Most modern door handles have cover plates that hide the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. If your new handle does not have them already connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

Removal of the Old Handle

Door handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home but they're also crucial for safety as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. But, over time, your door handle may lose its grip, appear loose, or look old and worn out. This is a sign that it's time to replace the door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is a serious problem because you won't be in a position to lock or unlock the door and put you and your family at risk.

Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle is dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who struggle to open it. They could become trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will fit, try taking out the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will allow you to purchase the correct size door handle.

It is easiest to remove the door handle by removing it from the door. Usually it is a matter of using a screwdriver. However, some door handles have the cover plate which hides the mounting screws, so you'll need to pry off this cover plate to get access to the screws beneath. Once you've removed your old handle, take note of the way the spindle is attached to ensure that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.

Alternately, you can take off the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. You can make use of a screwdriver to take off the door handle. However, you'll have to locate the tiny latch, which is located on the edge trim piece. After you have removed the latch, unscrew the handle from the strike plate and then remove the latch off the door's edge.

Remove the Strike Plate

When you replace your handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which is the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The package the new handles are packaged in will include two latch plates: a rectangular one and a circular one (see the above diagram that outlines the components of a door handle). If your current latch plate has rectangular in shape, swap it over to the round one, so that the latch hooks into the strike plate in a way that makes the handle easier to operate.

The first step is to remove the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. These screws can be quite tight and will require some force to loosen. If possible, it may be beneficial to have another person assist with this part.

The latch plate should be removed from the door after the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move using a nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that were included with the new handles. Be window handles not to tighten too much the screws, as this may cause damage to the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to see whether it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate up or down, forward or back until the door closes correctly.

If the door is jiggling or moving, you may need to enlarge the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too small, a wrong size latch, or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Take off the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into a hole in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch could be all that's needed to fix it.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to see however, you can insert a screwdriver into an insignificant hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After you've removed the trim plate, it should be simple to remove the latch and the bolts that keep the latch and spindle in place.

If the latch doesn't easily release, try using the clip of a paper or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently turn or jiggle it until you feel the latch and handle start to split. It is possible to repeat this procedure several times before you can remove the latch.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without issues after you've removed the old one. Make sure the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers, and then use the new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.

Measure the existing backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Also, make sure that the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with this measurement.

You'll require a brand new lock cylinder if you're replacing the handle and latch or if your current one is damaged. If you're not switching locks the new lock will fit inside the recess you have already installed, and work with your current keys. Choose a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match your existing handles.
