The achievement of high-throughput separation and high-sensitivity detection of complex samples has been one of the most challenging issues in the field of analytical science. The application of a single technology alone could not satisfy the above requirements. The combination of technologies with the capability of high-efficiency separation and high-sensitivity structural-recognition is highly desired to meet the technical requirements. Herein, an automatic high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) hyphenated system using paper substrates as the "interface" was constructed to achieve efficient separation and real-time detection. A homogeneous Au nanoparticle was printed on the hydrophobic filter paper with the inkjet technology. The prepared substrates served as a linkage for the continuous realization of HPLC and SERS functions. The complex system was separated by HPLC, and the effluents were loaded onto automatically and continuously replaceable paper substrates for real time SERS measurements. The continuous rapid separation and real-time detection of various two-component mixtures were achieved with the separation efficiency and detection sensitivity of each technology. The results demonstrated that the HPLC-SERS hyphenated system exhibited the complementary capability of the on-line separation and continuous structural identification of illegal additives in real samples. The detection sensitivity was increased by an order of magnitude to reach 10-5 mol dm-3, and the efficiency and accuracy for the separation and identification on the multi-components samples were higher than those of the individual HPLC or SERS technology. It is believed that the continuous paper substrate-based HPLC-SERS hyphenated system would be developed as a promising technique for the separation and identification of multi-components mixtures with high throughput.

A critical and often-overlooked factor that may give rise to dandruff and oily hair is the intrinsic quality of the scalp stratum corneum (SC), which is often unbalanced and susceptible to external aggressions. Addressing the inflammation element of unhealthy scalp plays an important role in promoting healthy-looking and feeling hair. Although specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) have been studied in the skin to end the inflammation process and promote tissue regeneration, no studies have been provided in the scalp. Basic researchers have shown the reproducibility of key data from the lab is low and there is a clear need to improve lab protocol and technique.Provider- and claims-focused administrative databases are powerful tools for conducting health services research, and these studies often have good generalizability owing to diversity of hospitals from which samples are derived. In this research methods article, we describe administrative data and how available provider- and claims-focused administrative databases can be used to conduct health services research. We describe common observational study designs using administrative data and provide real-world examples. We highlight the strengths and weaknesses of studies conducted using administrative data and describe methodological considerations to reduce bias and improve the rigor of observational studies using administrative data. Finally, we provide guidance on the types of study questions suitable for observational study designs using administrative data.Electron transporting layer (ETL)-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibit promising progress in photovoltaic devices due to the elimination of the complex and energy-/time-consuming preparation route of ETLs. However, the performance of ETL-free devices still lags behind conventional devices because of mismatched energy levels and undesired interfacial charge recombination. In this study, we introduce sodium fluoride (NaF) as an interface layer in ETL-free PSCs to align the energy level between the perovskite and the FTO electrode. KPFM measurements clearly show that the NaF layer covers the surface of rough underlying FTO very well. This interface modification reduces the work function of FTO by forming an interfacial dipole layer, leading to band bending at the FTO/perovskite interface, which facilitates an effective electron carrier collection. Besides, the part of Na+ ions is found to be able to migrate into the absorber layer, facilitating enlarged grains and spontaneous passivation of the perovskite layer. As a result, the efficiency of the NaF-treated cell reaches 20%, comparable to those of state-of-the-art ETL-based cells. Moreover, this strategy effectively enhances the operational stability of devices by preserving 94% of the initial efficiency after storage for 500 h under continuous light soaking at 55 °C. Overall, these improvements in photovoltaic properties are clear indicators of enhanced interface passivation by NaF-based interface engineering.For indications where only unstable reference treatments are available and use of placebo is ethically justified, three-arm "gold standard" designs with an experimental, reference and placebo arm are recommended for non-inferiority trials. In such designs, the demonstration of efficacy of the reference or experimental treatment is a requirement. Eighteen biographical medical journal articles, published between 1952 and 2021, describe his life and contributions to medicine. Unmentioned, however, is an island in the waters of Shepherd Bay in northern Canada, now Nunavut, designated Bence Jones Island, by the British explorer John Rae in 1854. Rae had sailed from Great Britain to the regions extending north of Hudson's Bay in search of information regarding Sir John Franklin and 133 other officers and men who departed from the Kingdom of Great Britain in two ships in 1845 to search for the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean; they disappeared. In anticipation of Rae's voyage to search for evidence of Franklin's expedition, Bence Jones provided a special preparation of tea that could be drunk cold, if necessary. It was so meaningful to the crew of Rae's ship that it resulted in Rae naming an island near Boothia Isthmus in Shepherd Bay in recognition of this contribution to the contentment of his men under arduous conditions and in acknowledgment of Bence Jones's professional standing, upon which we comment. Dysregulation of apoptosis is observed across MDS subtypes regardless of mutations and represents an attractive therapeutic opportunity. Venetoclax (VEN), a selective inhibitor of anti-apoptotic protein B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL2), has yielded impressive responses in older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and high risk MDS. BCL2 family anti-apoptotic proteins BCL-XL and induced myeloid cell leukemia 1 (MCL1) are implicated in leukemia survival, and upregulation of MCL1 is seen in VEN-resistant AML and MDS. We determined in vitro sensitivity of MDS patient samples to selective inhibitors of BCL2, BCL-XL and MCL1. While VEN response positively correlated with MDS with excess blasts, all MDS subtypes responded to MCL1 inhibition. Treatment with combined VEN+MCL1 inhibtion was synergistic in all MDS subtypes without significant injury to normal hematopoiesis and reduced MDS engraftment in MISTRG6 mice, supporting the pursuit of clinical trials with combined BCL2+MCL1 inhibition in MDS.Iron overload (IO) reflected by elevated ferritin is associated with increased mortality in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), however, ferritin is an imperfect metric. Elevated labile plasma iron correlates with clinical outcomes and transferrin saturation (TSAT) >80%, but is not readily measurable. The trajectory of TSAT, and its association with clinical outcomes remain undefined. Canadian MDS registry patients were evaluated. Mean TSAT, mean ferritin and transfusion dose density (TDD) were determined. Survival was evaluated by TSAT and ferritin (80%), (≤500µg/L, 501-800µg/L, >800µg/L). In 718 patients, median age was 74 years. 12%, 31%, 29%, 15% and 13% were IPSS-R very low, low, intermediate, high and very high. TSAT and ferritin were moderately correlated (r=0.63, p80% trended with inferior cardiac death free survival (CDFS) (p=0.053). In univariate analysis, age, IPSS-R, blast percentage, performance status by ECOG, frailty, Charlson Comorbidity Index, iron chelation (Y/N), TDD, TSAT and ferritin were significantly associated with inferior OS. By multivariable analysis, TSAT >80% (p=0.007) remained significant for OS (R2 30.3%). In MDS, TSAT >80% and ferritin >800µg/L portended inferior OS, PFS and LFS. TSAT may indicate the presence of oxidative stress, and is readily measurable in a clinical setting. The relationship between TSAT and cardiac DFS warrants further study.
