Coated paper with a porous coating layer may have enhanced light-scattering ability and thus favorable optical properties. However, the increased porosity of such a coating layer is likely to decrease the strength of the coated paper, thereby adversely affecting the quality of the paper in the printing and converting processes. In this research, polymer-stabilized (PS) latex was prepared and used as a cobinder for the pigment coating of the paper. The PS latex particles were colloidally stabilized by a 31 mixture of starch and polyvinyl alcohol. The influence of the PS latex cobinder on the viscosity, sedimentation, and consolidation of coating colors was investigated. In addition, the effect of the cobinder on the properties of coating layers, namely, their porosity and surface, optical, and tensile properties, was examined. The results revealed that the PS latex cobinder formed microstructures in the coating colors and affected their viscosity. The addition of PS latex also led to enhanced interactions between coating color components, which affected the consolidation of the coating color, resulting in the formation of dried coating layers with greater porosity and improved optical properties (i.e., higher brightness and opacity) relative to coatings without the PS latex cobinder. GSK2334470 mw Furthermore, the addition of PS latex improved the tensile strength of the coating layers, which was attributable to the small size and the polymeric protective shell of the cobinder particles. Thus, these results show that this PS latex cobinder has the potential to be used for the production of high-quality coated paper products.CrpP enzymes have been recently described as a novel ciprofloxacin-resistance mechanism. We investigated by whole genome sequencing the presence of crpP-genes and other mechanisms involved in quinolone resistance in MDR/XDR-Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates (n = 55) with both ceftolozane-tazobactam susceptible or resistant profiles recovered from intensive care unit patients during the STEP (Portugal) and SUPERIOR (Spain) surveillance studies. Ciprofloxacin resistance was associated with mutations in the gyrA and parC genes. Additionally, plasmid-mediated genes (qnrS2 and aac(6')-Ib-cr) were eventually detected. Ten chromosomal crpP-like genes contained in related pathogenicity genomic islands and 6 different CrpP (CrpP1-CrpP6) proteins were found in 65% (36/55) of the isolates. Dissemination of CrpP variants was observed among non-related clones of both countries, including the CC175 (Spain) high-risk clone and CC348 (Portugal) clone. Interestingly, 5 of 6 variants (CrpP1-CrpP5) carried missense mutations in an amino acid position (Gly7) previously defined as essential conferring ciprofloxacin resistance, and decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility was only associated with the novel CrpP6 protein. In our collection, ciprofloxacin resistance was mainly due to chromosomal mutations in the gyrA and parC genes. However, crpP genes carrying mutations essential for protein function (G7, I26) and associated with a restored ciprofloxacin susceptibility were predominant. Despite the presence of crpP genes is not always associated with ciprofloxacin resistance, the risk of emergence of novel CrpP variants with a higher ability to affect quinolones is increasing. Furthermore, the spread of crpP genes in highly mobilizable genomic islands among related and non-related P. aeruginosa clones alert the dispersion of MDR pathogens in hospital settings.Urinary bladder cancer is a common urological cancer. Although flexible cystoscopy is widely employed in bladder cancer detection, it is expensive, invasive, and uncomfortable to the patients. Recently, urinary cell-free DNA (ucfDNA) isolated from urine supernatant has been shown to have great potential in bladder cancer detection and surveillance. Molecular features, such as integrity and concentration of ucfDNA, have been shown to be useful for differentiating bladder cancer patients from healthy controls. Besides, bladder cancer also exhibits unique genetic features that can be identified from sequencing and expression of ucfDNA. Apart from bladder cancer detection, ucfDNA is also useful for molecular classification. For example, ucfDNA exhibits significant differences, both molecularly and genetically, in non-muscle-invasive and muscle-invasive bladder cancers. There is no doubt that ucfDNA is a very promising tool for future applications in the field of bladder cancer.A series of substituted polybenzoxazines was synthesized and studied as binders in non-asbestos friction composite materials. The structures of the polybenzoxazines were varied in a systemic fashion by increasing the number and position of pendant alkyl (methyl) groups and was accomplished using the respective aromatic amines during the polymer synthesis step. By investigating the key thermomechanical and tribological characteristics displayed by the composite materials, the underlying structure-properties relationships were deconvoluted. Composite friction materials with higher thermomechanical and wear resistance properties were obtained from polybenzoxazines with relatively high crosslink densities. In contrast, polybenzoxazines with relatively low crosslink densities afforded composite friction materials with an improved coefficient of friction values and specific wear rates.Adolescence is the critical postnatal stage for the action of androgen in multiple brain regions. Androgens can regulate the learning/memory functions in the brain. It is known that the inhibitory avoidance test can evaluate emotional memory and is believed to be dependent largely on the amygdala and hippocampus. However, the effects of androgen on inhibitory avoidance memory have never been reported in adolescent male rats. In the present study, the effects of androgen on inhibitory avoidance memory and on androgen receptor (AR)-immunoreactivity in the amygdala and hippocampus were studied using behavioral analysis, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry in sham-operated, orchiectomized, orchiectomized + testosterone or orchiectomized + dihydrotestosterone-administered male adolescent rats. Orchiectomized rats showed significantly reduced time spent in the illuminated box after 30 min (test 1) or 24 h (test 2) of electrical foot-shock (training) and reduced AR-immunoreactivity in amygdala/hippocampal cornu Ammonis (CA1) in comparison to those in sham-operated rats.
