A two-year field study was conducted to quantify the gene flow from glufosinate-ammonium resistant (GR) soybean (Glycinemax) to its wild relative, wild soybean (G. soja), and assess the potential weed risk of hybrids resulting from the gene flow during their entire life cycle under field conditions in Korea, where wild soybean is the natural inhabitant. Pollen-mediated gene flow from GR soybeans to wild soybeans ranged from 0.292% (mixed planting) to 0.027% at 8 m distance. The log-logistic model described the gene flow rate with increasing distance from GR soybean to wild soybean; the estimated effective isolation distance for 0.01% gene flow between GR and wild soybeans was 37.7 m. The F1 and F2 hybrids exhibited the intermediate characteristics of their parental soybeans in their vegetative and reproductive stages. Canopy height and stem length of hybrids were close to those of wild soybean, which shows an indeterminate growth; the numbers of flowers, pods, and seeds per hybrid plant were close to those of wild soybean and significantly higher than those of GR soybean. Seed longevity of F2 hybrid plants was also intermediate but significantly greater than that of GR soybean due to high seed dormancy. Our results suggest that transgenes of the GR soybean might disperse into wild populations and persist in the agroecosystem of the genetic origin regions due to the pollen-mediated gene flow and the relatively high fitness of the hybrid progeny.Visibility in lakes can decrease due to increases in the amounts of suspended solids and algae, which inhibits the growth of submerged macrophytes. However, the understanding about whether illumination reduction affects the nitrogen-cycling microorganisms in the rhizosphere of submerged macrophytes, is limited. The abundance and biodiversity of nirS denitrifying and anammox bacteria in the rhizosphere of Potamogeton crispus were studied under 0% (natural light), 20%, 40%, and 60% shading treatments. The abundance of the nirS gene was highest under 60% shading treatment, while the anammox 16S rRNA gene was highest under 40% shading treatment. Moreover, the abundance of the two genes were lower under natural light than under shading conditions during most sampling periods. The quantitative ratio of the two gene (anammox 16S rRNA to nirS gene) abundance fluctuated wildly with the distance away from the roots, under natural light and 20% shading treatment. However, the ratio varied relatively little under 40% and 60% shading treatments. The diversity of nirS denitrifying bacteria was high in the rhizosphere, while the diversity of anammox bacteria was low, and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida was dominant. This study revealed that illumination reduction not only facilitated the growth of nirS denitrifying and anammox bacteria in the rhizosphere, but also weakened the competition between the two bacteria.The hydrological dynamics of the Saigon River is ruled by a complex combination of factors, which need to be disentangled to prevent and limit risks of flooding and salt intrusion. In particular, the Saigon water discharge is highly influenced by tidal cycles with a relatively low net discharge. This study proposes a low-cost technique to estimate river discharge at high frequency (every 10 min in this study). It is based on a stage-fall-discharge (SFD) rating curve adapted from the general Manning Strickler law, and calibrated thanks to two ADCP campaigns. Two pressure sensors were placed at different locations of the river in September 2016 one at the centre of Ho Chi Minh City and one in Phu Cuong, 40 km upstream approximately. The instantaneous water discharge data were used to evaluate the net residual discharge and to highlight seasonal and inter-annual trends. Both water level and water discharge show a seasonal behaviour. Rainfall, including during the Usagi typhoon that hit the megalopolis in November 2018, has no clear and direct impact on water level and water discharge due to the delta flat morphology and complex response between main channel and side channel network and ground water in this estuarine system under tidal influence. However, we found some evidences of interactions between precipitation, groundwater, the river network and possibly coastal waters. This paper can be seen as a proof of concept to (1) present a low-cost discharge method that can be applied to other tidal rivers, and (2) demonstrate how the high-frequency discharge data obtained with this method can be used to evaluate discharge dynamics in tidal river systems.High severity wildfires cause a drastic alteration of soil carbon cycling - both oxidising and thermally altering soil organic matter (SOM) - and usually are followed by strong runoff and erosion events. To restore wildfire-degraded soils, SOM needs to be rebuilt while soil erosion is prevented. Post-fire straw mulching has been shown to mitigate soil erosion by providing a protective cover against rainsplash. However, SOM takes many decades or centuries to rebuilt naturally. Biochar, co-applied with straw to the soil surface can replace the SOM of the O-horizon, while the stabilised soil - by straw mulching - may gain in SOM naturally and by downward movement of biochar. We conducted a field study to test if straw-only and straw-biochar co-application could restore soils degraded by wildfire in one high burn severity (HBS) and one moderate burn severity (MBS) study area in southern Portugal and Spain, respectively, by monitoring erosion and SOM for the most intense rainfall period of the first post-fire year.
