Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and poly (vinyl) alcohol (PVA) were used as a biocompatible scaffolding material, and the composition was designed in such a way that it provides physical and biological property attributes. In this work, scaffolding materials with integrated layer structures and well interconnected and open pore structures were obtained. This bilayer structure had porosity with a pore size of 19.72 μm and 90.71 μm for the simulation of the epidermis and dermis, respectively. The production and expression of laminin, collagen IV, and keratin 10 proteins in the bilayer cryogel scaffolds obtained from the immunofluorescence study were 49.7 %, 63.8 %, and 49.3 %, respectively. The extracellular matrix (ECM) was produced in each scaffold layer. The observations confirmed that the porosity and pore size of both N1 and N2 layers were appropriate for the fibroblast and keratinocyte cells, respectively. H&E stained cross-sections of bilayer cryogel scaffolds illustrated epidermal and dermal layers produced by co-culturing keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Based on the results, the bilayer CNF/PVA scaffold can be used in skin tissue engineering applications. However, more experiments and in vivo evaluations are needed to express this conclusion more accurately.

To investigate the tissue factor (TF) expression on different subsets of monocyte and tissue factor secretion of peripheral blood and evaluate their association with the prognosis of sepsis in the Chinese older adult population.

Monocyte subsets and TF expression on different subsets of monocyte were measured using flow cytometry in 80 older adult sepsis patients and 40 age and sex matched healthy controls. Plasma level of TF was measured using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) method.

TF expression on CD14++CD16- (MO1) monocyte was lower in death (28-day non-survivor) group compared with survival (28-day survivor) groups [1.01% (0.58%, 1.62%) vs. 3.66% (1.32%, 6.93%), p=0.001]. The plasma level of TF was increased in death group compared to survival group according to the 28-day mortality [109.2 (67.3, 154.2) vs. 62.1 (44.7, 115.5) pg/mL, p=0.031]. Logistic regression analysis showed TF expression on MO1 monocyte (β=-0.776, OR=0.460, CI 0.251, 0.843, p=0.012) was independently associated with the 28-day mortality. The ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve showed that the AUC (area under the curve) of the TF expression on MO1 monocyte for predicting 28-day mortality was 0.846 (p<0.001).

Left ventricular gene expression (profiled via Illumina MouseWG-6 BeadChips), contractile and coronary function, and stress-resistance were assessed in Langendorff perfused hearts under normoxic conditions and following ischemic insult (20 min global ischemia-45 min reperfusion; I-R). Baseline or normoxic contractile function was unaltered by age, while cardiac and coronary 'reserves' (during β-adrenoceptor stimulation; 1 μM isoproterenol) declined by 48 wks. Resistance to I-R injury fell from 16 to 32 wks. Few multi-country European studies have investigated the association between grip strength and heart diseases incidence. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyse the longitudinal relationship between grip strength and the diagnosis of heart diseases in European middle-aged and older adults.

A prospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (2004-2017). Participants were 20,829 middle-aged and older adults from 12 countries. GS was objectively measured by a dynamometer and heart diseases diagnosis was self-reported. Incidence rate of heart diseases was calculated and a Cox proportional hazard regression was performed.

The heart diseases incidence rate decreased from 930 per 100,000 person-years in the lowest quartile to 380 per 100,000 person-years in the highest grip strength quartile. During the 13years of follow-up, compared to being in the lowest grip strength quartile, being in the highest quartile decreased the hazard of being diagnosed with a heart disease in 36% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.53, 0.78) for the whole sample, 35% (95% CI 0.51, 0.84) for men and 46% (95% CI 0.40, 0.73) for women.

Typically, facial emotional expressions have been studied in passive observation paradigms, while interactive mechanisms remain unknown. In the current study we investigate how sending a facial emotional expression influenced the evaluation of an emotional expression received in return. Sixty-eight participants were cued to direct a facial emotional expression (happy, angry, neutral) towards a virtual agent in front of them. The virtual agent then responded with either the same or another emotional expression (happy, angry). Evaluation of the response expressions was measured via ratings of valence and arousal as well as EMG recordings of the M. corrugator supercilii and the M. zygomaticus major. Results revealed a significant interaction between the emotion of the initial facial expression and the response expression. Valence of happy response expressions were increased when participants had initially displayed a smile compared to a neutral expression or a frown. This was also reflected in the EMG responses. Initiating an interaction with a smile increased Zygomaticus activation for happy relative to angry response expressions compared to when the interaction was initiated with a frown. In contrast, no interplay of the initial and the response expression was observed in the Corrugator. These findings demonstrate that smiling or frowning at another person can modulate socio-emotional processing of subsequent social cues. Therefore, the present study highlights the interactive nature of facial emotional expressions.In previous work, we reported on the design of biodegradable rhein-loaded PLGA microparticles for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Considering that a formulation designed for intra-articular administration must meet sterility requirements to guarantee its safety, in this study the effect of gamma radiation sterilization on these microparticles was evaluated. The size, morphology, and surface characteristics of the microparticles and the encapsulation efficiency of rhein were not affected by the sterilization process. Although DSC and PXRD analyses suggested otherwise, rhein release profiles were not altered by gamma radiation. The release of rhein from the microparticles was fitted to a Gompertz model.
