We report the one-step synthesis of diversely substituted functional 1,2-dithiolanes by reacting readily accessible 1,3-bis-tert-butyl thioethers with bromine. The reaction proceeds to completion within minutes under mild conditions, presumably via a sulfonium-mediated ring closure. Using X-ray crystallography and UV-vis spectroscopy, we demonstrate how substituent size and ring substitution pattern can affect the geometry and photophysical properties of 1,2-dithiolanes.This study investigated the protective effects of maca ethanol extract (EEM) and N-(3-methozybenzyl)-(9Z,12Z,15Z)-octadecatrienamide (M 183) on corticosterone (CORT)-induced testicular toxicity. Male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups. Except for the control group, CORT (40 mg per kg·bw) was injected subcutaneously for 21 consecutive days to induce testicular toxicity. 1 h before CORT injection, the rats were treated with EEM (400 mg per kg·bw) and M 183 (5 mg per kg·bw, 25 mg per kg·bw) by gavage, except for the control group and model group. Epididymal sperm and biochemical, and histological parameters were evaluated for the protective effects of the drugs. EEM (400 mg per kg·bw) and M 183 (5 mg per kg·bw, 25 mg per kg·bw) increased the sperm concentration and sperm motility, decreased the production of abnormal sperms, and increased the number of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes in the seminiferous tubules of CORT-induced rats. Moreover, EEM and M 183 decreased the MDA levels and the positive expression rates of TUNEL, whereas they increased the activities of SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, and GST, and the contents of GSH in the testicles of CORT-induced rats. Furthermore, EEM and M 183 alleviated CORT-induced reduction in the positive expression rates of PCNA and Ki67 in the testicles of rats. Besides, EEM and M 183 reduced the expression levels of Keap-1 and increased the expression levels of Nrf2, HO-1, γ-GCS, and NQO1 in the testicles of CORT-induced rats. In summary, the protective effects of EEM and M 183 may be attributed to their anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic properties.A copper-catalysed intramolecular N-arylation of 5-aminopyrazoles is demonstrated for the first time. Highly substituted pyrazolo[3,4-b]indoles are synthesized. In particular, the indole core is decorated with halogens and alkyl and methoxy groups. Furthermore, a selective N-arylation of unsymmetrical diaryl bromide containing pyrazoles is exemplified, resulting in valuable pyrazolo[1,5-a]benzimidazoles.BiOCl has been identified to be a promising photocatalyst for the rapid photodegradation of organic pollutants, but its practical application was restricted by its limited photocatalytic activity. In this work, a highly reactive BiOCl decahedron photocatalyst with an exposed (001) facet was successfully hydrothermally synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method using bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)3·5H2O) and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) as raw materials. By adjusting the dosage of NH4Cl, the BiOCl nanoplates transformed from hexahedra with quadrilateral 110 oblique facets to decahedra with octagonal 110 and 100 oblique facets. As compared to the original BiOCl nanoplates, decahedral BiOCl possesses much more oxygen-enriched surfaces and a narrowed bandgap, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic performance. selleck chemicals The decahedral BiOCl photocatalyst achieves a high degradability of 98% for the photodegradation of RhB after 6 min of irradiation, which is much faster than that of a hexahedral BiOCl sample.Opening a way to designing tunable interactions between colloidal particles in rotating electric and magnetic fields provides rich opportunities both for fundamental studies of phase transitions and engineering of soft materials. Spatial hodographs, showing the distribution of the field magnitude and orientation, allow the adjustment of interactions and can be an extremely potent tool for prospective experiments, but remain unstudied systematically. Here, we calculate the tunable interactions between spherical particles in rhodonea, conical, cylindrical, and ellipsoidal field hodographs, as the most experimentally important cases. We discovered that spatial hodographs are reduced to each other, providing a plethora of interactions, e.g., repulsive, attractive, barrier-like, and double-scale repulsive ones. Complementing the "magic" conical angle, the "magic" compression and ellipticity of cylindrical and ellipsoidal hodographs are introduced. In the "magic" hodographs, the interactions become spatially isotropic and attain dispersion-force-like asymptotic (the same for pairwise and many-body energies), being attractive or repulsive, if the particle permittivity is larger or smaller than that of the solvent. With the diagrammatic method and numerical calculations, we obtained physically meaningful fits to the many-body tunable potentials for silica (iron oxide) particles in deionised water in the rotating electric (magnetic) fields. Our results provide essential guidance for future experiments and simulations of colloidal liquids, crystals, gels, and glasses, important for a broad range of problems in condensed matter, chemical physics, physical chemistry, materials science, and soft matter.Bone and energy metabolism are profoundly influenced by exercise. The objective of this study was to determine for the first time whether a short-term supplementation with ubiquinol could have a modulating effect on bone turnover and energy metabolism associated with strenuous exercise. The participants (n = 100 healthy and well-trained firemen) were randomly divided into two groups ubiquinol group (ubiquinol (200 mg day-1)) and control group (placebo) for two weeks. The protocol consisted of conducting two identical strenuous exercise tests with a rest period between tests of 24 h. Blood samples were collected before supplementation (basal value) (T1), after supplementation (T2), after the first physical exercise test (T3), after 24 h of rest (T4), and after the second physical exercise test (T5). Parathyroid hormone (PTH), osteocalcin (OC), osteoprotegerin (OPG), osteopontin (OPN), sclerotin (SOST), alkaline phosphatase (AP), adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), insulin, leptin, adrenaline, noradrenaline and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) were determined.
