A deep comprehension of composition of pigments, employed nowadays in the field of pictorial retouch is considered essential for a deeper knowledge of their behavior with time once applied on artifacts. A commercially available set consisting of 27 pigments employed for the conservation of both historical and contemporary artworks has been characterized through Reflectance Spectroscopy in the VIS and NIR spectral range. The pigments included in the investigated set are classified into four categories (i) dyes and colors from plants, (ii) modern pigments, (iii) pigments of own production and historical pigments, and (iv) natural earths. Recorded spectra were interpreted with the aim to detect existing coloring and filling phases and obtained results were compared with available data sheets some inconsistencies were found, as well as lack of some compounds among the reported ones. Attributions were found for many features, even if in some cases detailed information for a comparison was not found in the literature, especially regarding NIR spectra. The proposed paper aims to provide a useful tool for the study of real artworks with a detailed overview of material characteristics in the visible and near infrared spectral range.

Patients with traumatic brain injury are referred to the neurosurgical unit at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, either from local accident and emergency departments (direct transfer from the scene) or from other hospitals (indirect transfer). This study looked at the outcome in both groups.

This was a retrospective observational study using trauma audit research network data for patients treated for traumatic brain injury at the neurosurgery department at the neurosurgical unit at James Cook University Hospital.

A total of 356 patients with traumatic brain injury were admitted under the care of neurosurgeons; 143 (40%) of these patients had a neurosurgical procedure. Of the patients undergoing a neurological procedure, 111 patients were transferred directly while 32 were indirect transfers; 213 patients were managed conservatively. Of those managed conservatively, 165 were transferred directly while 48 were indirect transfers. We compared the length of hospital stay and Glasgow Outcome Scale score for the patients based on whether they were conservatively managed or required surgery in the direct and indirect transfer groups. The difference in the length of stay in the surgical and conservative groups following direct and indirect transfer was insignificant (

= 0.07). The time to the operation in direct and indirect transfer was also not statistically significant (

= 0.06).

The angiogenic response to ischemia restores perfusion so as to preserve tissue. A role for mesenchymal-to-endothelial transition in the angiogenic response is controversial. This study is to determine if resident fibroblasts contribute to angiogenesis.

We utilized the murine model of hindlimb ischemia, and in vivo Matrigel plug assay together with lineage tracing studies and single cell RNA-sequencing to examine the transcriptional and functional changes in fibroblasts in response to ischemia.

Lineage tracing using Fsp1-Cre R26R-EYFP mice revealed the emergence within the ischemic hindlimb of a small subset of YFP

fibroblasts (E* cells) that expressed endothelial cell (EC) genes. Subcutaneous administration of Matrigel in Fsp1-Cre R26R-EYFP mice generated a plug that became vascularized within 5 days. Isolation of YFP

Together, these studies indicate the presence of subsets of tissue fibroblasts which seem poised to contribute to the angiogenic response. The expansion of these subsets with ischemia is dependent on activation of innate immune signaling and contributes to recovery of perfusion and preservation of ischemic tissue.

Microscopically they resemble lipomas. They are usually found on the limbs or trunk. Fewer than 40 cases of hypopharyngeal liposarcoma have been reported in the literature. Surgical excision with a cervical or endoscopic approach has been the first-line treatment for these cases. We present a patient with the first documented primary excision via carbon dioxide laser using an entirely transoral approach. This case suggests a new standard of management but also highlights the difficulties with investigation and diagnosis in a rare presentation.1. AICAR This study examined the expression of genes related to appetite-regulating neuropeptides in the hypothalamus of broiler and layer chicks (Gallus gallus) after intraperitoneal (IP) injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). 2. Both broiler and layer chicks received (n = 10 per group) LPS at doses of 0 and 200 µg and feed intake was measured up to 6 h after injection. In a further experiment, (n = 8 per group) mRNA abundance of some hypothalamic neuropeptides was measured 2 h after injection. The rectal temperature of each chick was measured before and 2 h post-injection. 3. Feed intake was significantly decreased by LPS from 2 h after injection and thereafter, while the rectal temperature did not change. 4. LPS decreased the expression of appetite-enhancing neuropeptides neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) in broilers and, NPY in layer chicks. The expression of appetite-suppressing neuropeptides (corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and, cocaine and amphetamine regulated-transcript (CART) was not changed in broilers, while CRF tended to decrease and POMC was significantly decreased in layers.
