A series of Zn-Al-Li alloys with potential application in bioresorbable implants were cast, thermomechanically processed and tested. The formation of secondary phases, such as LiZn4, LiZn3Al and Al3Li, contributed to both dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement of the matrix (η-phase) during the hot-extrusion process, leading to grain sizes as small as 1.75 μm for Zn-4Al-0.6Li alloy (wt%). This alloy exhibited an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 451 MPa, a total elongation of 46% and a corrosion rate of 60 μm/year in simulated body fluid. The grain refinement played a major role in increasing the strength, but it also weakened the basal texture and promoted non-basal slip and grain boundary sliding, thus contributing to the increased plastic deformation of the alloy. The corrosion rate was affected by a layer of zinc oxide and phosphate formed in the early stages of the immersion tests. The corrosion products protected the substrate and tended to reduce the corrosion rate over time. The developed Zn-4Al-0.6Li and Zn-6Al-0.4Li alloys which showed promising mechanical and corrosion properties appeared to be cytocompatible in the mouse fibroblast cell line and human umbilical mesenchymal stem cells making them promising candidates for bioresorbable stent and implant applications.Manufacturing macroscale cell-laden architectures is one of the biggest challenges faced nowadays in the domain of tissue engineering. Such living constructs, in fact, pose strict requirements for nutrients and oxygen supply that can hardly be addressed through simple diffusion in vitro or without a functional vasculature in vivo. In this context, in the last two decades, a substantial amount of work has been carried out to develop smart materials that could actively provide oxygen-release to contrast local hypoxia in large-size constructs. This review provides an overview of the currently available oxygen-releasing materials and their synthesis and mechanism of action, highlighting their capacities under in vitro tissue cultures and in vivo contexts. XCT790 solubility dmso Additionally, we also showcase an emerging concept, herein termed as "living materials as releasing systems", which relies on the combination of biomaterials with photosynthetic microorganisms, namely algae, in an "unconventional" attempt to supply the damaged or re-growing tissue with the necessary supply of oxygen. We envision that future advances focusing on tissue microenvironment regulated oxygen-supplying materials would unlock an untapped potential for generating a repertoire of anatomic scale, living constructs with improved cell survival, guided differentiation, and tissue-specific biofunctionality. The present investigation is the first report containing design and synthesis of novel calixarene derivatives (6-8) and their inclusion complexes (IC6-IC8) with Chloramphenicol (CAM). After synthesis, the antibiotic CAM, calixarene derivatives (6-8) and their inclusion complexes (IC6-IC8) were successfully incorporated into biodegradable PVA and/or PLA nanofiber skeleton by electrospinning. The obtained electrospun nanofibers were tested and compared for inhibition of bacterial growth towards multiple bacterial species (Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis). Moreover, we evaluated thermal decomposition and release profile of CAM by spectrophotometric methods. The results suggested that CAM can be successfully encapsulated in nanofiber webs by inclusion complexation, and these fibers could be used as a part of new controlled release packaging system for food preservation. We formulated a pH-sensitive chlorhexidine-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) modified with poly-(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (CHX-loaded/MSN-PLGA) and incorporated into experimental resin-based dentin adhesives at 5 and 10 wt%. Nanocarriers were characterized in terms of morphology, physicochemical features, spectral analyses, drug-release kinetics at varying pH and its effect on dentin-bound proteases was investigated. The modified dentin adhesives were characterized for cytotoxicity, antimicrobial activity, degree of conversion (DC) along with CHX release, micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) and nano-leakage expression were studied at different pH values and storage time. CHX-loaded/MSN-PLGA nanocarriers exhibited a significant pH-dependent drug release behavior than CHX-loaded/MSN nanocarriers without PLGA modification. The highest percentage of CHX release was seen with 10 wt% CHX-loaded/MSN-PLGA doped adhesive at a pH of 5.0. CHX-loaded/MSN-PLGA modified adhesives exhibited more profound antibiofilm characteristics against S. mutans and more sustained CHX-release which was pH dependent. After 6 months in artificial saliva at varying pH, the 5 wt% CHX-loaded/MSN-PLGA doped adhesive showed excellent bonding under SEM/TEM, higher μTBS, and least nano-leakage expression. The pH-sensitive CHX-loaded/MSN-PLGA could be of crucial advantage for resin-dentin bonding applications especially in reduced pH microenvironment resulting from biofilm formation; and the activation of dentin-bound proteases as a consequence of acid etching and acidic content of bonding resin monomers.Nanoparticles (NPs) have gained importance in technological advances owing to their user friendly enhanced and efficient physical, chemical, and biological characteristics compared to their bulk counterparts. Biological synthesis of NPs by using a microorganism, enzymes, or plant extracts offers a greener and eco-friendly approach besides many advantages over physical or chemical approaches. This study reports the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Nostoc muscorum NCCU 442 aqueous extract as the reducing and capping agent for AgNPs synthesis. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-VIS spectrum, SEM, EDS, TEM, AFM, DLS and XRD. Results showed distinguishing polycrystalline nature of synthesized AgNPs with surface plasmon significant band in the size range of 6-45nm with average 30 size nm. FT-IR study revealed the role of secondary metabolites present in aqueous extract for the synthesis of AgNPs. Biological activities of purified AgNPs as antioxidant and antibacterial potential showed the highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 902.
