To determine the serum hypoxia inducible factor-1, -2 and -3 (HIF-1, -2 and -3) levels in patients with laryngeal neoplasm, and to investigate their role in differential diagnosis, prediction of tumor characteristic and extension, and prognosis and survival.

Patients with benign, premalignant and malignant laryngeal neoplasms were included. Sixty-four patients with a laryngeal neoplasm were enrolled.

Serum HIF-1, -2, and -3 levels were measured from blood samples, that were drawn before treatment, using ELISA.

A statistically significant difference between benign (HIF-1, -2, -3 4046,1 pg/mL; 2581,5 pg/mL; 1321,0 pg/mL), premalignant (HIF-1, -2, -3 3630,3 pg/mL; 3229,7 pg/mL; 2549,8 pg/mL) and malignant (HIF-1, -2, -3 3576,7 pg/mL; 2595,8 pg/mL; 1106,3 pg/mL) laryngeal neoplasms was not detected when serum HIF-1, -2 and -3 levels were compared. However, high serum HIF-2 level adversely affected survival, and locoregional control and had more than 7-fold increase in hazard ratio. Moreover, serum HIF-2 was an independent prognostic factor for 2-year overall-, disease free-, distant metastasis free survival and locoregional control.

Pollinator sex is associated with large differences in behavior that may lead to predictable differences in flower foraging, but this expectation has not been explicitly tested. We investigate sex-associated differences in nectar-foraging behavior of the hawkmoth Hyles lineata, using pollen on the proboscis as a proxy for flower visitation. We tested two predictions emerging from the literature (1) the sexes differ in the flower species they visit, (2) females are more specialized in flower choice. We also examined potential drivers underlying these predictions by performing field and laboratory experiments to test whether males (3) switch among flower species more frequently, or (4) fly farther and therefore encounter more species than females. Consistent with prediction (1), pollen load composition differed between the sexes, indicative of visitation differences. Contrary to prediction (2), females consistently carried more species-rich pollen loads than males. (3) Both sexes switched between flower species at similar rates, suggesting that differences in floral fidelity are unlikely to explain why females are less specialized than males. However, the therapeutic performance of peptides is usually hindered by their short half-lives in blood and inferior activity. Herein, supramolecular nanodrugs of therapeutic peptides are constructed by covalent assembly of chemotherapeutic peptides through genipin cross-linking. The resulting nanodrugs have intense absorbance in the near-infrared region and high photothermal conversion efficiencies, leading to the possibility of photothermal therapy. The combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy using the nanodrugs shows synergistic therapeutic effects on cancer cells. Hence, covalent assembly not only maintains the chemotherapeutic activities of the peptides but also triggers supramolecular photothermal effects, demonstrating that the covalent assembly of therapeutic peptides through genipin cross-linking is an efficient approach in constructing supramolecular nanodrugs toward synergistic anticancer therapy.

Differentiating between malignant and benign salivary gland tumors with fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) can be challenging. This study was aimed at testing the validity of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) and at assessing possible differences in the sensitivity and specificity of parotid gland FNAC between dedicated head and neck (H&N) centers, subdivided into head and neck oncology centers (HNOCs) and head and neck oncology affiliated centers (HNOACs), and general hospitals (GHs).

The Dutch Pathology Registry (PALGA) database was searched for patients who had undergone a salivary gland resection between January 1, 2006, and January 1, 2017, and had a preoperative FNAC result. The FNAC reports were retrospectively assigned to MSRSGC categories. The risk of malignancy (ROM) was calculated for each category. The sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing malignancy were calculated and compared among HNOCs, HNOACs, and GHs.

In all, 12,898 FNAC aspirates were evaluated. The ROMs for each category were as follows 12.5% in MSRSGC I, 10.3% in MSRSGC II, 29% in MSRSGC III, 2.3% in MSRSGC IVa, 28.6% in MSRSGC IVb, 83% in MSRSGC V, and 99.3% in MSRSGC VI. The sensitivity of FNAC was highest in HNOCs (88.1%), HNOACs scored lower (79.7%), and GHs had a sensitivity of 75.0%.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used for diagnosis and as a research tool, but its accuracy is questionable. The goal of this study was to compare the accuracy of knee MRI with clinical assessment for diagnosing meniscal tears, and to determine the accuracy of MRI for grading chondral lesions, relative to arthroscopy.

Physically active patients presenting with mechanical symptoms warranting a knee arthroscopy and satisfying the inclusion criteria, had both a knee arthroscopy and MRI performed. Arthroscopic findings were compared with those of MRI, using the International Chondral Research Society grading for chondral damage, and the presence or absence of a meniscal tear.

A total of 719 patients were recruited over a period of 6.5 years, average age 52 years (standard deviation, SD 5.2), malefemale=493226. Kappa scores with standard errors (SE) for agreement between MRI and knee arthroscopy were 0.41 (SE 0.1) for medial meniscal tears, and 0.44 (SE 0.1) for lateral meniscal tears. For the grade of chondral damage, the Kappa scores with SE values were 0.09 (0.1), 0.17 (0.1), and 0.22 (0.07) for anterior, medial and lateral compartments, respectively. Using areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves, we found clinical assessment was more accurate than MRI for diagnosis of lateral meniscal tears (P < 0.001), and of similar accuracy for the diagnosis of medial meniscal tears (P=0.12).

The COVID-19 pandemic demanded a rapid response within Radiation Oncology services to minimise the risk of infection to patients and workforce. This study aimed to assess whether the operational changes put in place to reduce infection risks were effective in engaging and supporting staff.

Our service's response saw staff and patients split into morning or afternoon shifts without overlap. Changes included extended clinic hours, modified treatment regimens, expanded online/electronic communication and remote working. Staff were invited to respond to an electronic questionnaire in September 2020, just after the peak of the second COVID-19 wave in Victoria. Responses captured demographic data, parental status, profession, happiness levels, fear of COVID-19 and e-communication efficacy.

A 57% response rate was achieved. 69% of respondents were female; 40% were aged 45+ and 35% had school-aged children. Staff aged 45+ showed a significantly greater fear of COVID-19 than younger staff. 36% of respondents repher surges, or another pandemic, arise.

This qualitative study recruited radiation oncologists, nurses, dietitians and speech pathologists from four different head and neck cancer teams in Australia and the United States. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analysed using a grounded-theory approach.
