The feasibility of reverse osmosis (RO) for treating coking wastewaters from a steel manufacturing plant, rich in ammonium thiocyanate was assessed. DOW FILMTECTM SW30 membrane performance with synthetic and real thiocyanate-containing solutions was established at the laboratory and (onsite) pilot plant scale. No short-term fouling was observed, and the data followed the known solution-diffusion model and the film theory. Those models, together with non-steady state mass balances, were used in simulations that aided to design a full scale two-stage RO plant for thiocyanate separation.

The mechanism of action of the ketogenic diet (KD), an effective treatment for pharmacotherapy refractory epilepsy, is not fully elucidated. The present study examined the effects of two metabolites accumulating under KD-beta-hydroxybutyrate (ßHB) and decanoic acid (C10) in hippocampal murine (HT22) neurons.

A mouse HT22 hippocampal neuronal cell line was used in the present study. Cellular lipids were analyzed in cell cultures incubated with high (standard) versus low glucose supplemented with ßHB or C10. Cellular cholesterol was analyzed using HPLC, while phospholipids and sphingomyelin (SM) were analyzed using HPTLC.

HT22 cells showed higher cholesterol, but lower SM levels in the low glucose group without supplements as compared to the high glucose groups. While cellular cholesterol was reduced in both ßHB- and C10-incubated cells, phospholipids were significantly higher in C10-incubated neurons. Ratios of individual phospholipids to cholesterol were significantly higher in ßHB- and C10-incubated neurons as compared to controls.

Changes in the ratios of individual phospholipids to cholesterol in HT22 neurons suggest a possible alteration in the composition of the plasma membrane and organelle membranes, which may provide insight into the working mechanism of KD metabolites ßHB and C10.

Hypertension accompanying a Wilms tumor occurs in about 10-27% of children, but cardiomyopathy associated with a Wilms tumor is very rarely described. This publication presents a case of a 9-month-old girl with a bilateral Wilms tumor accompanied by dilated cardiomyopathy since her initial cancer diagnosis, as well as her off-protocol treatment. The severe condition of the child forced the application of off-protocol treatment, i.e., accelerated resection of a larger tumor, which enabled the improvement of heart performance and made subsequent therapy possible. In the course of the presented treatment, a gradual normalization of cardiac ventricular function and contractility was observed. In conclusion, a massive abdominal tumor associated with abdominal compartment syndrome compromised the functioning of the cardiovascular system in the young child. Therefore, earlier removal of Wilms tumors in patients with heart failure should be considered. This may result in the improvement of cardiovascular function and the possibility of further therapy.Bacterial wilt of tomato is a destructive disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum throughout the world. An endophytic actinomycete with antagonistic activity, designated strain LD120T, was isolated from moss (Physcomitrium sphaericum (Ludw) Fuernr). 2-Deoxy-D-glucose cell line The biocontrol test demonstrated that co-inoculation by the isolate and the pathogen gave the greatest biocontrol efficiency of 63.6%. Strain LD120T had morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomic properties identical to those of members of the genus Streptomyces. The diamino acid present in the cell wall was LL-diaminopimelic acid. Arabinose, glucose, rhamnose, and ribose occured in whole cell hydrolysates. The menaquinones detected were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6), MK-9(H8), and MK-9(H2). The polar lipid profile was found to contain diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol. The major cellular fatty acids were found to be iso-C160, iso-C170, anteiso-C150, and C161 ω7c. The DNA G+C content of the draft genome sequence, consisting of 7.6 Mbp, was 73.1%. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain LD120T belongs to the genus Streptomyces, with the highest sequence similarity to Streptomyces azureus NRRL B-2655T (98.97%), but phylogenetically clustered with Streptomyces anandii NRRL B-3590T (98.62%). Multilocus sequence analysis based on five other house-keeping genes (atpD, gyrB, rpoB, recA, and trpB) and the low level of DNA-DNA relatedness, as well as phenotypic differences, allowed strain LD120T to be differentiated from its closely related strains. Therefore, the strain was concluded to represent a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomycesphyscomitrii sp. nov. was proposed. The type strain was LD120T (=CCTCC AA 2018049T = DSM 110638T).Wound management remains a challenge worldwide, although there are several developed wound dressing materials for the management of acute and chronic wounds. The wound dressings that are currently used include hydrogels, films, wafers, nanofibers, foams, topical formulations, transdermal patches, sponges, and bandages. Hydrogels exhibit unique features which make them suitable wound dressings such as providing a moist environment for wound healing, exhibiting high moisture content, or creating a barrier against bacterial infections, and are suitable for the management of exuding and granulating wounds. Biopolymers have been utilized for their development due to their non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties. Hydrogels have been prepared from biopolymers such as cellulose and chitosan by crosslinking with selected synthetic polymers resulting in improved mechanical, biological, and physicochemical properties. They were useful by accelerating wound re-epithelialization and also mimic skin structure, inducing skin regeneration.
