The evidence for the beneficial effects of physical activity (PA) and potentially detrimental effects of long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM
) on neurodegeneration diseases is accumulating. However, their joint effects remain unclear. We evaluated joint associations of habitual PA and PM
exposure with incident dementia in a longitudinal elderly cohort in Hong Kong.
A total of 57,775 elderly participants (≥65years) without dementia were enrolled during 1998-2001 and followed up till 2011. Their information on PA and other relevant covariates were collected at baseline (1998-2001) by a standard self-administered questionnaire, including PA volumes (high, moderate, low, and inactive) and types (aerobic exercise, traditional Chinese exercise, stretching exercise, walking slowly, and no exercise). Their annual mean PM
exposures at the residential address were estimated using a satellite-based spatiotemporal model. We then adopted the Cox proportional hazards model to examine the joint associ were oppositely related to incident dementia in the Hong Kong aged population. In order to control the impact of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) on the surrounding environment, including its employees, samples of wastewater and water from a river which received treated wastewater were analysed in terms of their content of antibiotics and heavy metals, levels of selected physiochemical parameters, concentrations of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) and genes of integrases. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of ARGs in the metagenomic DNA from nasal and throat swabs collected from the WWPT employees was made. Both untreated and treated wastewater samples were dominated by genes of resistance to sulphonamides (sul1, sul2), MLS group of drugs (ermF, ermB) and beta the presence of multi-drug resistant microorganisms in the air, which is a health risk to persons working in WWTPs. The aim of this study was to assess current perceptions of heat stress, fatigue and recovery practices during active duty in Australian firefighters.
Prospective survey.
473 firefighters from Fire and Rescue New South Wales completed a two-part, 16-item survey. Questions included perceptions of the operational activities and body areas associated with the most heat stress, the most mentally and physically demanding activities, and levels of fatigue felt. Further questions focussed on the use and importance of recovery practices, effectiveness of currently used heat-mitigation strategies and additional cooling strategies for future use.
Around a third of firefighters (62%) reported structural fire-fighting as the hottest operational activities experienced, followed by bushfire-fighting (51%) and rescue operations (38%). The top three responses for which body-parts get the hottest ranked as 'the head' (58%), 'the whole body' (54%) and 'the upper back' (40%), respectively. The majority of firefighters (~90%) stated they always or sometimes use the opportunity to recover at an incident, with the top three being 'sit in the shade' (93%), 'cold water ingestion (drinking)' (90%) and 'removing your helmet, flash hood and jacket' (89%). Firefighters reported higher usefulness for more easily deployed strategies compared to more advanced strategies. Limited age and gender differences were found, although location of active service differences were present.
These findings may inform future research, and translation to operational directives for recovery interventions; including exploration of protective gear and clothing, education, resources and provision of cooling methods, as well as recovery aid development.

Elevated manganese (Mn) exposure impairs cognition in adults and children, but the association between Mn and cognitive function in elderly people is unclear. Previous studies have linked Mn neurotoxicity in AD to Aβ-dependent mechanisms. However, the association between Mn and plasma APP and Aβ in the general elderly population remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the association between Mn exposure and cognitive function, plasma APP and plasma Aβ in older adults.
Cognitive abilities in 375 men aged 60 and older in Guangxi, China were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and cognitive impairment were identified using education-stratified cut-off points of MMSE scores. Urinary Mn levels and plasma APP, and Aβ levels were measured using ICP-MS and ELISA, respectively.
A total of 109 (29.07 %) older men were identified as having cognitive impairment. The median urinary Mn level was 0.22 μg/g creatinine. Urinary Mn levels were negatively correlated with MMSE scores (β = -1.35, 95 % CI -2.65 to -0.06; p = 0.041). In addition, higher concentrations of urinary manganese were associated with a greater risk of cognitive impairment (OR = 2.03, 95 % CI 1.14-3.59; comparing the highest and lowest manganese; p = 0.025). Moreover, plasma APP levels were inversely associated with urinary Mn levels (r = -0.123, p = 0.020), and positively associated with MMSE scores (r = 0.158, p = 0.002). Surprisingly, no correlations were observed between plasma Aβ42, Aβ40, Aβ40/Aβ42, or Aβ42/Aβ40 and urinary Mn levels and MMSE scores.

Pervious epidemiological evidence on the associations of selenium, zinc with lipid profile and glycemic indices was contradictory. The aim of this study was to investigate whether selenium and zinc were casually associated with lipid profile and glycemic indices using mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
A two-sample MR was used to evaluate the causal-effect estimations. Summary statistics for selenium, zinc, lipids and glycemic indices were retrieved from previous large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that independently and strongly associated with the selenium and zinc were selected as the instrumental variables. The casual estimates were calculated using inverse variance weighted method (IVW), with weighted median, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO test as sensitivity analysis, respectively.
In the standard IVW analysis, per SD increment in selenium was associated with an 0.077 mmol/L decrease of TC (95 %CI -0.102,-0.052) and 0.074 mmol/L of LDL-C (95 %CI -0nd increased serum HbA1c levels. Careful consideration is required for the protective effects of Se supplementation. Lead exposure all over the world has gradually declined. As fetuses are more prone to lead exposure, even to low levels of lead exposure, it is important to monitor blood lead levels (BLLs) in pregnancy.
We obtained data on BLLs in the third trimester of pregnancy from medical records and measured cord BLLs obtained from 121 mother-child pairs in Shenyang, China from September 2019 to February 2020. We also estimated relationships between socio-demographic, lifestyle and dietary factors during pregnancy as well as cord BLLs to identify the source of lead exposure during pregnancy. BLLs was estimated by atomic absorption spectrometry through graphite furnace ionization techniques. The data which obtained by questionnaires during pregnancy included maternal sociodemographic, lifestyle, dietary factors. We have established three multivariate logistic regression models in which the dichotomous BLLs was used as the dependent variable (cord BLLs ≥20 μg/L vs <20 μg/L).
The median and geometric mean of cord nese are still higher than most developed countries. Passive smoking is a risk factor for cord BLLs ≥20 μg/L and supplement of DHA, whole grains and beverage consumption during pregnancy may act as a beneficial factor against having cord BLLs ≥20 μg/L.
Cowpea is a crop widely used in developing countries due its rusticity. Besides its rich genotypic variability, most breeding programs do not explore its potential to improve elements uptake. Selenium (Se) is a scarce element in most soils, resulting in its deficiency being common in human diets. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between biofortification with Se and genotypic variation in cowpea, on the concentrations of Se in roots, leaves + stem and grains.
Twenty-nine cowpea genotypes were grown in a greenhouse in the absence (control) and presence of Se (12.5 μg Se kg
soil) as sodium selenate, in fully randomized scheme. The plants were cultivated until grains harvest. The following variables were determined roots dry weight (g), leaves + stems dry weight (g), grains dry weight (g), Se concentration (mg kg
) in roots, leaves + stems and grains, and Se partitioning to shoots and grains.
Selenium application increased the Se concentration in roots, leaves + stems and grains in all genotypes. At least twofold variation in grain Se concentration was observed among genotypes. Selenium application did not impair biomass accumulation, including grain dry weight. Genotype "BRS Guariba" had the largest Se concentration in grains and leaves + stems. Genotype MNC04-795 F-158 had the largest partitioning of Se to shoots and grain, due to elevated dry weights of leaves + stems and grain, and high Se concentrations in these tissues.
This information might be valuable in future breeding programs to select for genotypes with better abilities to accumulate Se in grain to reduce widespread human Se undernutrition.
