Bed bugs are hematophagous insects that can be problematic in some urban emergency departments. Infested patients were more likely to be anemic (59.5% vs 36.9%) and to have severe anemia (4.4% vs 0.7%) (P<.001 for both). Despite near equal representation of women in medical schools since 2008, the percentage of women in surgical subspecialties has remained low. Hand surgery accounts for one of the highest percentages of women, at 19%. Ascension to leadership positions has not yet been fully studied among this group. The 2014 to 2018 membership rosters were obtained from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and compared by gender. Leadership and volunteer committee positions were evaluated as published in the annual ASSH Committee Reference Book. Leadership positions were defined as appointment to committee chair or Council or acceptance to the Young Leaders Program. Rates of engagement were compared for each of the leadership activities. When available, the time for advancement through various leadership positions was also analyzed by gender.

Beef briskets were subjected to shockwave (11 kJ/pulse) and were sous vide-cooked at 60 °C for 12 h. Shockwave processing alone decreased the enthalpy and thermal denaturation temperature of the connective tissue proteins (second peak in the DSC thermogram, p less then 0.05) compared to the control raw samples, while the protein gel electrophoresis profile remained unaffected. The results show that the flavonoids reversibly inhibited the α-amylase in a non-competitive manner with Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) and half-inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 10.51 and 0.0067 mg/mL, respectively. The flavonoids present a strong ability to quench the intrinsic fluorescence of α-amylase through static quenching by forming a complex. The values of the binding site (n) at different temperatures were found to be approximately the unity, indicating the presence of a single class of molecular binding of the dandelion flavonoids on α-amylase. The positive values of enthalpy and entropy change reveal that the binding was predominately driven by hydrophobic interactions. Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) nanocapsules loaded with linalool EO were prepared using an extrusion method with 1, 3, and 5% w/v (PBAT to chloroform). Nanocapsules' sizes ranged from 100 to 250 nm and were spherical. The release profile was studied using an ethanoic medium over 24 h, and according to the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, a Fick diffusion mechanism was involved. FT-IR and thermogravimetric analyses confirmed EO encapsulation with an encapsulation efficiency of 55%, 71%, and 74% for 1, 3, and 5%, respectively. The results indicated that encapsulation depended on organic phase concentration, with higher PBAT contents achieving better results. Herein, a stable two-dimensional (2D) Au-Ag core-shell nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) nanoarray substrate with high-performance SERS activity was developed based on interface self-assembly strategy and successfully applied to the detection of thiram in apple sample. A broad linearity range of 0.01-10 mg/L and a low limit of detection of 0.018 mg/L were achieved for thiram solution. The substrate was stable and exhibited satisfactory sensitivity after preserving at ambient temperature for 4 weeks. Furthermore, this method presented the comparable result to that acquired from high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with satisfactory recoveries of 93-116%. Overall, total carotenoid relative bioaccessibility (TCRB) of 100 mesh-sized powder (100 MP, 15.46%) was higher than that of 18 mesh-sized powder (18 MP, 12.94%). With the addition of 2% corn oil, TCRB increased 108.35% (18 MP) and 88.55% (100 MP), respectively. Lutein (≥27160 µg/100 g) and β-carotene (≥5192 µg/100 g) were main carotenoid monomers in SUPF and significantly correlated with DPPH radical scavenging activity of digestive supernatant (p less then 0.05). Notably, DPPH radical scavenging activity of 18 MP increased 96.54% with corn oil. White Leghorn (WLH) and Rhode Island Red (RIR) hens were fed a corn-soybean-based diet enriched with flaxseed and carotenoids; eggs were collected, cooked, and subjected to simulated GI digestion. The results showed that egg proteins were equally digestible with no change in the degree of hydrolysis (DH). The linolenic fatty acid in enriched-cooked samples remained bio-accessible after GI digestion. The lutein bio-accessibility in enriched eggs decreased after GI digestion except in RIR fried sample. Eggs from WLH and RIR achieved similar peptide content after GI digestion. These results elucidate the bio-accessibility of different bioactive compounds in cooked eggs and the use of eggs as potential functional foods.
