Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to upgraded Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor





Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They improve the stats of the item that they are attached to. Armor upgrades are found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components within them by with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage a piece of armor or weapon will absorb is contingent on the level of its upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to its highest upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it should be heavier.

There are several different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Some upgrades give armor an extra number of health points, while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item can be given, as illustrated below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades require charges for use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades refresh daily or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest method of upgrading armor is with Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the environment and looting minor loot chests. The more bars needed to complete an upgrade, the more expensive the upgrade. If you have multiple upgrade materials, the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and sets has changed. Before you could search for an Upgrade Bench and pay a certain amount of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to an increased rarity. You could do this until you reached the max upgrade level of the equipment or weapon, following which the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear with low upgrade levels but with high base scores and stat distributions. These will then be able to give you the most prestigious bonuses and blessings.

To level up faster, most players will prioritise upgrading their weapons. In addition to these players, they should think about upgrading the weapons that are most popular with their squadmates to increase their power as well. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to enhance its effectiveness when accompanied by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to improve the stats of a character or to provide additional effects on weapons and armor. Jewelry crafting is the process of creating them. You combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the quality of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be gotten from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or by salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a gem can be improved by the Jeweler, in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Based on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

All levels of jewels can be made at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Jewels can be replaced by another one without damaging the original. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in a piece of equipment only once.

The use of more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is typically performed to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. In addition to enhancing performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, so repeated friction with pivots doesn't cause harm as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These glyphs give a slight boost in power and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded by the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with various small, but beneficial, benefits. They can be obtained in the areas of starting as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and by performing road interactions. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants a small but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire rings, amulets and necklaces, in a similar way as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that are active whenever the hero is not in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It can also compensate for the absence of excellent team or talent tree slots that are normally filled by the hero's best stats.

As a rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace in the near future. Then, you should consider any items with desirable stats that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade, as it's often better to upgrade a single important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players, on the other hand will pick a pink or green ward, based on the matchup. These choices can impact a hero's ability to control the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will also find other trinkets in the form of rewards and trophies throughout the game.
