We demonstrate signatures of oxidative phosphorylation deficiency for common mtDNA variants and nuclear-encoded complex I variants and a compensatory upregulation of unaffected oxidative phosphorylation components. This technique can now be universally applied to evaluate a wide range of skeletal muscle disorders and protein targets. This study investigated the acute effects of compression garments (CG) on balance control in elite athletes. 15 male professional handball players were recruited. They had to stand as motionless as possible in a monopedal stance on a force plate with the eyes closed and on a wobble board with the eyes open, while wearing CG or not. Centre of foot pressure mean velocity and surface area were calculated. Statistics were first calculated with the data from the whole sample. A hierarchical cluster analysis was also performed in order to categorize the participants' behaviours into subgroups with similar characteristics. The whole group analysis showed that there were no significant effects attributed to CG. The clustering analysis identified two distinct and homogeneous subgroups of participants. Only athletes with the best balance abilities at baseline could benefit from CG wearing to improve their balance control. These athletes, who swayed less and were more sensitive to somatosensory manipulation due to CG wearing, seem to control balance by adopting a support-dependent preferred sensorimotor tactic. Our findings suggest that amongst high-level athletes, the ability to benefit from CG wearing to improve balance control seems to depend on participants' intrinsic balance skills and/or preferred sensorimotor tactics.Nitro-fatty acids are electrophilic anti-inflammatory mediators which are generated during myocardial ischemic injury. Whether these species exert anti-arrhythmic effects in the acute phase of myocardial ischemia has not been investigated so far. Herein, we demonstrate that pretreatment of mice with 9- and 10-nitro-octadec-9-enoic acid (nitro-oleic acid, NO2-OA) significantly reduced the susceptibility to develop acute ventricular tachycardia (VT). Accordingly, epicardial mapping revealed a markedly enhanced homogeneity in ventricular conduction. NO2-OA treatment of isolated cardiomyocytes lowered the number of spontaneous contractions upon adrenergic isoproterenol stimulation and nearly abolished ryanodine receptor type 2 (RyR2)-dependent sarcoplasmic Ca2+ leak. NO2-OA also significantly reduced RyR2-phosphorylation by inhibition of increased CaMKII activity. Thus, NO2-OA might be a novel pharmacological option for the prevention of VT development. The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 has a Curie temperature TC of about 270 K, which is tunable through controlling the Fe deficiency content and can even reach above room temperature. To achieve insights into its ferromagnetic exchange that gives the high TC, the critical behavior has been investigated by measuring the magnetization in Fe5GeTe2 crystal around the ferromagnetic ordering temperature. The analysis of the measured magnetization by using various techniques harmonically reached to a set of reliable critical exponents with TC = 273.7 K, β = 0.3457 ± 0.001, γ = 1.40617 ± 0.003, and δ = 5.021 ± 0.001. By comparing these critical exponents with those predicted by various models, it seems that the magnetic properties of Fe5GeTe2 could be interpreted by a three-dimensional magnetic exchange with the exchange distance decaying as J(r) ≈ r-4.916, close to that of a three-dimensional Heisenberg model with long-range magnetic coupling.Human-bear conflicts triggered by nuisance behaviour in public places and damage to livestock, crops, beehives and trees are among the main threats to bear populations globally. The effectiveness of interventions used to minimize bear-caused damage is insufficiently known and comparative reviews are lacking. We conducted a meta-analysis of 77 cases from 48 publications and used the relative risk of damage to compare the effectiveness of non-invasive interventions, invasive management (translocations) and lethal control (shooting) against bears. We show that the most effective interventions are electric fences (95% confidence interval = 79.2-100% reduction in damage), calving control (100%) and livestock replacement (99.8%), but the latter two approaches were applied in only one case each and need more testing. Deterrents varied widely in their effectiveness (13.7-79.5%) and we recommend applying these during the peak periods of damage infliction. We found shooting (- 34.2 to 100%) to have a short-term positive effect with its effectiveness decreasing significantly and linearly over time. We did not find relationships between bear density and intervention effectiveness, possibly due to differences in spatial scales at which they were measured (large scales for densities and local fine scales for effectiveness). We appeal for more effectiveness studies and their scientific publishing in regard to under-represented conflict species and regions.Surface topography is a key parameter in regulating the morphology and behavior of single cells. At multicellular level, coordinated cell displacements drive many biological events such as embryonic morphogenesis. However, the effect of surface topography on collective migration of epithelium has not been studied in detail. Mastering the connection between surface features and collective cellular behaviour is highly important for novel approaches in tissue engineering and repair. Herein, we used photopatterned microtopographies on azobenzene-containing materials and showed that smooth topographical cues with proper period and orientation can efficiently orchestrate cell alignment in growing epithelium. Furthermore, the experimental system allowed us to investigate how the orientation of the topographical features can alter the speed of wound closure in vitro. see more Our findings indicate that the extracellular microenvironment topography coordinates their focal adhesion distribution and alignment. These topographic cues are able to guide the collective migration of multicellular systems, even when cell-cell junctions are disrupted.
