporotic therapy amongst native Indians.

The present study has allowed us to generate data on serum concentrations of PINP/CTX in a diverse group of healthy community-dwelling Indian adults with varying serum vitamin D levels. It might aid in monitoring response to anti-osteoporotic therapy amongst native Indians. An environment co-contaminated with metals and antibiotics ultimately exposes bacteria to these metals and antibiotics simultaneously. This study aims to explore the efficacy of sublethal concentrations of copper ions contaminated with tetracycline regarding antibiotic resistance in a sensitive strain of E. coli K12. The study proved that a copper ions and tetracycline co-contaminated environment could considerably enhance the mutation frequencies of chloramphenicol and polymyxin B resistance in antibiotic susceptible E. coli; however, the equivalent copper ions and tetracycline alone showed weaker effects. Results also demonstrated that an environment co-contaminated with relatively high sublethal concentrations of copper ion and tetracycline co-contaminated environment could induce much higher antibiotic resistance than the low sublethal and control groups. Whole-genome characterization results indicated that variability existed within the genotype and phenotype involved in antibiotic resistance. Additionally, the evolved resistant strains displayed hereditary resistance after 5 round culture cycles in LB broth over 5 days. Results implied that co-contamination with metals and antibiotics environment could strengthen resistance and contribute to the induction and dissemination of antibiotic resistance in metal and antibiotic co-contaminated environment.Cognitive performance and affective-like responses are particularly susceptible to decline during the aging process. Since imidazoline receptors I2 are altered in neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, the pharmacological modulation of I2 receptors could be of potential interest to improve these age-related behavioral deficits. In this context, the present study explored the potential pro-cognitive as well as antidepressant-like effects of two potent I2 agonists, 2-BFI (2-(2-benzofuranyl)-2-imidazoline), and tracizoline (2-styryl-4,5-dihydro-lH-imidazole, also known as LSL 61122 or valldemossine) in middle-aged male rats. Following a preliminary study performed to select a dose regimen capable of inducing neuroplastic events (i.e., regulation of hippocampal FADD cell fate adaptor), 2-BFI or tracizoline (10 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered to 9-10-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats. Cognitive performance was evaluated in the 8-arm radial maze and antidepressant-like responses under the stress of the forced-swim test. At the dose selected, 2-BFI and tracizoline did not alter body weight or cognitive performance. Interestingly, 2-BFI (but not tracizoline) induced hypothermia over the course of treatment and an antidepressant-like response in the forced-swim test. These compounds did not improve cognitive performance in middle-aged rats; however, 2-BFI exerted an antidepressant-like response. These results are in line with prior reports suggesting a beneficial impact induced by certain I2 ligands on affective-like behavior, while adding that the beneficial effects were mediated by increasing climbing behavior and with the novelty and importance of demonstrating this effect for middle-aged rats.In utero exposure to methamphetamine results in significant developmental, neurological, and behavioral deficits in offspring. However, very little is known about the cardiovascular effects of prenatal methamphetamine exposure in adult offspring. We hypothesized that prenatal methamphetamine exposure causes adverse cardiovascular effects in adult offspring. The aims of this study were to test the effects of prenatal methamphetamine exposure on blood pressure and endothelial function in male and female adult rat offspring. selleck chemicals llc Pregnant rats were injected with methamphetamine (5 mg kg-1 day-1) or saline throughout pregnancy. Conscious blood pressure and vascular function in mesenteric-resistance arteries were measured in male and female adult offspring using tail cuff and myography, respectively (beginning at 8 weeks old). In adult male offspring, but not in adult female offspring, endothelium-dependent relaxation to acetylcholine was impaired in methamphetamine-exposed compared to saline-exposed rats. Vascular relaxation to diethylamine NONOate diethylammonium salt was not impacted by gender or prenatal exposure. Prenatal methamphetamine exposure had no effect on systolic blood pressure in offspring of either gender. These data suggest that prenatal methamphetamine exposure adversely affects endothelial function in a sex-dependent manner. Clinically, these data suggest that adult males with a history of prenatal methamphetamine exposure may be at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease due to endothelial dysfunction.Abdominal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is known to cause both structural and functional damage to sciatic nerve which is related to the oxidative stress. We investigated the protective effects of mitochondria-targeted antioxidant (2-(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl-4-ylamino)-2-oxoethyl) triphenylphosphonium chloride (MitoTEMPO) on ischemia-reperfusion-induced nerve damage by using the conduction velocity distribution (CVD) calculations from in vitro compound nerve action potential (CNAP) recordings from rat sciatic nerve. Adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups. The IR and IR + MT groups had aortic cross-clamping for 1 h followed by 2 h reperfusion, while SHAM group had the same procedure without cross-clamping. IR + MT group received 0.7 mg/kg/day MitoTEMPO injection for 28 days before I/R, while other groups received vehicle alone. Ischemia-reperfusion resulted in a significant decrease (p  60 m/s). MitoTEMPO prevented that blockage and caused a shift in the CVD. Functional nerve damage caused by I/R can be prevented by MitoTEMPO, which can enter mitochondria, the main source of reactive oxygen species (ROS).The aim of this study was to identify social and farm factors influencing the knowledge of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), factors influencing participation in FMD vaccination, and vaccination coverage. The study was conducted with 180 traditional dairy farmers who were engaged in cattle and buffalo farming located in three veterinary ranges of the Ampara district in the eastern province of Sri Lanka, during September and October 2019. The probit and tobit regression models were applied to determine the factors. On an average, the scores for knowledge of FMD and hygiene management were calculated as 54.5% and 49.2%, respectively. Farmers' knowledge of FMD was strongly associated with gender, level of education, and participation in the farmer training program (p  less then  0.01). The vaccination behavior was enhanced significantly by the number of animals, farming experience, knowledge of FMD score (p  less then  0.05), and hygiene management score (p  less then  0.1). It was revealed that social and farm factors contributed to the knowledge of FMD and vaccination behavior. Therefore, we recommend that the livestock educational training program will motivate better participation in the FMD control plan in Sri Lanka. The search for better zootechnical indexes such as feed conversion, daily weight gain, uniformity, and lower bird mortality has become a priority within the poultry industry. The use of food restriction programs has emerged as an alternative to improve these rates as well as to mitigate the effect of the increased cost of nutrition over the past few years. In this work, the feed conversion (FC), daily weight gain (DWG), uniformity, and mortality of male broilers submitted to two food restriction programs were evaluated; one program reduced food by 10% and the other by 20% in relation to the feeding program suggested by the Cobb500 strain. One hundred and eighty birds aged 10 days old were housed in 12 boxes for 30 days. Fifteen birds were placed in each box, and four replicates per treatment were designed T1 (control group-feed intake as recommended by the Cobb500 strain), T2 (10% reduction), and T3 (20% reduction). There was no statistical difference in DWG, uniformity, or mortality between the treatment groups.
