Ta-doped Li2ZnTi3O8 (LZTO) spheres (Li2ZnTi3-x Ta x O8; where x is the synthetic chemical input, x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) are synthesized via solid-state reaction using mesoporous TiO2 spheres as the self-template. The majority of Ta5+ ions are uniformly doped into crystal lattices of LZTO through the Ti↔Ta substitution, and the rest forms the piezoelectric LiTaO3 secondary phase on the surface, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction refinement, Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory, and electron microscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrates that the Ta5+ doping creates rapid electronic transportation channels for high Li+ ion diffusion kinetics; however, the LiTaO3 surface coating is beneficial to improve the electronic conductivity. At the optimal x = 0.05, Li2ZnTi3-x Ta x O8 spheres exhibit a reversible capacity of 90.2 mAh/g after 2000 cycles with a high coulombic efficiency of ≈100% at 5.0 A/g, thus enabling a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries with high power and energy densities.Utilizing high-pressure to modulate optical properties, such as thermoreflectance (dR/dT), over a wide range has received much attention. Nevertheless, how the pressure exerts on the complex dielectric constant and finally on dR/dT remains elusive. Here, we perform a thoroughly experimental and theoretical investigation on dR/dT of Al nano-film from 0 to 25 GPa. The dR/dT values exhibit a sine-like pressure-dependence, with the zero-crossing appearing at around 6 GPa. These special phenomena are well explained from electron transition viewpoints. The first-principles calculations show that the energy difference of parallel bands is enlarged from 1.45 to 2 eV, thereby increasing the threshold for electron transitions. The lifted threshold changes the optical absorption rates of Al and the density of states of the electrons involving interband transitions; finally, the resulting dR/dT exhibits such a pressure-dependent behavior. Our findings provide a deep insight on pressure-induced electronic transitions and photon-electron interactions in metals.Neurons in the visual cortex quickly adapt to constant input, which should lead to perceptual fading within few tens of milliseconds. However, perceptual fading is rarely observed in everyday perception, possibly because eye movements refresh retinal input. Recently, it has been suggested that amplitudes of large saccadic eye movements are scaled to maximally decorrelate presaccadic and postsaccadic inputs and thus to annul perceptual fading. However, this argument builds on the assumption that adaptation within naturally brief fixation durations is strong enough to survive any visually disruptive saccade and affect perception. We tested this assumption by measuring the effect of luminance adaptation on postsaccadic contrast perception. We found that postsaccadic contrast perception was affected by presaccadic luminance adaptation during brief periods of fixation. This adaptation effect emerges within 100 milliseconds and persists over seconds. These results indicate that adaptation during natural fixation periods can affect perception even after visually disruptive saccades.Trans-translation is a ubiquitous bacterial mechanism of ribosome rescue mediated by a transfer-messenger RNA (tmRNA) that adds a degradation tag to the truncated nascent polypeptide. Here, we characterize this quality control system in a genome-reduced bacterium, Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MPN), and perform a comparative analysis of protein quality control components in slow and fast-growing prokaryotes. We show in vivo that in MPN the sole quality control cytoplasmic protease (Lon) degrades efficiently tmRNA-tagged proteins. Analysis of tmRNA-mutants encoding a tag resistant to proteolysis reveals extensive tagging activity under normal growth. Unlike knockout strains, these mutants are viable demonstrating the requirement of tmRNA-mediated ribosome recycling. Chaperone and Lon steady-state levels maintain proteostasis in these mutants suggesting a model in which co-evolution of Lon and their substrates offer simple mechanisms of regulation without specialized degradation machineries. Finally, comparative analysis shows relative increase in Lon/Chaperone levels in slow-growing bacteria suggesting physiological adaptation to growth demand.Earthquakes occur thousands of times every day around the world. They are naturally destructive seismic events and often result in soil liquefaction. Soil microbiota plays a vital role in soil environments and may serve as an effective indicator to assess soil liquefaction after earthquakes. This study aimed to detect the microbial community abundance and composition in soil samples of different depths. Soil samples were collected in Southern Taiwan immediately after the 2010 earthquake. Their physical characteristics were determined, and their microbial communities were analyzed through 16S amplicon sequencing. Androgen Receptor Antagonist The results revealed that Nitrospirae phylum dominated in the liquefied layer. In particular, the genus HB118, dominant in the liquefied layer, was not detected at other soil depths or in the expelled liquefied soil. This finding not only provides valuable insights into changes in microbial community composition at different soil depths after earthquakes but also suggests a useful indicator for monitoring liquefied soil.Rosiglitazone, a synthetic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) ligand, has been reported to reduce growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in 10 patients with acromegaly. However, the mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we reveal that PPARγ directly enhances 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) expression, whose expression is decreased and negatively correlates with tumor size in acromegaly. Rosiglitazone decreases GH production and promotes apoptosis and autophagy in GH3 and primary somatotroph adenoma cells and suppresses hepatic GH receptor (GHR) expression and IGF-1 secretion in HepG2 cells. Activating the PGE2/cAMP/PKA pathway directly increases GHR expression. Rosiglitazone suppresses tumor growth and decreases GH and IGF-1 levels in mice inoculated subcutaneously with GH3 cells. The above effects are all dependent on 15-PGDH expression. Rosiglitazone as monotherapy effectively decreases GH and IGF-1 levels in all nineteen patients with active acromegaly. Evidence suggests that rosiglitazone may be an alternative pharmacological approach for acromegaly by targeting both pituitary adenomas and liver.HKUST-1@CMC (HK@CMC) composites that show good acid and alkali resistance and radiation resistance were successfully synthesized by introducing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto the surface of HKUST-1 using a foaming strategy. For the first time, the composites were explored as efficient adsorbents for U(VI) trapping from aqueous solution, with encouraging results of large adsorption capacity, fast adsorption kinetics, and desirable selectivity toward U(VI) over a series of competing ions. More importantly, a hybrid derivative film was successfully prepared for the dynamic adsorption of U(VI). The results show that ∼90% U(VI) can be removed when 45 mg L-1 U(VI) was passed through the film one time, and the removal percentage is still more than 80% even after four adsorption-desorption cycles, ranking one of the most practical U(VI) scavengers. This work offers new clues for application of the Metal-organic-framework-based materials in the separation of radionuclides from wastewater. The sex pheromone processing system of moths has been a major focus of research on olfaction and speciation, as it is highly specific and closely related to reproductive isolation. The two noctuid moths Heliothis virescens and Heliothis subflexa have been used as a model for deciphering the mechanisms underlying differentiation in pheromone communication, but no information exist regarding the functions of the pheromone receptors (PRs) of H. subflexa. Here, we functionally characterized all candidate PRs of H. subflexa, and found that only the response profile of OR6 differed between the two species. Through domain swapping and site-directed mutation followed by functional characterization, we identified a critical amino acid in OR6 caused a one-way alteration in specificity. This result suggests HsubOR6 evolved from an ancestral OR6 gene with a HvirOR6-like function and implies that the evolutionary direction of the receptor specificity was from the H. virescens-like pattern to H. subflexa-like pattern. The plasma membrane repair holds significance for maintaining cell survival and homeostasis. To achieve the sensitive visualization of membrane repair process for revealing its mechanism, this work designs a perforation-induced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) strategy by conjugating Raman reporter (4-mercaptobenzoic acid) loaded gold nanostars with pore-forming protein streptolysin O (SLO) to induce the SERS signal on living cells. The SERS signal obviously decreases with the initiation of membrane repair and the degradation of SLO pores due to the departure of gold-nanostar-conjugated SLO. Thus, the designed strategy can dynamically visualize the complete cell membrane repair and provide a sensitive method to demonstrate the SLO endocytosis- and exocytosis-mediated repairing mechanism. Using DOX-resistant MCF-7 cells as a model, a timely repair-blocking technology for promoting the highly efficient treatment of drug-resistant cancer cells is also proposed. This work opens an avenue for probing the plasma membrane repairing mechanisms and designing the precision therapeutic schedule.Vaccine development is challenged by the hierarchy of immunodominance between target antigen epitopes and the emergence of antigenic variants by pathogen mutation. The strength and breadth of antibody responses relies on selection and mutation in the germinal center and on the structural similarity between antigens. Computational methods for assessing the breadth of germinal center responses to multivalent antigens are critical to speed up vaccine development. Yet, such methods have poorly reflected the 3D antigen structure and antibody breadth. Here, we present Ymir, a new 3D-lattice-based framework that calculates in silico antibody-antigen affinities. Key physiological properties naturally emerge from Ymir such as affinity jumps, cross-reactivity, and differential epitope accessibility. We validated Ymir by replicating known features of germinal center dynamics. We show that combining antigens with mutated but structurally related epitopes enhances vaccine breadth. Ymir opens a new avenue for understanding vaccine potency based on the structural relationship between vaccine antigens.Comparing the nasal microbiome of healthy individuals and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients revealed Dolosigranulum pigrum as a species clearly associated with nasal health, although isolates obtained from healthy individuals are scarce. In this study, we explored the properties of this understudied lactic acid bacterium by integrating comparative genomics, habitat mining, cultivation, and functional characterization of interaction capacities. Mining 10.000 samples from the Earth Microbiome Project of 17 habitat types revealed that Dolosigranulum is mainly associated with the human nasal cavity. D. pigrum AMBR11 isolated from the nose of a healthy individual exerted antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, decreased proinflammatory cytokine production in airway epithelial cells, and Galleria mellonella larvae mortality induced by this important nasal pathobiont. Furthermore, the strain protected the nasal barrier function in a mouse model using interleukin-4 as disruptive cytokine. Hence, D. pigrum AMBR11 is a mutualist with high potential as topical live biotherapeutic product.
