Since growing mouse oocytes undergo a burst of folate accumulation as they near full size, we have investigated whether oocytes transport serine. Substantial serine transport appeared in oocytes near the end of their growth. Serine transport continued when oocytes resumed meiosis but ceased partway through first meiotic metaphase, remaining quiescent in mature eggs in second meiotic metaphase. The serine transporter was sodium dependent and inhibited by alanine, cysteine, leucine, or histidine, and had a Michaelis-Menten constant (Km ) for serine of 200 µM. Unexpectedly, exposing cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes to the physiological mediator of meiotic arrest, natriuretic peptide precursor Type C, substantially stimulated serine transport by the enclosed oocyte. The bolus liquids were X-ray medium, glucose, and thickener solutions. For a low-viscosity bolus, the simulation showed reasonable agreement of bolus velocity with X-ray measurements. The influence of bolus density on swallowing velocity was investigated numerically. Although a higher density resulted in a higher bolus velocity, the increase in velocity was modest. When the bolus viscosity was high, it was necessary to apply the slip boundary condition to obtain agreement for bolus velocity between the simulation and X-ray measurements. The simulations also showed that the method of characteristic shear rate proposed by Zhu et al. (2014) is effective for predicting the bolus velocity for shear thinning fluids. In order to discuss the effect of saliva lubrication and the physical meaning of the characteristic shear rate, an immiscible two-layer flow of the core and wall layer was analyzed theoretically by analogy with mesopharyngeal bolus flow. The characteristic shear rate enabled us to correlate the macroscopic flow behavior and the viscosity of the core layer fluid. Lubrication due to the wall layer caused apparent slip and enhanced the transfer of viscous core fluid. For viscous fluid that presented a large apparent slip in the two-layer model, the slip boundary condition was needed in the swallowing simulation. Determining the P-acquisition strategies of tropical tree species could therefore yield insight into patterns of tree β-diversity across edaphic gradients. In particular, the synthesis of root phosphatases is likely to be of significance given that organic P represents a large pool of potentially available P in tropical forest soils. It has also been suggested that a high root phosphatase activity in putative nitrogen (N)-fixing legumes might explain their high abundance in lowland neotropical forests under low P supply. Here, we measured phosphomonoesterase (PME) activity on the first three root orders of co-occurring tropical tree species differing in their N fixation capacity, growing on soils of contrasting P availability in Panama. Our results show that root PME activity was higher on average in P-poor than in P-rich soils, but that local variation in PME activity among co-occurring species within a site was larger than that explained by differences in soil P across sites. Legumes expressed higher PME activity than non-legumes, but nodulated legumes (i.e., actively fixing nitrogen) did not differ from legumes without nodules, indicating that PME activity is unrelated to N fixation. Finally, PME activity declined with increasing root order, but the magnitude of the decline varied markedly among species, highlighting the importance of classifying fine roots into functional groups prior to measuring root traits. Our results support the hypothesis that low-P promotes a high root PME activity, although the high local variation in this trait among co-occurring species points toward a high functional diversity in P-acquisition strategies within an individual community. We adopted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), in silico tools and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis to evaluate this association. Totally, 10,614 cancer subjects and 33,294 controls were involved in the pooled analysis. When all the studies were pooled, no significant correlation was indicated between the two variants and cancer risk. However, in stratification analysis by ethnicity, we found that CRP rs1205 C>T polymorphism was associated with an elevated risk of cancer in Asians (T-allele vs. C-allele, OR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.06-1.36, pheterogeneity  = .226; TT vs. CC, OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.14-1.93, pheterogeneity  = .089). Similar findings were observed for rs2808630 variant. In silico tools showed that lung adenocarcinoma participants with high CRP expression may have shorter overall survival time than low expression group. ELISA analysis indicated that CRP expression in prostate adenocarcinoma subjects with TT + TC genotypes was statistically higher than in those with CC genotypes. Nfatc1loxP/loxP , Nfatc2loxP/loxP , and Nfatc1loxP/loxP ;Nfatc2loxP/loxP conditional mice were mated with BGLAP-Cre transgenics to inactivate Nfatc1 and Nfatc2 singly and in combination in osteoblasts. Microcomputed tomography demonstrated that male and female conditionally inactivated Nfatc1, Nfatc2 and dual Nfatc1;Nfatc2 mice had osteopenia at Lumbar 3 (L3) sites when compared to littermate controls. However, the Nfatc1 and Nfatc2 inactivation singly and in combination in Bglap-expressing osteoblasts did not result in an appreciable phenotype at femoral sites. Bone histomorphometry of L3 confirmed the osteopenic phenotype and demonstrated that Nfatc1;Nfatc2 inactivated male mice had a significant decrease in osteoblast number and in osteoblast surface and osteoid surface. METHODS This retrospective observational study examined all patients treated in adult ICUs from 1 January 2016 until 31 December 2016 included in the Finnish ICU Registry.Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to explain the effect on survival. RESULTS Decisions to limit life-sustaining treatment were made for 2444 patients (13.7%; 95% CI 13.2-14.2). ICU, hospital, and 12-month survival rates were 71% (95% CI 69-73), 49% (95% CI 47-51), and 24% (95% CI 22-26), respectively. Patients with life support withheld andincreased 12-month survival rates were associated with admission from the operating theatre(OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1-3.4), good prehospital physical fitness (OR 4.7, 95%Cl 1.2-16.8), and being housed at home (OR 2.0, 95%Cl 1.4-2.8).Decreased survival rates were associated with admissionfrom a hospital ward (OR 0.67, 95% Cl 0.5-0.9), higher comorbidity (OR 0.6, 95% Cl 0.4-0.9), cancer (OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.2-0.9), greater illness severity(SAPS II; OR 0.98, 95% Cl 0.98-0.99), and higher care intensity (TISS-76; OR 0.93, 95% Cl 0.92-0.95). Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) act as pacemakers for gastrointestinal motility regulation and are likely important in stress-associated gastrointestinal motility disorders. This study explored the mechanisms underlying gallbladder ICCs function under acute stress conditions using a rabbit chest puncture and cholecystectomy model. The stem cell factor (SCF)/c-kit pathway is essential for the development of ICCs, and gene expression was investigated to identify stress-induced transcriptional alterations. Immunohistochemistry, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assays were used to determine ICCs apoptosis, whereas western blot analysis and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction were used to detect changes in the SCF/c-kit signaling pathway. MATERIALS & METHODS We used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database linked to Registry of Catastrophic Illness database to identify patients with MG. The control groups were composed of those who did not have MG and were matched with the MG patients by sex, age and index date. We recorded thyroid disease histories before and after the index date. RESULTS Our study included 5,813 MG patients and 29,025 control groups. The prevalence of thyroid diseases in the MG patients at diagnosis was 18.4%, which was nearly 3.9-fold greater than that in the control groups. (Odds ratio [OR] 3.89, 95% Confidence interval [CI] 3.574-4.246) After excluding pre-existing thyroid diseases, the incidence of comorbid thyroid diseases was 8.7% in the MG patients and 4% in the control groups. The MG patients had a 2.36-fold increased risk of developing thyroid diseases compared to the control groups.
