The symptoms experienced by women with diabetes overlap with those of women with breast cancer and diabetes can worsen breast cancer symptoms. Studying the impact of diabetes on symptoms experienced by women with breast cancer can contribute to assessment and intervention strategies and facilitate the management of symptoms in this patient population.

We analyzed data from a sample of 164 breast cancer patients in order to examine symptoms associated with comorbid diabetes. Data were collected by postal survey.

A sizeable percentage of the women (23.8%) had a reported history of diabetes. African American women with breast cancer, those with an annual income less than $35,000, and those who were on disability were more likely to have comorbid diabetes (p < 0.05 in each instance). Breast cancer survivors with diabetes were more likely to report having major problems with their health than women without diabetes (p < 0.05). Compared to women without diabetes, breast cancer survivors with diabetes were also more likely to report preoccupation with being ill (p < 0.07) and tenderness at surgical site (p < 0.06), and the associations were of borderline significance.

Cancer survivors who have diabetes experience more problems with their health and preoccupation with being ill than breast cancer survivors who lack a history of diabetes. Additional research is warranted to examine symptoms and problems in living among breast cancer survivors, particularly those who are African American.

The characteristic chemical structure of capsanthin containing a keto group in conjunction with a long chain of 11 conjugated dienes is responsible for its strong radical scavenging and singlet oxygen quenching ability. Chemopreventive, antitumour, skin photo-protective, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities demonstrated by capsanthin are a consequence of its potent antioxidant action. Anti-obesity, anti-adipogenic, and antihyperlipidaemic activities are some of the more important features of capsanthin. With natural origin, bright red colour, and array of health benefits, capsanthin has a potential to be translated into a commercial cosmeceutical, nutraceutical, and/or pharmaceutical. However, the very low aqueous solubility of capsanthin is responsible for its highly variable and poor oral bioavailability. Moreover, its susceptibility to degradation due to heat, light, oxygen, and moisture poses challenges in the development of stable formulations for this otherwise meritorious compound. The current review presents various pharmacological activities of capsanthin and their underlying mechanisms. The review further discusses hitherto explored formulation strategies to improve solubility and stability of capsanthin. Graphical abstract. The purpose of this study is to explore how professional employment impacts mental health among people with mental illness, and how having a mental illness impacts job performance, both positively and negatively. The research is based on in-depth interview data from 56 professionals diagnosed with mental illness, and the interview transcripts are analyzed in accordance with the flexible coding model of qualitative data analysis. We find that working conditions of professional jobs pose challenges to managing symptoms of mental illness, including the pressures of responsibility and exposure to secondary trauma. However, professional employment also provides benefits such as social connections and feeling accountable. Similarly, symptoms cause problems at work like having angry outbursts, yet experience with mental illness informs job performance such as by increasing empathy with others. We use these findings to recommend new directions for research and argue for inclusion of people with mental illness in the workplace. The properties of some types of noncovalent interactions formed by triplet diphenylcarbene (DPC3) have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM) studies. The DPC3···LA (LA = AlF3, SiF4, PF5, SF2, ClF) complexes have been analyzed from their equilibrium geometries, binding energies, and properties of electron density. The triel bond in the DPC3···AlF3 complex exhibits a partially covalent nature, with the binding energy - 65.7 kJ/mol. The tetrel bond, pnicogen bond, chalcogen bond, and halogen bond in the DPC3···LA (LA = SiF4, PF5, SF2, ClF) complexes show the character of a weak closed-shell noncovalent interaction. Polarization plays an important role in the formation of the studied complexes. The strength of intermolecular interaction decreases in the order LA = AlF3 > ClF > SF2 > SiF4 > PF5. The electron spin density transfers from the radical DPC3 to ClF and SF2 in the formation of halogen bond and chalcogen bond, but for the DPC3···AlF3/SiF4/PF5 complexes, the transfer of electron spin density is minimal.

Civilian firearm-inflicted penetrating brain injury (PBI) carries high morbidity and mortality. Concurrently, the evidence base guiding management decisions remains limited. Faced with large volume of PBI patients, we have made observations in relation to coagulopathy and cerebrovascular injuries. We here review this literature in addition to the question about early prognostication as it may inform neurosurgical decision-making.

The triad of coagulopathy, low motor score, and radiographic compression of basal cisterns comprises a phenotype of injury with exceedingly high mortality. PBI leads to high rates of cerebral arterial and venous injuries, and projectile trajectory is emerging as an independent predictor of outcome. The combination of coagulopathy with cerebrovascular injury creates a specific endophenotype. The nature and role of coagulopathy remain to be deciphered, and consideration to the use of tranexamic acid should be given. Linsitinib cost Prospective controlled trials are needed to create clinical evidence free of patient selection bias.
