The genus Enterobacter is a common cause of nosocomial infections. Historically, the most frequent Enterobacter species were those of Enterobacter cloacae complex and Enterobacter aerogenes. In 2019, E. aerogenes was re-classified as Klebsiella aerogenes owing to its higher genotypic similarity with the genus Klebsiella. Our objective was to characterise and compare the clinical profiles of bacteraemia caused by E. cloacae and K. aerogenes.
This 3-year multicentre, prospective cohort study enrolled consecutive patients with bacteraemia by E. cloacae or K. aerogenes. Baseline characteristics, bacteraemia features (source, severity, treatment), antibiotic susceptibility, resistance mechanisms and mortality were analysed.
The study included 285 patients with bacteraemia [196 (68.8%) E. cloacae and 89 (31.2%) K. aerogenes]. The groups showed no differences in age, sex, previous use of invasive devices, place of acquisition, sources or severity at onset. The Charlson score was higher among patients with E. cloacae bacteraemia [2 (1-4) vs. 1 (0.5-3); P=0.018], and previous antibiotic therapy was more common in patients with K. aerogenes bacteraemia (57.3% vs. 41.3%; P=0.01). Mortality was 19.4% for E. cloacae and 20.2% for K. aerogenes (P = 0.869). Antibiotic susceptibility was similar for both species, and the incidence of multidrug resistance or ESBL production was low (6% and 5.3%, respectively), with no differences between species.
Bacteraemias caused by E. cloacae and K. aerogenes share similar patient profiles, presentation and prognosis. Patients with E. cloacae bacteraemia had more co-morbidities and those with K. aerogenes bacteraemia had received more antibiotics.

It has been reported that preoperative nutritional status in some gastrointestinal cancers has a significant effect on postoperative prognosis. However, there are few reports on esophageal cancer, especially for esophageal cancer patients who have undergone neoadjuvant therapy and surgery. Psoas muscle index (PMI) is widely known as an index for assessing preoperative nutritional status, and has recently been reported for its prognostic value in many malignancies. The aim of this study was to investigate and evaluate the clinical results in our hospital using the PMI method.
We retrospectively investigated esophageal cancer in patients (clinical stage II or III) who underwent neoadjuvant therapy and surgical treatment (R0 cases) from January 2008 to December 2015. Applicable 63 cases were entered accordingly. In our hospital, nutritional supplements are used for nutritional management during preoperative adjuvant therapy, and these are administered to patients who have difficulty ingesting nutrition by feal status by intervention from the time of neoadjuvant therapy.
Improving nutritional status before surgery was shown to improve short-term prognosis in patients with esophageal cancer. It is hence suggested that it is important to maintain or improve nutritional status by intervention from the time of neoadjuvant therapy.
The prevalence of convenience and beverage stores in Taiwan provides an environment for children to access different beverages. To our knowledge, the relationship between beverage consumption types and anthropometrics in children has not been reported in Taiwan. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the consumption frequency of beverage type and anthropometrics in third-grade children.
This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 10 elementary schools in 12 administrative regions distributed evenly throughout Taipei City from June 2017 to December 2018. Parents of 515 children completed a questionnaire with written instructions, which was designed to collect demographic characteristics, frequency of consumed beverage types, and anthropometrics. This study was novel because beverage types were categorized based on sugar and protein contents, namely nutritious, sugar, nutritious and sugar, and non-nutritious and sugar-free. The differences in height and body weight between intake freide more helpful information for policymakers.
This was the first study conducted on third-grade children in Taiwan showing the beverage consumption type was associated with anthropometrics. Nutritious beverages appear to be a better choice for growth in children. Nevertheless, additional related studies, including an overall assessment of children's calorie and nutrient intakes and related dietary behaviors, are warranted to provide more helpful information for policymakers.
There is an increasing trend of skipping meals, especially breakfast and dinner, in China. Previous studies on the association of meal skipping with lipid profiles and blood glucose have yielded inconsistent results.
A national representative survey of 47 841 adults (age ≥ 45 y) was conducted in China. Frequency of breakfast, lunch, and dinner consumption were assessed with a questionnaire. Blood triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose were measured using standard methods. Generalized linear models were used to estimate relative concentrations and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
Of 37 355 participants included in the analysis, the prevalence of skipping breakfast, lunch, and dinner was 9.06%, 0.67%, and 0.67%, respectively. Breakfast skippers are more likely to reside in rural areas, while lunch and dinner skippers tend to be urban residents. IKE modulator chemical structure Compared with regular breakfast consumption, skipping breakfast was associated with 10.6% (95% CI, 8.3-12.9%) higher concentrations of triacylglycerols, 5.5% (95% CI, 4.7-6.3%) higher total cholesterol, 7.7% (95% CI, 6.5-8.9%) higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 2.4% (95% CI, 1.5-3.4%) lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and 1.6% (95% CI, 1.0-2.1%) lower fasting blood glucose. Significant linear trends were observed for days of skipping breakfast per week and biomarker concentrations. No association was found for lunch or dinner skipping. The higher triacylglycerols and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol associated with skipping breakfast were more evident in participants who were overweight or obese, and those who were physically inactive.
Our findings suggest a worse lipid profile of breakfast skippers. Not skipping breakfast might benefit cardiovascular disease prevention in Chinese adults.
