Several papers have investigated the effect of stroke on creativity. While initial evidence favored right hemispheric dominance in artwork creation, subsequent well-founded research has established the left hemispheric participation in creativity, supporting the idea of bi-hemispheric role in artistic production. We here describe the case of a renowned artist who suffered a left hemispheric ischemic stroke involving the occipito-temporal region and subsequently manifested several difficulties in producing visual artworks. We documented his recovery phases in a prospective way during the initial months following stroke and observed that, although his constructional abilities recovered to a significant extent over 3 months, spontaneous creation was persistently impaired. The right hemispheric role in visual art is linked mainly to visuo-spatial skills and global attention, while left hemispheric participation is thought to be related to focal attention and visual imagery. Our case study lends support to the idea that art is a bi-hemispheric function with important complementary contributions from both the right and left hemisphere.Establishing the real-time position of a moving object poses a challenge to the visual system due to neural processing delays. While sensory information is travelling through the visual hierarchy, the object continues moving and information about its position becomes outdated. By extrapolating the position of a moving object along its trajectory, predictive mechanisms might effectively decrease the processing time associated with these objects. Here, we use time-resolved decoding of electroencephalographic (EEG) data from an apparent motion paradigm to demonstrate the interaction of two separate predictive mechanisms. First, we reveal predictive latency advantages for position representations as soon as the second object in an apparent motion sequence - even before the stimulus contains any physical motion energy. This is consistent with the existence of omni-directional, within-layer waves of sub-threshold activity that bring neurons coding for adjacent positions closer to their firing threshold, thereby redating the latencies of neural position representations at different levels of visual processing.Craniopharyngiomas (CP's) are hypothalamic tumors often associated with psychological disorders. Little attention is given to food products despite their increasing adulteration trend. To address this knowledge gap targeted, suspected-target, and non-targeted strategies were utilised to analyse ED drugs and their analogues in powdered drink mix (PDM), honey, jelly, hard candy, and sugar-coated chewing gum using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). The method was optimised and validated using 23 target analytes, representing different ED drugs with structural similarities. The modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction exhibited insignificant matrix effect (ME) within - 9.2-8.8% and provided complete coverage of target analytes with acceptable extraction recovery (RE) within 75.5-123.9%, except for carbodenafil in the PDM matrix. Based on the ME and RE performance, the analytical method was validated to analyse 25 food samples that claimed to enhance male sexual performance. The method exhibited good specificity and linearity with a limit of detection within 10-70 ng/mL and limit of quantification of 80 ng/mL. Similarly, the accuracy and precision were satisfactory within 77.4-122.0% and less then 16.7%RSD, respectively. The LC-HRMS targeted analysis, together with suspected-target and non-targeted screenings, identified and detected ten ED drugs from 24 food samples. The modified QuEChERS extraction with LC-HRMS-based method was demonstrated to be universally applicable to various food products, covering an extensive range of known and potentially novel ED drugs, which is valuable for routine casework.

A fundamental aspect of oncosurgical planning in organ resections is the identification of feeder vessel details to preserve healthy organ tissue while fully resecting the tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether three-dimensional (3D) cancer case models of computed tomography (CT) images will assist resident-level trainees in making appropriate operative plans for organ resection surgery.

This study was based on the perception of surgery residents who were presented with 5 different oncosurgical scenarios. A five-station carousel including cases of liver mass, stomach mass, annular pancreas, pelvic mass and mediastinal mass was formed for the study. The residents were required to compare their perception level of the cases with their CT images, and 3D models in terms of identifying the invasion of the mass, making differential diagnosis and preoperative planning stage.

All residents have given higher scores for models. 3D models provided better understanding of oncopathological anatomning. It can be used to improve the understanding of pathoanatomical changes of multidisciplinary oncologic cases. Namely, it is used in guiding the surgical strategy and determining whether patient-specific 3D models change pre-operative planning decisions made by surgeons in complex cancer mass surgical procedures.

This longitudinal study investigated the extent to which three media influence components, Awareness, Pressure, and Internalization of media ideals, predict body image and eating problems in children and whether gender moderates this effect. A total sample of N = 688 participants (46 % girls, aged 8-11 at T1) was studied. Self-report questionnaires were administered on the media influence components, body image and eating problems at T1 and T2 (1 year later). After controlling for age, adjusted body mass index and baseline levels of body image and eating problems, results show that media influence components significantly predicted Restraint and Concerns about Eating, Weight, and Shape one year later. Awareness, however, uniquely predicted increases in Eating Concerns in boys, while Pressure predicted increases in Concerns on Eating, Weight, and Shape in girls only. The current results indicate that media influences, some of which may be gender-specific risk factors, predict subsequent body image concerns of girls and boys during middle childhood. Thus, both boys and girls should be addressed in future research and prevention programs.Pharmacological inhibition of cyclin-dependent kinases has emerged as a possible treatment option for various cancer types. We recently identified substituted imidazo[1,2-c]pyrimidin-5(6H)-ones as inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2). Here, we report the synthesis of derivatives modified at positions 2, 3, 6 or 8 prepared using Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, halogenation, Dimroth-type rearrangement and alkylation as the main synthetic methods. The compounds displayed micro- to submicromolar inhibition of CDK2/cyclin E activity. Binding of the most potent compound 3b to CDK2 was determined using isothermal titration calorimetry. The co-crystal structure of 3b in complex with fully active CDK2 was solved, revealing the binding mode of 3b in the ATP pocket and a hydrogen bonding interaction with hinge region residue Leu83. Evaluation against leukaemia cell lines revealed low cytotoxicity, which is in line with the high selectivity towards CDK2. This study demonstrates that substituted imidazo[1,2-c]pyrimidines can be exploited for future kinase inhibitor development.The number of cancer cases continues to increase worldwide, and unfortunately the main systemic treatments available have numerous of side effects. Ruthenium complexes have shown to be promising chemotherapeutic agents, since they present low toxicity and are more selective for tumor tissues. We report the synthesis, characterization and biological properties of two new ruthenium (II) complexes containing Lapachol and Lawsone as ligands (1) [Ru(Law)(dppb)(phen)]PF6 and (2) [Ru(Lap)(dppb)(phen)]PF6, where Law = Lawsone, Lap = Lapachol, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphine)butane and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline. The ability of the complexes (1) and (2) to interact with CT-DNA (Calf Thymus) was investigated, and the results indicate that the complexes have shown a weak interaction with this macromolecule. Complexes (1) and (2) showed a moderate interaction with BSA, via a spontaneous process with the involvement of van der Waals and hydrogen bond interactions. Both complexes were tested against human lung cancer cellod circulation and heartbeat rate, which were less pronounced than with complex (2). In contrast to complex 2, which caused lethality even before 48h, complex (1) did not cause the death of the embryos at concentrations up to (2.0 mg L-1). Such constructs, obtained through different phosphorus chemistries, are characterized by the association of two different anti-HIV nucleoside analogues linked to the phosphorus atom respectively by the sugar residue and the exocyclic amino function of the nucleobase. In vitro, comparative anti-HIV evaluation demonstrates that such original prodrugs are able to allow the efficient intracellular combination release of a 5'-mononucleotide as well as another nucleoside analogue. In human T4-lymphoblastoid cells, the pronucleotide 1 shows remarkable antiviral activity with an EC50 in the nanomolar range (0.6 ηM) and without additional cytotoxicity. In addition, these two pronucleotide models exhibit higher selectivity index than the equimolar mixture of their constitutive nucleoside analogues opening the way to further studies with regard to the current use of drug combinations.
