Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) data of similar continuously monitored species at two air monitoring sites with different characteristics within the City of Toronto were used to gauge the intra-city variations in the PM composition over a largely concurrent period spanning two years. One location was less then 8 m from the side of a major highway while the other was an urban background location. For the first time, multi-time resolution factor analysis was applied to dispersion-normalized concentrations to identify and quantify source contributions while reducing the influence of local meteorology. These factors were particulate sulphate (pSO4), particulate nitrate (pNO3), secondary organic aerosols (SOA), crustal matter (CrM) that were common to both sites, a hydrocarbon-like organic matter (HOM) exclusive to the urban background site, three black carbon related factors (BC, BC-HOM at the highway site, and a brown carbon rich factor (BC-BrC) at the urban background site), biomass burning organic mattors showed that the traffic-related factors likely originated along the main roadways at their respective sites while the more regional factors, - pSO4, pNO3, SOA, - had sources that were both regional and local in origin and with contributions that varied seasonally. These results will be useful in understanding ambient particulate matter sources on a city scale that will support air quality management planning.To alleviate inhibition of anaerobic digestion caused by capsaicin, which is easily soluble in the lipid components of food waste (FW), an advanced oxidation process with sodium percarbonate/ultraviolet (SPC/UV) was used to generate free radicals for degrading capsaicin and recovering methane production. Free radical sweeping showed that the free radicals OH, O2- and CO3- worked together to degrade capsaicin. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that capsaicin likely had four degradation pathways via conversion into benzoquinone, and finally into carbon dioxide and water. The degradation rate of capsaicin in lipids increased from 62.2% to 96.0% when the SPC concentration increased from 2 mmol/L to 32 mmol/L (UV intensity = 20.66 mW/cm2). The degradation rate increased from 70.9% to 94.6% when the UV intensity increased from 20.66 mW/cm2 to 46.86 mW/cm2 (SPC concentration = 4 mmol/L). The subsequent products after capsaicin degradation were subjected to anaerobic digestion either directly or by adding FW. The reduced intracellular oxidative kinases of anaerobic digestion microorganisms recovered the CH4 yield from 27.2 mL/g-total volatile solids (TVS) with capsaicin to 311.2 mL/g-TVS with degraded capsaicin, which was 40.7% that of the control group (765.3 mL/g-TVS without capsaicin). After adding FW, the CH4 yield of SPC/UV degradation effluent was 504.1 mL/g-TVS, which was 82.6% that of the control group (610.4 mL/g-TVS).Organisms in the marine environment are being exposed to an increasing variety of chemicals. This research presents an effect-based monitoring method for the derivation of a margin of safety for environmentally realistic chemical mixtures. The method is based on a combination of passive sampling and ecotoxicity testing. First, passive sampling was performed using H2O-philic divinylbenzene Speedisks during 3 sampling campaigns between 2016 and 2018 at 4 sampling locations in the Belgian part of the North Sea. Next, we exposed the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum to Speedisk extracts that were reconstituted in HPLC-grade water and defined the MoS of each sample as the highest no-observed effect concentration, expressed as relative enrichment factor (REF). A REF was defined by comparing the concentrations of 89 personal care products, pesticides and pharmaceuticals in the biotest medium with those measured in water grab samples to relate exposure concentrations in the tests to environmental concentrations. Across eight marine samples, diatom growth inhibition was observed at REF ≥ 3.2 and margins of safety were found between REF 1.1-11.0. In addition, we found that reconstitution of extracts in HPLC-water was suitable to overcome the solvent-related challenges in biotesting that are usually associated with passive sampler extract spiking, whilst it still allowed REFs up to 44 in the biotest medium to be achieved. This method, however, likely covers mainly the polar fraction of environmentally realistic chemical mixtures and less the non-polar fraction. Nevertheless, for 5 out of 8 samples, the Margin of Safety (MoS) was found to be lower than 10, which represents the typically lowest possible assessment factor applied to no effects ecotoxicological data in conventional environmental risk assessments, suggesting ecological risks for these samples.Changes in rhizodeposits of crops under elevated CO2 (eCO2) and elevated temperature (eT) may substantially impact on soil microbial community, which in turn affects soil carbon and nutrient cycling. However, the responses of soil bacterial community to long-term eCO2 and eT are not fully understood. A seven-year field experiment using open-top chambers was carried out with soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) and maize (Zea mays L.) grown in a Mollisol soil under ambient CO2 (380 ppm), eT (2.1 °C increase in air temperature) and eTeCO2 (elevated temperature plus elevated CO2, 2.1 °C increase in air temperature and 700 ppm CO2). Soil DNA was extracted for Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The principal coordinate analysis showed that changes of bacterial community structure due to eT and eTeCO2 were greater in soybean- than maize-grown soils. The eT increased the relative abundances of Gaiella and Bacillus in Actinobacteria and Firmicutes, but decreased those of Nocardioides and H16 in Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, respectively. The magnitudes of responses of seven genera sensitive to eT varied between soybean- and maize-grown soils. The eTeCO2 decreased the relative abundance of Bacillus and increased those of Gaiella, Streptomyces and Mizugakiibacter. The abundances of Gaiella, Gemmatimonas, and Mizugakiibacter under eTeCO2 were higher in soybean- than maize-grown soils. The redundancy analysis showed that soil organic C, moisture, nitrate, microbial biomass N and Olsen-P significantly affected soil bacterial community composition. All these results indicate that long-term eT increased the abundance of bacterial community and shifted their composition compared to the ambient control. In addition, the bacterial community composition under eTeCO2 was more stable in maize- than soybean-grown soils.
