Forests contribute directly to ecosystem structure and functioning, maintaining biodiversity, acting as a climate regulator and reducing desertification. To better manage forests, it is essential to have high-resolution forest models and appropriate spatial-explicit variables able to explain tree cover at different scales, including the management scale. Most tree cover models rely only on broad-scale variables (>500 m), such as macroclimate, while only few studies include also local-scale variables ( less then 500 m). This study aimed to identify the importance of local-scale factors relative to broad-scale factors and identify the environmental variables at different scales that explain tree cover in oak woodlands in Mediterranean drylands. Sixty sites previously identified as being covered with Holm oak or Cork oak were stratified by precipitation. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, used here as a surrogate of tree cover, was modelled using simultaneously broad-scale factors (macroclimate) and local-ssuch as reforestation and afforestation plans to reverse evergreen oaks decline in Mediterranean drylands.Drought is a natural disaster that can influence all aspects of human life owing to its extensive and long-term implications. Global warming and rapid economic development have led to an increase in the drought risk. Meanwhile, rural communities are more drought-susceptible due to their greater closeness to nature and agriculture-based economies. Therefore, the scientific drought risk assessment and water resource utilization are of great significance. Drought risk refers to the potential losses from hazards imposed by drought events, which are a result of combined hazard, vulnerability, and exposure. This study focuses on drought risks in rural areas to provide references for risk assessment, disaster prevention, and water resource allocation. We chose the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (where is water-scarce and suffers severe drought disasters) as the study area. We used the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) to define the drought events and to extract the drought duration (D) and drought severity (S) according to the run theory. We also established three vulnerability curves based on the loss data, and assessed the risk of the primary industry, rural population, and cultivated areas, then superimposed it on the spatial distribution of water resources. The results indicated that Beijing has a high level of urbanization with a relatively low drought risk, and there are some high-risk areas in Tianjin and southeastern Hebei. Domestic water consumption is stable, and agricultural consumption has decreased. With the rapid increase in green areas in recent years, ecological water consumption has also increased. It has less water and a high-risk level of drought in southern areas. It is crucial to construct emergency water source projects for drought relief and make efficient use of limited water resources available. The distal lung (G14-G23), which are composed of alveoli and bronchi, are responsible for almost all gas exchange and micro- and nanoparticle deposition in the lungs. In the existing research using computational fluid dynamics, the geometric modeling accuracy of the bronchial bifurcation structure is given priority, and then the alveoli are attached to bronchi as discrete spherical crowns. This method ignores the correlation between alveoli. In fact, the alveoli have a tessellated distribution, and adjacent alveoli are connected by several alveolar pores. Due to the huge number of alveoli, this seemingly small difference will be greatly amplified, which may lead to a large deviation in the prediction of the overall flow. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to construct a two-dimensional distal lung model including the bronchi, acini, and alveolar pores by using the methods of regular hexagonal tessellational subdivision, fusion, and coordinate transformation. A moving boundary is introduced to simulate the process of airflow and particle deposition in the distal lung, and the effects of bronchial deformation, respiratory frequency, and alveolar pores are obtained. The results show that there are significant differences in intrapulmonary flow patterns with and without alveolar pores. Alveolar pores can establish bypass ventilation downstream of a blockage, thus providing a pathway for particles to enter the airways downstream of the blockage. Changing the respiratory frequency and the amplitude of bronchial deformation will change the relative velocity between particles and moving wall, which, in turn, will change the particle deposition efficiency in the distal lung. To summarize this study, a geometric modeling method for the distal lung with alveolar pores is established, and the important roles of detailed characteristics of the distal lung are revealed. The findings of this study provide a reasonable hydrodynamic mechanism for the prevention of related respiratory diseases.Electronic waste (WEEE; from TV screens to electric toothbrushes) is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. Prior to recycling, e-waste components (metals, wood, glass, etc.) are processed by shredding, grinding and chainsaw cutting. These activities generate fine and ultrafine particle emissions, containing metals as well as organics (e.g., flame retardants), which have high potential for human health impacts as well as for environmental release. In this work, release of fine and ultrafine particles, and their exposure impacts, was assessed in an e-waste recycling facility under real-world operating conditions. Parameters monitored were black carbon, particle mass concentrations, ultrafine particles, and aerosol morphology and chemical composition. Potential health impacts were assessed in terms of cytotoxicity (cell viability) and oxidative stress (ROS) on less then 2 μm particles collected in liquid suspension. Environmental release of WEEE aerosols was evidenced by the higher particle concentrations monitored outside the facility when compared to the urban background (43 vs.11 μgPM2.5/m3, respectively, or 2.4 vs. 0.2 μgCa/m3). Inside the facility, concentrations were higher in the top than on the ground floor (PM2.5 = 147 vs. 78 μg/m3, N = 15.4 ∗ 104 vs. 8.7 ∗ 104/cm3, BC = 12.4 vs. 7.2 μg/m3). Ventilation was a key driver of human exposure, in combination with particle emissions. selleck compound Key chemical tracers were Ca (from plastic fillers) and Fe (from wiring and other metal components). Y, Zr, Cd, Pb, P and Bi were markers of cathode TV recycling, and Li and Cr of grinding activities. While aerosols did not evidence cytotoxic effects, ROS generation was detected in 4 out of the 12 samples collected, associated to the ultrafine fraction. We conclude on the need for studies on aerosol emissions from WEEE facilities, especially in Europe, due to their demonstrable environmental and human health impacts and the rapidly growing generation of this type of waste. The spatial distribution of clinically important antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and associated genes is important to identify the environmental distribution of contamination and 'hotspots' of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We conducted an integrated survey of AMR in drinking water, wastewater and surface water (rivers and ponds) in three settings in Bangladesh rural households, rural poultry farms, and urban food markets. Spatial mapping was conducted via geographic information system (GIS) using ArcGIS software. Samples (n = 397) were analyzed for the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-Ec), carbapenem-resistant E. coli (CR-Ec) and resistance genes (blaCTX-M-1,blaNDM-1). In rural households, 5% of drinking water supply samples tested positive for ESBL-Ec, and a high proportion of wastewater, pond and river water samples were positive for ESBL-Ec (90%, 76%, and 85%, respectively). In poultry farms, 10% of drinking water samples tested positive for ESBL-Ec compared to a high prevalence in wastewater, pond and river water (90%, 68%, and 85%, respectively). CR-Ec prevalence in household wastewater and pond water was relatively low (8% and 5%, respectively) compared to river water (33%). In urban areas, 38% of drinking water samples and 98% of wastewater samples from food markets tested positive for ESBL-Ec while 30% of wastewater samples tested positive for CR-Ec. Wastewaters had the highest concentrations of ESBL-Ec, CR-Ec, blaCTXM-1 and blaNDM-1 and these were significantly higher in urban compared to rural samples (p less then 0.05). ESBL-Ec is ubiquitous in drinking water, wastewater and surface water bodies in both rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. CR-Ec is less widespread but found at a high prevalence in wastewater discharged from urban food markets and in rural river samples. Surveillance and monitoring of antibiotic resistant organisms and genes in waterbodies is an important first step in addressing environmental dimensions of AMR.Rainwater harvesting (RWH) projects in a decentralized way are significant measures to deal with the water scarcity dilemma in rural areas of the karst mountains in Southwest China at present. Due to the differences in cistern construction features and geomorphological positions, the water sources of cisterns were characterized by marked spatial variability, and the recharge stability of cisterns was strongly influenced by precipitation seasonality. Nevertheless, in hydrological processes on karst hillsides, the identification of different runoff types of RWH has not been sufficiently studied. The stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen of eleven cisterns and epikarst springs in subtropic cockpit karst landforms were monitored from 2020 to 2021 to investigate the runoff characteristics in RWH. Evaporative fractionation in different hydrological cycles is the predominant factor regulating the stable isotopic signature of cistern water. The results indicated that the typical roles that occurred in the recharge process contributed differently to water harvesting, with surface runoff (SR) and subsurface runoff (SSR) contributing much more than rainwater (RW) and epikarst runoff (ER). Three mixing patterns were proposed by end-member analysis in which SR + SSR, ER, and RW were three end members with indicators of isotopic value and the total dissolved solids (TDS). The recharge of SR + SSR was the predominated source, which contributed to 64% of the total water resources collected through RWH in the rainy season. In addition, the influence of various runoffs on the recharge stability of the cistern can be reflected by the multiple statistical analysis of isotopic fluctuation. Poor recharge stability is caused by excessive SR + SSR, whereas a higher percentage of ER and RW leads to better recharge stability. The applied method of hydrological process analysis is significant to the cistern water resources management in rural areas of the karst mountains.Cadmium (Cd) soil pollution is a global issue affecting crop production and food safety. Remediation methods involving in-situ Cd immobilization have been developed, but their effectiveness can diminish under seasonal freeze-thaw aging processes. In this study, we assessed the field performance of four soil treatments at a seasonally frozen rice paddy. Amendments were applied at 2 wt%, including (i) sepiolite (a 21 clay mineral), (ii) superphosphate, (iii) biochar (produced by rice husk at 500 °C for 2 h), and (iv) joint application of biochar & superphosphate (11 mixture by weight). Immobilization performance was determined as DTPA extractable Cd and plant uptake in various organs. Overall, the four treatments significantly reduced Cd bioavailability during the plant growth period, with average DTPA-extractable concentrations decreasing by 43%, 34%, 39% and 45% for the four treatments, respectively, relative to untreated soil (control). Rice grain yields from the superphosphate and the joint application treatments increased by 8.
