e benefits of BMPs on improving surface water quality to better manage living resources in agricultural landscapes inside and outside the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) ecohydrological model was utilized to simulate fecal contamination in the 1937 km2 Selangor River Watershed in Malaysia. The watershed conditions posed considerable challenges owing to data scarcity and tropical climate conditions, which are very different from the original conditions that SWAT was developed and tested for. Insufficient data were compensated by publicly available data (e.g., land cover, soil, and weather) to run SWAT. In addition, field monitoring and interviews clarified representative situations of pollution sources and loads, which were used as input for the model. Model parameters determined by empirical analyses in the USA (e.g., surface runoff, evapotranspiration, and temperature adjustment for bacteria die-off) are thoroughly discussed. In particular, due consideration was given to tropical climate characteristics such as intense rainfall, high potential evapotranspiration, and high temperatures throughout the year. Knowledge about the disease in the urban context is surprisingly rare, especially in Africa. Here, we provide the first study of leptospires in waters within an African city. A simple centrifugation-based method was developed to screen waterborne leptospires from remote or poorly areas. Major ions, trace elements, stable isotopes and pathogenic Leptospira were then seasonally investigated in 193 water samples from three neighborhoods of Cotonou (Benin) with different socio-environmental and hydrographic characteristics. Firstly, no leptospire was detected in tap waters. Secondly, although surface contamination cannot be excluded, one groundwater well was found leptospire positive. Thirdly, pathogenic Leptospira mainly contaminated surface waters of temporary and permanent ponds (9.5% and 27.3% of total prevalence, respectively). Isotopic signatures suggest that leptospires occurred in pond waters formed at the beginning of the rainy season following low to moderate rainfall events. Nevertheless, Leptospira-containing waters possess physico-chemical characteristics that are similar to the spectrum of waters sampled throughout the three sites, thus suggesting that Cotonou waters are widely compatible with Leptospira survival. The frequent contact with water exposes Cotonou inhabitants to the risk of leptospirosis which deserves more attention from public health authorities. In recent years, high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) combined with separation techniques has allowed comprehensive analysis of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) as well as their metabolites and transformation products in various environmental samples via retrospective screening. However, to date, only a few suspect or non-targeted studies on the occurrence of CECs in marine aquatic system are reported. In this study, two methods, based on direct injection for seawater, or ultrasound-assisted extraction for sediments, followed by LC-Q-TOF-MS analysis were developed and applied for the simultaneous targeted and screening of contaminants in coastal samples (seawater, particulates and sediment) from Qatar collected in 2017-2018. link= Selleckchem GSK-3 inhibitor Among the twenty-one target analytes (pesticides, PPCPs and a plasticizer), two compounds only were detected in seawater. Caffeine was detected in seawater samples at all sampling sites, and cotinine was detected in seawater samples collected in Umm Bab in 2018 and seawaters receiving stormwater. Traces of trimethoprim and carbamazepine were detected in sediment samples collected at four sites in 2017. These results suggest some inputs of domestic wastewater in the coastal waters in Qatar. In total, twelve molecular features were tentatively identified from suspect screening at concentration levels significantly higher than that in procedure blanks. The presence of four plasticizers and one pesticide were further confirmed using reference standards diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and tributyl phosphate (TBP) in seawater samples; bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in sediment and particulate samples; and dinoterb in seawater after storm event and particulate samples. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of high resolution LC-Q-TOF-MS/MS for combined targeted and non-targeted analyses of trace contaminants in marine systems over a broad range of log P values. The autotrophic nitrogen removal process has great potential to be applied to the biological removal of nitrogen from wastewater, but its application is hindered by its unstable operation under adverse environmental conditions, such as those presented by low temperatures, high organic matter concentrations, or the presence of toxic substances. Granules and microbial entrapment technology can effectively retain and enrich microbial assemblages in reactors to improve operating efficiency and reactor stability. Selleckchem GSK-3 inhibitor The carriers can also protect the reactor's internal microorganisms from interference from the external environment. This article critically reviews the existing literature on autotrophic nitrogen removal systems using immobilization technology. We focus our discussion on the natural aggregation process (granulation) and entrapment technology. link2 The selection of carrier materials and entrapment methods are identified and described in detail and the mechanisms through which entrapment technology protects microorganisms are analyzed. This review will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms through which immobilization operates and the prospects for immobilization technology to be applied in autotrophic nitrogen removal systems.Bio-cathode Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a promising and eco-friendly technology for concurrent hydrogen production and heavy metal reduction. link2 However, the bioreduction of Antimony (Sb) in a bio-electrochemical system with H2 production is not explored. In this study, two efficient sulfate-reducing bacterial (SRB) strains were used to investigate the enhanced bioreduction of sulfate and Sb with H2 production in the MEC. SRB Bio-cathode MEC was developed from the microbial fuel cell (MFC) and operated with an applied voltage of 0.8 V. The performance of the SRB bio-cathode was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. SRB strains of BY7 and SR10 supported the synergy reduction of sulfate and Sb by sulfide metal precipitation reaction. Hydrogen gas was the main product of SRB bio-cathode, with 86.9%, and 83.6% of H2 is produced by SR10 and BY7, respectively. Sb removal efficiency reached up to 88.2% in BY7 and 96.3% in SR10 with a sulfate reduction rate of 92.3 ± 2.6 and 98.4 ± 1.6 gm-3d-1 in BY7 and SR10, respectively. The conversion efficiency of Sb (V) to Sb (III) reached up to 70.1% in BY7 and 89.2% in SR10. It was concluded that the total removal efficiency of Sb relies on the amount of sulfide concentration produced by the sulfate reduction reaction. The hydrogen production rate was increased up to 1.25 ± 0.06 (BY7) and 1.36 ± 0.02 m3 H2/(m3·d) (SR10) before addition of Sb and produced up to 0.893 ± 0.03 and 0.981 ± 0.02 m3H2/(m3·d) after addition of Sb. The precipitates were characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which confirmed Sb (V) was reduced to Sb2S3.Carbon (C) cycling and phytoplankton community succession are very important for hydropower reservoir ecosystems; however, whether the former controls the latter or the reverse is still debated. To understand this process, we investigated phytoplankton species compositions, stable C isotope compositions of dissolved inorganic C and particulate organic C (δ13C-DIC and δ13C-POC), and related environmental factors in seven hydropower reservoirs on the Wujiang River, Southwest China. A total of 36 algal genera from seven phyla were identified, and phytoplankton community exhibited obvious temporal and spatial difference. The δ13C-DIC (from -9.96 to -3.73‰) and δ13C-POC (from -33.44 to -21.17‰) co-varied with the algal species succession and increased markedly during the shift of dominant species from Bacillariophyta to Pyrrophyta or Cyanophyta. In addition, the strong C fixation in the euphotic layer resulted in great δ13C-DIC and CO2 stratification in the reservoir profile. Statistical analyses and C isotope evidence demonstrate that an increase in water temperature triggers phytoplankton community succession, and that CO2 availability is a key to drive the succession direction, and in turn, C cycling is enhanced when phytoplankton are dominated by Pyrrophyta or Cyanophyta in hydropower reservoirs. This study confirms that C cycling and phytoplankton community succession interact with each other and evolve synchronously, and will be helpful to systematically evaluate the environmental consequences of river damming.Co-disposal of bottom ash (BA) with municipal solid waste (MSW) in landfills is commonly used for BA management. However, BA co-disposal may cause clogging of geotextiles in MSW landfills. This study investigated the effect of different BA co-disposal ratios on geotextile clogging, including MSW, low ash co-disposed (BA_L), high ash co-disposed (BA_H) landfills, and BA mono-fill. Results showed that the BA_L group increased the geotextile clogging by 0.1-0.6 times, compared to that in the MSW landfill. link3 link3 In contrast, the geotextile clogging of the BA_H and BA groups was reduced than that in the MSW landfill. The clogging was in a dynamic process during the experimental period in all the conditions, including chemical clogging and bio-clogging. Moreover, bio-clogging was the main contributor to the geotextile clogging, accounting for 64-83% of the total clogging mass. The BA co-disposal affected the leachate characteristics, such as pH, calcium concentration, and alkalinity, resulting in chemical clogging. When pH was above 7.0, calcium concentration and alkalinity were limiting factors for the calcium carbonate formation. In terms of the bio-clogging, the microbial analysis indicated that different BA co-disposal ratios influenced the diversity and structure of microbial community. These findings could help clarify the effect of BA co-disposal on geotextile clogging, thus useful to landfill operation in practice. In urban environments, particularly areas under reconstruction, metals, organic pollutants (OP), and microplastics (MP), are released in large amounts due to heavy traffic. Road runoff, a major transport route for urban pollutants, contributes significantly to a deteriorated water quality in receiving waters. This study was conducted in Gothenburg, Sweden, and is unique because it simultaneously investigates the occurrence of OP, metals, and MP on roads and in stormwater from an urban area under reconstruction. Correlations between the various pollutants were also explored. The study was carried out by collecting washwater and sweepsand generated from street sweeping, road surface sampling, and flow-proportional stormwater sampling on several occasions. The liquid and solid samples were analyzed for metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), oxy-PAH, aliphatics, aromatics, phthalates, and MP. The occurrence of OP was also analyzed with a non-target screening method of selected samples. Microplastics, i.e.
