INTRODUCTION Health and safety warnings are a regular part of the consumer protection landscape. However, the only sugar-sweetened beverage policy passed to date was found unconstitutional under the First Amendment. This paper evaluates sugar-sweetened beverage warning policies in light of existing health and safety warnings on consumer products and the First Amendment. METHODS In 2019, using LexisNexis, existing federal, state, and local health and safety warning laws for consumer products were identified. Then, bills proposed and laws passed through July 2019 that required sugar-sweetened beverage warnings were examined. Finally, First Amendment case law related to warning and disclosure requirements was analyzed to identify outstanding questions about the constitutionality of sugar-sweetened beverage warning policies. RESULTS Warnings on consumer products provide key examples of long-established health and safety warning language, rationales for passage, and formatting requirements. Between 2011 and 2019, a total of 9 jurisdictions proposed 28 bills (including 1 law by San Francisco) requiring sugar-sweetened beverage warnings on labels, advertisements, and at point of sale. This analysis highlighted outstanding First Amendment questions on permissible wording and formatting requirements and the need for evidence and rationales that focus on specific health harms of sugar-sweetened beverages. Warnings on labels and at point of sale may pose fewer First Amendment concerns than on advertisements. CONCLUSIONS Sugar-sweetened beverage warning policies that mirror health and safety warnings long established as permissible on other consumer products should be considered constitutional; however, evolving First Amendment jurisprudence leaves outstanding questions, especially on the interpretation of controversy, formatting requirements, and levels of required specificity for warning language. INTRODUCTION Early detection screening tools are needed to aid in preventing vascular complications associated with type 2 diabetes. As low muscular strength is linked to increased diabetes risk, the purpose of this study is to establish muscular strength cut points for determining diabetes risk using a large, nationally representative U.S. SAMPLE METHODS Using the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, 5,108 participants aged 20-80 years (68.6% aged 20-50 years; young male participants, n=1,813, mean age=33.43 years; young female participants, n=1,692, mean age=33.39 years; older male participants, n=813, mean age=59.92 years; older female participants, n=790, mean age=60.45 years) and free of common diabetes comorbidities were included. Muscular strength was assessed using a handgrip dynamometer and normalized by adjusting for body weight. A logistic regression for survey data controlling for covariates was used to determine normalized grip strength cut points. Diabetes risk was determined using American Diabetes Association diagnostic criteria. Analyses were conducted in the summer of 2019. RESULTS Normalized grip strength significantly predicted diabetes (p=0.0332), and the cut points for detecting diabetes risk included 0.78 (young male participants), 0.57 (young female participants), 0.68 (older male participants), and 0.49 (older female participants). The risk percentages for diabetes and estimated rates reported for all subgroups were comparable, and the risk percentages included 6.84 (95% CI=5.32, 8.36; younger male participants), 7.49 (95% CI=5.87, 9.10; younger female participants), 5.76 (95% CI=2.34, 9.19, older male participants), and 4.27 (95% CI=2.44, 6.10; older female participants). CONCLUSIONS Normalized grip strength using the cut points proposed in this paper may be a useful screening tool for diabetes risk in apparently healthy, normotensive adults. HLA-G has been widely implicated in advanced cancers through different pathways of immunosuppression allowing tumor escape. Contrarily, HLA-E has a controversial role in the tumor escape from the immune system. IDO catabolic enzyme is known to be up-regulated in many tumors types allowing their immune escape. AZD5363 Based on these considerations, we investigated the expression of HLA-G, HLA-E and IDO molecules in endometrial cancer (EC) and their association with prognostic clinicopathologic parameters. Their expression were checked in tumoral and adjacent endometrial tissues. Both HLA-G and IDO immunostaining were significantly increased in EC tissues compared to normal residual endometrial glands (Mann Whitney U-test, p = 0.0001 and p = 0,020 respectively). However, HLA-E was highly expressed in tumoral tissues as well as in normal residual endometrial glands (respectively, 100% and 81.8%). Increased HLA-G expression levels were observed in high histological grade (grade 3), and in the non-endometrioid type 2 EC. Unexpectedly, patients with IDO Low expression had significantly impaired overall survival compared to patients with IDO High (log-rank p = 0.021). Conversely, HLA-E low expression was associated to an improved overall survival EC (log-rank p = 0.004). We concluded that, HLA-G and IDO are highly expressed in EC compared to adjacent normal endometrial tissues, that might be interesting for the EC outcome. Mothers' genetics as well as their environment, behaviors, and social determinants of health are all important factors influencing short and long term childhood outcomes. There is an emerging body of literature investigating the extent to which fathers also contribute to their offspring's future health. We review fathers' impact on short term birth outcomes, longer term health, and neurodevelopment to emphasize the inter-relatedness of individual paternal traits. Factors that are linked to offspring outcomes include paternal demographics, race, stress, marriage and support, mental health, and the baseline health and behaviors of fathers. Several methodologic issues exist in current research such as maternal report of paternal information. Mechanisms proposed regarding paternal effect on progeny health range from genetic to reduction of stress of mothers through support. These are varied, possibly inter-related, and difficult to isolate as a single etiology. Future initiatives need to support fathers to allow them to support their families.
