Hanchuan Zupa Granule (HCZP), a traditional Chinese ethnodrug, has the functions of supressing a cough, resolving phlegm, warming the lungs, and relieving asthma. In clinical practice employing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), HCZP is commonly used to treat acute colds, cough and abnormal mucous asthma caused by a cold, or "Nai-Zi-Lai" in the Uygur language. Studies have confirmed the use of HCZP to treat cough variant asthma (CVA) and other respiratory diseases. However, the pharmacological mechanisms of HCZP remain unrevealed.

A guinea pig CVA animal model was established by intraperitoneal injection of ovalbumin (OVA) combined with intraperitoneal injection of aluminium hydroxide adjuvant and atomized OVA. The stems of Entada phaseoloides (L.) Merr commonly named "Guo-gang-long", is a traditional Chinese folk medicine that has been used clinically in China for the treatment of arthritis. Our previous study described that triterpene saponins isolated from "Guo-gang-long" could inhibit the inflammatory response. However, the potential mechanism of "Guo-gang-long" on treatment of arthritis, and whether the triterpene saponins responsible for its anti-arthritic effect are unclear.

To investigate the function and mechanisms of the triterpene saponins from E. phaseoloides (ES) in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rats.

The chemical components of ES were analyzed by HPLC. Anti-arthritic activity of ES was investigated in CIA rats, which was established by immunization with bovine type II collagen. Si-Wu-Tang (SWT), a prestigious herbal formula from China, has been extensively used for centuries for female-related diseases. It has been documented that SWT has a significant inhibitory effect on non-triple-negative breast cancer (non-TNBC) cells. However, there has been limited comprehensive analysis of the targeted effects of the anticancer components of SWT and its exact biological mechanism.

This study aims to uncover the mechanism by which SWT treats non-TNBC by applying a network pharmacological method combined with experimental validation.

First, SWT compounds were collected from the Traditional Chinese Medicines Systems Pharmacology database (TCMSP) and The Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ETCM), and then the targets related to SWT were obtained from the TCMSP and SwissTarget databases. Second, a target data set of non-TNBC proteins was established by using the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), GeneCards and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. Third, based on the oession of ESR1, PPARG and PTGS2 were upregulated (P<0.01), and the mRNA and protein levels of CAT were downregulated (P<0.01), suggesting a multi-gene regulatory molecular mechanism of SWT against non-triple-negative breast cancer.

The increasing national prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications have overstretched the health care system in Tanzania and influenced patients to use herbal medicines as alternative therapeutic strategies. Therefore, an urgent need exists to validate the safety and efficacy of plants used locally.

To identify plants used for the management of DM in Tanzania and analyses their pharmacological, phytochemistry, and safety evidence with a special focus on the mechanism of action.

Researchers searched Medline, web of science, and Scopus for published articles. Also, specialized herbarium documents of Muhimbili Institute of traditional medicine were reviewed. Articles were assessed for relevance, quality, and taxonomical accuracy before being critically reviewed.

We identified 62 plant species used locally for DM management. Moringa oleifera Lam. and Cymbopogon citratus (D.C) stapf were the most mentioned. Fifty-four phytochemicals from 13 species had DM activities. These were mainly; polyphenolics, phytosterols, and triterpenoids.
