The aim of this study was to characterise the recent features of patients with infective endocarditis (IE) at one referral centre in southern Turkey, in order to be able to identify the high-risk subgroup and revise preventative measures and management strategies.

Medical records of patients 18 years and older, who had been diagnosed with IE according to the Duke criteria between January 2009 and October 2019, were retrospectively evaluated in a referral general hospital.

The total of 139 IE cases comprised 59.7% males and 40.3% females, with a mean age of 55 ± 16 years. The most encountered symptom was fever (55.4%) and the mitral valve (54%) was the most frequently involved. The most common causative micro-organisms were coagulase-negative staphylococci (30.2%). The in-hospital mortality rate was 30.2%, with congestive heart failure, chronic renal disease and chronic dialysis found to be significantly associated with in-hospital mortality.

The study results demonstrate the recent epidemiological features of IE in southern Turkey that are important for clinicians to manage diagnostic and therapeutic processes successfully. Older age, the predominance of staphylococci and higher surgery rates are consistent with the changing trends of IE in some parts the world.

Although it is primarily a respiratory pathogen, it can also result in several extra-pulmonary manifestations includes gastrointestinal symptoms, hepatocellular injury. Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) receptor and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2), the entry receptor for the causative coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is co-express in the gastrointestinal tract, hepatocyte, and cholangiocytes similar to the respiratory mucosa. The presence of these receptors facilitates the entry into the tissue and causes direct viral tissue damage, which is a proposed mechanism of injury. Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort are common gastrointestinal manifestations, whereas derangement of liver function tests is the most hepatic manifestation in COVID-19. Infection with hepatitis A virus can cause severe or even fatal illness in patients with chronic liver disease. Here we present a case which seems to be an isolated acute viral hepatitis A infection at the beginning but later found to be coexisted with Wilson's disease. A 14-year-old girl presented in the Department of Gastroenterology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh on 11th April 2019 with progressive jaundice with prodrome, dark urine, itching, hepatomegaly and thyromegaly. She was found positive for serum IgM HAV antibody. Her jaundice was increasing along with prolonged prothrombin time and low albumin. She had coexisting Wilson's disease evidenced by increased 24 hours urinary copper (138μgm/day). She was treated with D-Penicillamine and Zinc acetate. Hepatitis A can be considered as a factor for acute decompensation in undiagnosed patients with Wilson's disease. So it is very crucial to investigate Wilson's disease in appropriate clinical setting of prolonged jaundice and liver dysfunction.Treacher collins syndrome (TCS) or Franceschetti syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder with variable expressivity. It affects mainly craniofacial structure that derives from 1st and 2nd branchial arches approximately between the 20th day and 12th week of intrauterine life. This syndrome has different clinical types. Most common features are antimongoloid slanting of the palpebral fissures, hypoplasia of zygoma, maxilla & mandible with various eye and ear abnormalities. So, honey, a pioneer in traditional medicine was tried in the treatment against Escherichia coli to evaluate and compare the "in-vitro" antibacterial activity and efficacy of raw and commercial honey at different concentrations in comparison to tetracycline as a control on patient-isolated Escherichia coli and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) Escherichia coli 25922 strain from 5th Aug 2018 to 15th Feb 2019 at the Department of Microbiology, Rama Medical College, Kanpur (UP), India. The MIC and MBC of raw and commercial honey were determined by the broth dilution method, where raw honey exhibited both MIC and MBC at 512 mg/ml whereas, and commercial honey exhibited MIC at 512mg/ml and MBC at 1024 mg/ml respectively. While comparing the zone of inhibition of raw and commercial honey, it was observed that the raw honey showed almost equivalent potency and efficacy as compared to a positive control tetracycline (2.5%). There was statistically significant difference (p≤0.01) in zone of inhibition of raw and commercial honey at 100% concentration on patient-isolated Escherichia coli and ATCC Escherichia coli 25922 strain. Antimicrobial activity of raw honey at 100% concentration was equivalent to that of tetracycline and was significantly better than commercial honey.To develop, a reference charts of fetal abdominal circumference and femur length in normal pregnant women by using ultrasonography for Indian population. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 300 normal singleton pregnancies and was carried out in the department of Anatomy, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), India from September 2017 to April 2019. Also reference centiles (10th, 50th, 90th and 95th) were derived from this model and compared with similar studies done on different population. There was no statistically significant difference in age distribution of pregnant women (p=0.87). Both AC and FL were found to have statistically significant linear relationship with advancing gestational age (p=0.0005 & p=0.0003 respectively). There is significant difference observed between the values obtained in present study with studies concluded on Chinese and European population. Measurement of AC and FL are used to predict gestational age of fetus by using various regression formulae, also AC is known to be good predictor of nutritional status of fetus in utero. A separate chart is required for every different population because ethnicity, nutrition and environmental factor can have impact on normal values. Therefore, a reference chart for these parameters according to Indian population standards is essential to avoid misinterpretation of data. With the advancement in the knowledge and technology about the In Vitro fertilization (IVF) process, In Vitro fertilization success rates are improving over the time. In many cases of male-factor infertility, Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is the recommended treatment. The aim of this study was to estimate fertilization, implantation and pregnancy rates in ICSI cycles in association with number of attempts and sperm morphology. A total of 250 IVF-ICSI cycles were performed at a Fertility Center in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. This cohort study was performed during 2013 to 2015. The differences in the outcomes of ICSI in association with sperm morphology and number of ICSI attempt were evaluated. Significantly higher mean was observed in fertilization rate and live birth rate with ≥5% sperm morphology 79.63% vs. 71.46% and 20% vs. 13.9% respectively). Significantly higher mean implantation rate and clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and live birth rate were observed with attempt 3 as compared to 1 and 2 attempts. IVF success rates are improving over the time as knowledge and technology are advancing. Sperm morphology and number of attempt affect the ICSI outcomes.
