The 77 Se NMR spectra of selenate were studied under various circumstances, such as concentration, pH, temperature, ionic strength, and D2 OH2 O ratio, in order to examine its potential as a water-soluble internal chemical shift standard. The performance of selenate as a chemical shift reference and that of other attempted ones from the literature (dimethyl selenide, tetramethylsilane/TMS, and 3-(trimethylsilyl)propane-1-sulfonate/DSS) was also explored. The uncertainty in the resulting chemical shift relative to the effective spectral width is comparable to that of DSS. Compared to the currently prevalent water-soluble external chemical shift reference, selenic acid solution, the properties of internal selenate are much more favorable in terms of ease of use. We have also demonstrated that selenate can be used in reducing media, which is inevitable for the analysis of selenol compounds. Thus, it can be stated that sodium selenate is a robust internal chemical shift reference in aqueous media for 77 Se NMR measurements; the chemical shift of this reference in a solution containing 5 V/V% D2 O at 25°C and 0.15 mol·dm-3 ionic strength is 1048.65 ppm relative to 60 V/V% dimethyl selenide in CDCl3 and 1046.40 ppm relative to the 1 H signal of 0.03 V/V% TMS in CDCl3 . In summary, a water-soluble, selenium-containing internal chemical shift reference compound was introduced for 77 Se NMR measurements for the first time in the literature, and with the aforementioned results all previous 77 Se measurements can be converted to a unified scale defined by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Many people enjoy sad music, and the appeal for tragedy is widespread among the consumers of film and literature. The underlying mechanisms of such aesthetic experiences are not well understood. We tested whether pleasure induced by sad, unfamiliar instrumental music is explained with a homeostatic or a reward theory, each of which is associated with opposite patterns of changes in the key hormones. Sixty-two women listened to sad music (or nothing) while serum was collected for subsequent measurement of prolactin (PRL) and oxytocin (OT) and stress marker (cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone) concentrations. Two groups of participants were recruited on the basis of low and high trait empathy. In the high empathy group, PRL and OT levels were significantly lower with music compared with no music. And compared to the low empathy group, the high empathy individuals reported an increase of positive mood and higher ratings of being moved with music. AGI-6780 solubility dmso None of the stress markers showed any changes across the conditions or the groups. These hormonal changes, inconsistent with the homeostatic theory proposed by Huron, exhibit a pattern expected of general reward. Our findings illuminate how unfamiliar and low arousal music may give rise to pleasurable experiences.Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic health condition exacerbated by negative emotional stress experiences. In the current study, we examined whether the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic coincided with an increase in stress experiences and accordingly an aggravation of disease activity in IBD patients. Sixty-three IBD patients (30 Crohn's disease or CD, 33 ulcerative colitis) completed an online survey during the COVID-19-related lockdown, assessing clinical disease activity, disease-related quality of life, presence of functional gastrointestinal symptoms, social isolation and stress experiences. Scores were then compared to pre-lockdown baseline screening. The pandemic yielded a significant baseline-to-lockdown increase in emotional stress and social isolation. Stress increments, particularly those occasioned by interpersonal tension and excessive interpersonal proximity, were associated with a worsening of functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Exacerbations of loneliness coincided with an escalation of CD activity, functional gastrointestinal symptoms and a decline in subjective health. Lastly, COVID-19 anxiety was significantly related to CD symptom severity and social dysfunction. link2 The findings show that shifts in IBD expression are closely linked to changes in emotional stress experiences and interpersonal relatedness. As such, they contribute to a better understanding of inter-individual differences in IBD progression and provide leads for therapeutic interventions.Congenital esophageal web is a very rare type of esophageal atresia (EA) and is considered as Type IV atresia in Kluth's classification. Type IV EA is further classified into subgroups according to the location of web and the presence of tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). Herein, we present a newborn having Type IV1a EA who was initially suspected as isolated EA and has co-existing malrotation together with the review of the literature. A newborn having congenital esophageal web was admitted with antenatal ultrasonography revealing polyhydramnios, dilated stomach, and duodenum. Abdominal X-ray revealed a gasless abdomen suggesting isolated EA. The upper gastrointestinal series confirmed complete obstruction at the lower esophagus. Bronchoscopy performed excluding TEF. Laparotomy revealed intestinal malrotation and the absence of another GI webs. Gastrotomy was performed and mucosal web at GEJ was seen by pushing nasogastric catheter. Web excision and Ladd procedure were performed. Congenital esophageal web is an extremely rare type of esophageal anomaly that can be only classified in Kluth classification. A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosis especially in newborns with the gasless abdomen and esophageal obstruction at the level of GEJ. Preoperative bronchoscopy is mandatory to exclude an associating TEF. Surgical exploration via laparotomy is beneficial for exploring additional GIS anomalies. We report a novel glycan array architecture that binds the mannose-specific glycan binding protein, concanavalin A (ConA), with sub-femtomolar avidity. A new radical photopolymerization developed specifically for this application combines the grafted-from thiol-(meth)acrylate polymerization with thiol-ene chemistry to graft glycans to the growing polymer brushes. The propagation of the brushes was studied by carrying out this grafted-to/grafted-from radical photopolymerization (GTGFRP) at >400 different conditions using hypersurface photolithography, a printing strategy that substantially accelerates reaction discovery and optimization on surfaces. The effect of brush height and the grafting density of mannosides on the binding of ConA to the brushes was studied systematically, and we found that multivalent and cooperative binding account for the unprecedented sensitivity of the GTGFRP brushes. This study further demonstrates the ease with which new chemistry can be tailored for an application as a result of the advantages of hypersurface photolithography.Herein we report a Pd-catalyzed dearomative methoxyallylation of 3-nitroindoles with readily available allyl carbonates. Good yields (up to 86%) and diastereoselectivity (up to >201 dr) are obtained for a wide range of substrates. The compatibility of gram-scale synthesis and the relatively low catalyst loading (down to 1 mol% of [Pd]) enhance the practicality of this method. The kinetic experiments indicate that the rate-determining step of this reaction is the nucleophilic attack of the alkoxide anion.
Plasma fatty acids (FAs) are associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome. The aim of our study is to assess the relationship between fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption and plasma FAs and their subtypes.
Plasma FAs are assessed in a cross-sectional analysis of a subsample of 240 subjects from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Participants are categorized into four groups of fruit, vegetable, and fat intake according to the food frequency questionnaire. Plasma FA analysis is performed using gas chromatography. Associations between FAs and F&V consumption are adjusted for age, sex, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), total energy intake, and alcohol consumption. Plasma saturated FAs are lower in groups with high F&V consumption (-1.20mg cL
[95% CI [-2.22, -0.18], p-value = 0.021), especially when fat intake is high (-1.74mg cL
[95% CI [-3.41, -0.06], p-value = 0.042). Total FAs and n-6 polyunsaturated FAs tend to be lower in high consumers of F&V only in the high-fat intake groups.
F&V consumption is associated with lower plasma saturated FAs when fat intake is high. These findings suggest that F&V consumption may have different associations with plasma FAs depending on their subtype and on the extent of fat intake.

A comparative life cycle assessment of a natural gas furnace and a cascade heat pump was conducted to show the reductions in environmental impacts, such as global warming potential, energy used, and cost savings. The analysis used environmental data from 2020 for Toronto, Ontario, Engineering Equation Solver, and Sustainable Minds. The results of this comparative assessment demonstrate that implementing a cascade heat pump for heating purposes reduces the global warming potential by 85.4% when compared to a typical natural gas furnace. Moreover, the negative impacts on human health are reduced in every category. Specifically, the factors that can cause harm to human respiratory systems are decreased by almost 10 times when using the cascade heat pump as an alternative heating system. This is important since such systems are used in high density residential areas where the impact on human health can be far greater. Lastly, it is found that the highest CO2 -equivalent emissions are released during the usage life cycle stage in both heating systems at 18 883 kg of CO2 -equivalent, and 104 CO2 -equivalent for the furnace and heat pump, respectively. The cascade heat pump releases approximately 1% of carbon emissions than the emissions released by currently used heating systems, which are natural gas furnaces. link3 Integr Environ Assess Manag 2021;001-9. © 2021 SETAC.
The aims of the study are to explore workplace violence perpetrated by patients or visitors from the perspective of hospital ward managers and to describe how ward managers perceive their leadership role and manage related incidents.
Few studies focus on workplace violence from the perspective of ward managers even though they are the closest managers to the operational staff.
Fifteen semistructured interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis.
Four categories emerged the face of workplace violence, a two-fold assignment, strive towards readiness to act, and managing incidents.
While the most common acts of workplace violence are considered less serious and related to patients' medical conditions or dissatisfied visitors, hospital organizations focus on serious but rarely occurring incidents. Consequently, ward managers have limited opportunities to ensure a safe work environment on an everyday basis.
To support ward managers' occupational safety and health management, workplace violence prevention and management should be acknowledged as an important responsibility for senior management in hospitals.
