Liquid biopsy based on circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a promising non-invasive tool for the prognosis of hepatocellular cancer (HCC). In this exploratory study we investigated whether cfDNA and gene variants associated with HCC may be found in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and thus identify those at an increased risk for HCC. A cohort of 40 LC patients with no suspect neoplastic lesions was included in this study. Next generation sequencing (NGS) of cfDNA isolated from plasma was performed on a panel of 597 selected genes. Images of the patients who underwent MRI with hepatospecific contrast media during the study period were retrospectively re-evaluated (imaging was not part of the prospective study). cfDNA was detected in the plasma of 36 patients with LC. NGS-based analyses identified 20 variants in different combinations. Re-evaluation of the MRI images that were available for a proportion of the patients (n = 27) confirmed the absence of lesions in 8 cases carrying cfDNA without variants. In 6 of 19 patients with identified variants and MRI images available, MRI revealed a precursor lesion compatible with HCC and new lesions were discovered at follow-up in two patients. These precursor lesions were amenable for curative treatments. Mutation analysis revealed selective HCC related gene mutations in a subset of patients with LC, raising the suspect that these patients were at an increased risk for HCC development. MRI findings confirmed suspect nodular lesions of early stage HCC not detected with current standard screening procedures, which were only seen in patients carrying cfDNA variants. This opens a perspective for an HCC screening strategy combining both liquid biopsy and MRI in patients with LC.In this work, the application in Radiofrequency Identification (RFID) of different additive manufacturing (AM) 3D-printing technologies is discussed. In particular, the well-known Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology is compared with the promising Digital Light Processing (DLP), which is based on the photopolymerization of liquid resins. Based on the research activity of the authors on this topic, a brief introduction to the fundamentals of 3D-printing in electromagnetics as well as to the different applications of both FDM and DLP in realizing Radio Frequency (RF) devices, is firstly given. Then, a comparison of the two technologies is deeply faced. Finally, after evaluated the rugosity of substrates produced with both techniques to verify the potential impact on the design of electromagnetic structures, the two techniques are both exploited for the realization of the dielectric parts of a tunable RFID tag with unconventional shape. It consists of two elements interlinked one each other. The movement between them enables tuning of the resonance frequency as well as the impedance of the antenna. Despite the differences in terms of losses, rugosity, resolution, and dielectric constant, both techniques guaranteed satisfactory values of tag sensitivity, maximum reading range, and tunability. Nevertheless, the careful analysis of the results proposed at the end of the paper suggests how the selection of one technique over the other must be taken considering the specific application constraints. Background The occurrence of hypertension has been increasing alarmingly in both low and middle-income countries. Despite acknowledging hypertension as the most common life-threatening risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), a dearth of data is available on the prevalence, awareness, and determinants of hypertension in rural parts of South Africa. BAY-1895344 The principal aim of the current study is to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of hypertension among a black rural African population from the Mtatha town of Eastern Cape Province. Methods This was a cross-sectional study, and individuals over 18 years of age were randomly screened using a World Health Organization stepwise questionnaire. Sociodemographic information, anthropometric measurements, fasting blood glucose levels, and three independent blood pressure (BP) readings were measured. Blood pressure measurements were classified according to the American Heart Association guidelines. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed tcant predictors of hypertension.A new method was proposed for the damage identification of box girder bridges under moving load, wherein the difference of strain influence line (DSIL) was taken as an index to represent the long-gauge strain difference before and after damage. The damage identification theory based on long-gauge strain influence lines was derived for box girder bridges with shear lag effect under consideration, and a regularized index DSIL was proposed for the quantitative identifications of damage location and extent. A series of experiments were carried out to study the influences of speed, vehicle type, and vehicle weight on the damage identification, and the experimental data were obtained by long-gauge fiber Bragg grating strain sensors. Moreover, numerical simulations were performed to confirm the method. The experimental and numerical results show that the method can locate the damage accurately, and quantitatively identify the damage extent under different working conditions. The experimental damage extent is generally slightly higher than the theoretical, with an average identification error smaller than 5%. Additionally, the relative error of damage extent is smaller than 3% under different working conditions. Thus, the effectiveness of this method was verified.Fruit by-products have a low economic value and have proven biological activities, such as antioxidant capacity due to the presence of active compounds. The main objective of this study was to obtain and determine the antioxidant capacity, through DPPH radical assay and β-carotene bleaching assay, of three food grade extracts from apple, lemon, and orange industrial by-products. Furthermore, the extracts were characterized by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). LC with diode array detector (LC-DAD) was used for the quantification of the main polyphenols. Lemon extract presented the highest inhibition percentage of DPPH radical (51.7%) and the highest total phenolics content (43.4 mg GAE/g) from the by-products studied. Orange by-product was that with the higher number of polyphenols while lemon extract was that with the highest content of individual phenolics. The by-product obtained from the lemon was that with higher amounts of hydroxycinnamic acids (407 µg/g of by-product), mainly chlorogenic acid (386.
