Deleting catalytic converters is also not uncommon, but is not something we recommend as it can negatively affect sound and performance. Trucks are probably the most common vehicles to be fully straight piped from front to back. Or...you could do what I am trying to do right now and up-sell a particle filter.
The 6.7L Power Stroke’s secondary fuel filter (not the one along the frame rail) is notorious for cracking. This on-engine fuel filter is contained within a thin plastic cartridge and the cap is prone to becoming brittle and splitting. If the cracks are serious enough, fuel can leak into the lifter valley, where—thanks to the 6.7L engine’s reverse cylinder head design—the steamy-hot exhaust manifolds are located. That’s right, the factory fuel filter assembly is a potential fire hazard. The ultimate fix is an improved, aftermarket filter cap, such as the anodized billet-aluminum piece from Fleece Performance Engineering shown here. The company’s all-inclusive fuel filter fix includes the aforementioned cap, quick-disconnect fittings and a pair of high-quality Donaldson spin-on fuel filters.
Modern muscle cars like Ford Mustangs, Chevy Camaros and Dodge Challengers and Chargers have sets of middle and rear resonators/mufflers. This arrangement is also common in sports cars both foreign and domestic. I tried to source bungs but I have no idea where to get a new weldable bung at.

Even though all years of the 6.4 Powerstroke were problematic, the main year to avoid was 2008, which was the first year it came out. The 2008 model was plagued with problems that mainly involved the emissions systems, which were frustrating and costly to fix. The stock radiator on the 6.4 Powerstroke didn’t hold up well against regular wear and tear. It often develops leaks, which means a loss of coolant that leads to overheating.

Ordering was fat and easy, the shipping was very fast as well. After hearing about the system, we wanted to test it out. So we called Elite Diesel Engineering and informed them that we are building an off road only, chase truck and wanted to do a little testing of the system. To make a kit like this work, custom tuning has to be used to let the computer know what we removed. So we also have a custom tuned SCT programmer done by Tadd at Elite Diesel Engineering on the way.

If you like options, there are both factory and aftermarket solutions for the OEM ’11-’14 6.7L Power Stroke turbo. Going the factory route, you can install a ’15-’19 unit, the Garrett GT37, essentially using 100-percent OEM, second-generation engine parts (SPE Motorsport’s retrofit install kit is pictured here).
By that we mean, how much horsepower it takes to spin the torque converter, the transmission, driveshaft, pinion, differential gears, axle shafts and even the wheels. On average, it takes about 20 percent of the engine's horsepower to move everything. At SPELAB, we pride ourselves on our stringent quality control and innovative product development. Each part is rigorously tested to ensure it meets our high standards of performance and durability.
This was a significant problem with the 6.4 Powerstroke, especially in the beginning. If you are having this problem, you could try unclogging it with a DPF cleaner and a DPF cleaning kit. Out of the box, the 6.4 Powerstroke was rated for 350 horsepower, but it’s possible to get as much as 500 horsepower or more by replacing stock parts with 6.4 diesel performance parts. The successor to the 6.4 Powerstroke was the 6.7, rated for 390 horsepower. Loudness can be a pro or a con depending on your taste and application. Straight pipes can usually deliver loudness, but at the price of good sound quality.

Opt for a reputable company with experience in remanufacturing diesel engines. A thorough remanufacturing process, including disassembly, inspection, machining, and reassembly with high-quality parts, can result in an engine that performs like new and has a long lifespan. Muffler deletes and straight pipe exhaust can provide a lot of loudness, but honestly not much else. Rough sound and potential legal issues easily outweigh the fact that straight pipes are by default the cheapest exhaust option. Aftermarket exhaust systems and mufflers can give you the sound and flow you want without the negatives that come with straight pipe exhaust.
The sound quality from straight pipes and muffler deletes is often very low, and simply cannot match the sound quality of performance mufflers. If you’re thinking about changing the exhaust on your vehicle, you may have considered straight pipe exhaust or a muffler delete. In this article, we weigh the pros and cons of muffler deletes and straight pipes against aftermarket performance mufflers. Once you've tuned your 6.4 Powerstroke it becomes extremely important to improve exhaust flow to help lower engine temps and EGTs. These engines suffer a number of common problems that become more likely once boost levels are turned up and EGTs start creeping up. I had one come out today just a wee bit rough toward the end damaging the threads just enough so that the new sensor's fitting would not seat and secure the sensor. I initially tried a thread chaser but that actually cocked in the bore causing more problems.Point of the story? Get the latest updates on new products and upcoming sales. Since there wasn't any oil in the intake tube I didn't check the crank case pressure but when I put it back together I'll check it.
Whereas quality performance mufflers cost at least $80, straight pipes can cost as little as $20 plus installation. As you can imagine, it definitely pays to address the factory cold-side intercooler pipe before it fails, and the diesel aftermarket is loaded with replacement options. Another kit, offered by H&S Motorsports, uses a stainless-reinforced, multi-ply silicone hose as a direct replacement—a piece that’s rated for high heat and triple-digit boost. Some aftermarket cold-side intercooler pipe replacement systems also feature an adapter assembly for the factory throttle body.

Due to this pressure, the fuel flow is hugely disturbed and slowed down. Therefore, when you remove this filter, the fuel flows much easier and faster, increasing the overall fuel mileage. As soon as we told the owner of the truck about the new system being on the way, he got a little too excited.
All clamps were placed at the joints and hand tightened. If this vehicle ever plans on driving on the road, this will need to be reinstalled. The top hanger was sprayed with Royal Purple's Max Film to help make removal easier.
Built from heavy Duty aluminized steel our Installer Series performance exhaust systems offer a value price without compromising on the quality built into every component. While the seams are a major point of rust through with some budget systems our fully sealed tubing adds years to your system. Constructed to the same specifications as our top of the line Pro Series we back this line with an industry leading 3 Year Warranty. One popular option though is to increase the size of the exhaust and open it up to flow better (i.e. less restrictive). With the 6.4 and many of the newer engines, there is emissions equipment that should not be removed. As a result, many companies offer DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) back exhaust systems.
Today, S&S Diesel Motorsport’s CP4 to DCR pump conversion offers them ultimate peace of mind. Co-developed with PurePower Technologies (the aftermarket division of Stanadyne), the company’s system replaces the problematic Bosch CP4.2 with a DCR high-pressure fuel pump. Better yet, it too is CARB-compliant and supports improved performance (thanks to a 25-percent increase in displacement over the CP4.2). This is the end-all, be-all solution for the problematic CP4.2.

For diesel fans who appreciate the inner workings of engines, the 6.4 Powerstroke engine boasts a mix of innovation and refinement. Despite some drawbacks, it has hidden qualities that shine through for those in the know. Fuel-contaminated engine oil was another problem with the 6.4 Powerstroke. In this scenario, fuel dilutes and contaminates the engine oil, which reduces the oil’s ability to lower the engine temperature. The purpose of an oil cooler is to keep the engine oil temperature at a reasonable level so that the engine won’t overheat. A clogged oil cooler is a common problem on the 6.4 Powerstroke and it can result in overheating.
With a focus on customer satisfaction, we deliver excellence and innovation in the world of diesel performance. Exhaust Material – Available in aluminized steel or T-409 stainless steel. Aluminized steel is our most popular but will eventually accumulate surface rust. So if your testing to see if you actually got stainless; beware that a magnet will still stick to it. We suggest the stainless upgrade if you regularly operate your truck on salted winter roads. Custom tuning adjusts various aspects of the engine’s operation, such as fuel delivery and timing, to enhance overall performance.
On first-generation engines, the Garrett GT32 SST became infamous for overspeed failure. And even though it’s graced with an electronic wastegate, it isn’t enough to bleed off all the drive pressure created at those turbine speeds. The ball bearing center section simply can’t endure the stress.
Ensure your upgrades are installed correctly for optimal performance and reliability. Follow our detailed installation guides and get the most out of your modifications. From 6.4 powerstroke straight pipe -flow air intake systems to advanced exhaust setups, each modification serves a specific purpose. Combining these with proper tuning can lead to substantial improvements in performance. Our range includes various high-performance fuel pumps that provide reliability and improved functionality tailored to the 6.4L Powerstroke. Ultimately, this is our top recommendation when it comes to exhaust systems.
If you own a truck with the 6.4 Powerstroke, chances are you’ve probably already encountered some or all of these problems. One of the main reasons for getting a diesel engine is that it can typically be modified to increase horsepower, and the 6.4 Powerstroke is no different. The 6.4 Powerstroke came after the 6.0 Powerstroke, which was widely panned for its problems and poor performance. The issues with both of these engines eventually led to the end of the working relationship between Ford and Navistar and led to Ford designing its next diesel engine in-house. Another big positive about Paradox Performance Mufflers is that you don’t need a whole new exhaust system with them. Simply replacing your stock mufflers with Paradox mufflers is often enough to get a big boost of quality sound.
Built to Perform You count on your truck to handle whatever you need it to do. With MBRP performance exhaust you can make that happen with up to 18 more horsepower and 28 ft/lb more torque not to mention lower EGTs. More pulling power, improved throttle response, greater fuel efficiency, with an MBRP diesel performance exhaust you will be amazed at what your truck can do. Minimize Backpressure The secret to getting more out of your diesel engine is to give it lots of cool, clean air. The only way that you can get fresh air in is to get the hot air out.
But long lengths of straight pipe often results in “cackling”, “popping” and other undesirable sound. Even though this practice is common, the result is often subpar sound quality. We are a one-stop diesel performance shop for everything you need. To proceed, please confirm if you would like to add this item into your cart without checking for compatibility. Otherwise, you can search for your vehicle configuration to see if it is compatible with this part.

Installation was straightforward, fitting perfectly on my vehicle without any hassle. With all of the sensors screwed in they were then plugged back into the factory harness.
The performance benefits become even more pronounced as additional modifications are made to your vehicle. While there are ways of reducing the power needed to work each of these, they are usually reserved for performance-oriented applications. For example, removing a water pump will yield around an 8 horsepower increase. But the life expectancy of an electric water pump is much less than a belt-driven pump. That's why the factory chooses to use a belt-driven pump. 1hr with basic hand tools done on the ground of your driveway or garage.

When selecting a tuning service, consider factors such as the tuner’s experience with Powerstroke engines and their ability to provide support for any future modifications or troubleshooting. Custom tuning is crucial for extracting maximum performance from your powerstroke diesel. The 6.4L Powerstroke is renowned for its powerful output and durability. Therefore, when you remove this filter, the fuel flows much easily and faster, increasing the overall fuel mileage.
Paradox goes above and beyond other performance mufflers because of their Patented Tuning Fork Technology. It’s why they have such high quality sound and highly effective “drone” control. Not only that, but virtually all places have excessive noise laws.

Designed to meet the needs of the most demanding environments, this engine provides a solid foundation for both performance enhancements and efficiency improvements.
While pushing back your oil changes can be tempting, the more you ignore caring for your engine, the more likely it is to miss major issues that can cause engine failure. A 6.4 Powerstroke can average 200,000 – 300,000 miles (322,000 – 482,000 km) with maintenance. The 6.4 Powerstroke was also known for developing cracked up-pipes. The telltale sign of this problem is excess soot on your firewall or hood. Cracked up-pipes cause a major loss of power and the only way to deal with this is to get a 6.4 up-pipe replacement. Numerous problems plagued the 6.4 Powerstroke including up-pipe leaks, radiator problems, weak pistons, DPF clogging, and issues with the oil cooler among many others issues.

(See, we normally shoot an install article in one day. That's the removal and installation of the new system.) For this install, he pulled the vehicle on the lift and removed the muffler. On the 6.4s the muffler is welded to the pipe that is bent to go up and over the axle. Later that same day, he called us to let us know the factory system was off and he was ready to install the new system. We had to let him know the new system was being shipped from Pueblo West, CO, and it wouldn't be arriving for another week or so. Not wanting to be without his truck, he decided to put a turn out pipe on the factory pipe where the muffler was and wash the underside of the truck.
It was also the first Ford engine to address newly introduced emissions standards. Known for power and not longevity, the 6.4 powerstroke has a mixed reputation for reliability. While some have praised the engine’s durability and power, others have noted common areas where it left more to be desired.
However, if we provide incorrect Fitment information, we will bear the cost. This kit is the best bang-for-your-buck full exhaust upgrade for the price. You save $70 over purchasing the units separately, and it is only $5 more than buying downpipe plus the S6242P exhaust that doesn't include the exhaust tip add-on. If you want the loudness of straight pipes without the poor sound quality, you will almost certainly be better off with a loud performance muffler like the Paradox Hot Tamale.
Fuel Mileage – Expect to see a significant increase in fuel mileage. If your DPF is plugged up your probably averaging about mpg. More or less depending on the severity of the restriction. After deleting the DPF/CAT expect to get a combined mileage of mpg. Larger tires and poor driving habits will skew mileage downward. We send you a step-by-step instruction guide and have a full time support staff to help you with any questions you may have on the installation.
This sometimes results in a slight delay between arrivals, which unfortunately wasn't communicated clearly to you beforehand. F-250, F-350 & F-450 Crew cab short bed & crew cab long bed. This will not fit the Cab & Chassis commercial style truck. Aftermarket modifications can significantly enhance the capabilities of your 6.4L Powerstroke. SPELAB offers a range of options that can improve power output, fuel efficiency, and reliability.
Right now I have 3 good bungs I cut out of RH up-pipes incase the situation ever rises again. We had our other tech completely twist off a sensor and bung leaving a quarter sized hole in the top of the DPF. Fabricated a new bung from a flat piece of steel and a M12x1.25 nut. Maybe I should have parts order two of them so we have one in stock when it comes back with a blown engine then we will have another one ready to go in. With those numbers I am surprised it didn't blow one of the glow plug connections out of the valve cover.
The company has recently released its new 4-inch aluminized straight pipe kit for the 6.4l Power Strokes. This kit is from the down pipe back and replaces the catalytic converter, DPF and muffler with straight pipe. The system is for off-road use only, but not for those who want a hood stack or something for hard core competition use.
My name is John and I will assist you with your question. In order to keep the light off, you will need to use a programmer such as a bully dog or edge tuner to turn off the light. Most people see a large increase in fuel economy after doing this and it wont take long to cover the cost of the delete kit and the programmer in the fuel you will save.

For very minimal investment, S&S Diesel Motorsport’s Gen2.1 CP4 disaster prevention kit can save you thousands in the event your 6.7L Power Stroke’s high-pressure fuel pump checks out. Its design supplies both the CP4.2 and its metering unit independently with clean, filtered diesel fuel and reroutes the CP4.2’s case fuel back to the tank. This keeps the fuel injectors, rails and lines from seeing any pump debris (a return filter isolates debris before fuel flows back to the tank).
Truck has 146,000 km on it and it's getting some slight black in the tailpipes. No sense trying to drill out the busted sensor on this one. The toolbox of every Ford Diesel technician should contain one of these, because if you have one - you won't need it.
However, please follow the return standards to ensure that the items are in new condition and do not affect their resale. If you want to return or exchange an item with no quality issues, you will be responsible for paying the return shipping fee. Please review our return policy for more information on the refund process. We understand the importance of clarity in our return procedures, both for our customers' peace of mind and for ensuring a smooth process. We've outlined our updated guidelines to facilitate efficient returns here. The longevity of a 6.4 Powerstroke engine can vary depending on several factors, including maintenance, driving conditions, and usage.
If you need further assistance, please contact our customer support. The high-pressure fuel pump was also a good part that had 20% more flow than its rivals at the time and more than its successor in the 6.7 Powerstroke. Before CP4.2 pump failure took over as the 6.7L Power Stroke’s Achilles Heel, turbo death was arguably more common.
We have designed our exhaust manifolds to have the most optimal flow while constructed to stand up to the punishing operations. Also available are Flo-Pro exhaust kits which are some of the easiest to install kits in the aftermarket. OC DIESEL offers a wide selection of Diesel Exhausts for most diesel truck, motorhome, and RV owners. Experience the benefits of increased horsepower and towing performance with our Diesel Exhausts selection.
The stock radiator is one of the parts that should be replaced with an aftermarket 6.4 radiator. One of the more infamous problems on the 6.4 Powerstroke is its weak pistons that were prone to early cracking. A cracked piston allows extra air into the cylinder, which then decreases the compression ratio.
The 6.4 Powerstroke Downpipe Back Exhaust system isn't just about removing restrictive factory components. It's about enhancing performance, improving fuel efficiency, and reducing maintenance issues related to emissions systems. Exhaust Material - Available in aluminized steel or T-409 stainless steel. If you don’t want to deal with the negatives that come with straight pipes and muffler deletes, you’ll need an alternative. But here are the most common vehicles that we see with straight pipe exhaust or muffler deletes. Before we dive into it, let’s define exactly what straight pipes and muffler deletes are.

Got the part I ordered in a timely manner, but one piece of what I ordered was missing. However, a couple days later, a box arrived with the missing piece, tapped up everywhere. With my old kit that kept leaking, an abnormal seal size and changed colors as the plastic got warm. I installed the Spelab kit and fits good and have the reassurance of the locking ring to keep it in.
Starting with the worst, we begin with the 6.7L Power Stroke’s CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. The twin-piston Bosch pump, which is responsible for pressurizing fuel as high as 30,000 psi, is notorious for self-destructing. And when it comes apart, metal debris flows out to the fuel rails, and is often sent through the engine’s expensive piezoelectric injectors. Worse yet, the fuel system’s return circuit is also contaminated, with the fuel tank, fuel supply (and return) lines and even the lift pump requiring replacement and/or cleaning. It’s a failure that, while it may only occur on 1-percent of all engines, costs upward of $10,000 to fix.
Step 10 - Admire your work, and pat yourself on the back for having already had a replacement EGT bung in your toolbox and not getting caught with your pants down. Feel good knowing you just saved your customer a ton of money and down time... In the past I have replaced EGT sensors with either two outcomes. The sensor comes out with no problems or on very rare occasion the sensor fitting totally seizes in the bung rendering the DPF damaged.
You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.). The kit was a perfect fit for my vehicle, making installation a breeze with excellent results.
The straight-through design minimizes back pressure, boosting overall performance. Please get in touch with us to learn more about our 6.4 Powerstroke exhaust systems; we’re experts in upgrading the performance of diesel engines. We’ll be happy to help you discover the best upgrades for your engine and ensure your truck is more powerful than ever before.
Remember that the 6.4 powerstroke was the first engine to feature an advanced emissions control system, including a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. With any new tech introduction, the complex systems were often linked to reliability challenges due to clogging or failure. One advantage of straight pipes is that they have very little backpressure. Straight pipes offer better flow than many popular performance mufflers. This can be helpful if you’re trying to maximize performance and fuel mileage. Years ago, 6.7L Power Stroke owners had no alternative to the CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump.
This menu will now display products relevant to your selected vehicle. Please also note that the shipping rates for many items we sell are weight-based. The weight of any such item can be found on its detail page.
Cutting may be be required to fit shorter wheelbase bed/cab configurations. All exhaust systems and DPF/CAT delete pipes are final sale and not eligible for a refund or return. However, if you receive a faulty product or the wrong product, we will send you a replacement.
The kit fits every 6.7L Power Stroke produced to date, from ’11-’24. Downwind of the turbo on a 6.7L Power Stroke, the cold-side intercooler pipe—which routes boost from the engine’s air-to-water intercooler toward the heads—is well-known for failing. The factory piece is infamous for becoming brittle over time, often cracks under boost, and some of them even explode. It’s a common failure for both ’11-’16 engines and ’17-current versions (as well as in both modified and completely stock engines), and when it strikes you’ve got a giant boost leak. Like all modern turbocharged diesels, the 6.7L Power Stroke is heavily reliant on boost pressure.
If you don't have one, you'll break one of these sensors off tomorrow in a waiting customer's truck. When the sensors break, I remove the whole unit from the truck and fix it on the bench. For the 20 minutes it takes to get it out, I find it well worth it for the extra access. We needed this for a customer bike in the shop and we were able to get this done within our timeframe. This product was exactly what I needed for my exhaust system, easy to install and works great. With all of the sensors connected and the exhaust system connected, the final eye was given to make sure everything fit perfectly before we tightened it down.
The GT37 retains VGT functionality but sports a bigger turbine wheel and a larger, single compressor wheel. The aftermarket path typically points toward the use of a fixed geometry turbo, and namely one of the many popular off-the-shelf BorgWarner S300 or S400’s. These conventional style turbochargers are rock-solid reliable and, like the GT37, can support considerably more horsepower than the restrictive factory VGT on ’11-’14 engines. Since replacing the 6.4L Power Stroke, and the problematic 6.0L Power Stroke before that, Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke has been a significant force in the world of diesel trucks. Not only has it been ultra-reliable (helping to revive the Power Stroke brand), but it’s also offered class-leading power figures for much of its production run. However, that doesn’t mean Ford’s V8 diesel is bulletproof.
Introduced in 2008 to replace the 6.0 Powerstroke, the 6.4 Powerstroke was supposed to improve on the previous engine. It was designed to be more reliable, perform better, and address emissions standards. Paradox Performance Mufflers offer industry leading sound and flow, and are made in the USA.
Despite its challenges, the 6.4 Powerstroke engine has much to offer for diesel enthusiasts. Its impressive performance, precision engineering, and ability to handle heavy-duty tasks make it a favourite among those who appreciate what lies under the hood. Choosing the right Powerstroke engine can feel like navigating a maze of options, especially for diesel enthusiasts well-versed in the industry.
A common scenario for 6.4 Powerstroke owners was to find a ton of extra oil during an oil change. However, it’s not actually oil, but diesel fuel that has mixed in with the oil. In fact, it had some good, strong parts like the bed plate and some of the strongest OEM rods in any light-duty diesel engine. However, this goal wasn’t exactly realized as all models of the engine have been plagued with problems. Many of the issues with this engine can be addressed with the replacement of factory parts with 6.4 Powerstroke performance parts.
Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items. Next, the first sensor was reinstalled and plugged back in. With the hanger installed on the new mount, the first pipe was set into place. With all of the sensors loose, they were unplugged and set off to the side.

The DPF system works to decrease harmful emissions from a diesel engine, but they can get clogged, which will decrease efficiency and cause problems with the turbocharger.
Installing an oil catch can help in maintaining engine cleanliness and efficiency, preventing oil build-up that can lead to detrimental engine issues. An oil catch can is a simple yet effective device that captures and stores excess oil and moisture from the engine's crankcase gases, which otherwise could harm engine performance. If you are purposely trying to annoy your neighbors and everyone around you, then straight pipes could be for you. The problem is, straight pipes are usually obnoxious in their loudness. For these cars, it’s common to delete one or more sets of resonators and replace them with straight pipe. Any vehicle can have its muffler deleted- if it has one. Straight pipes can refer to muffler deletes, but they can also refer to removing everything in the exhaust system that isn’t pipe.

There are four sensors that plug in the catalytic converter and DPF that were removed. There are a couple of different ways to get the factory muffler off. Drop the spare tire and move the driveshaft out of the way or in our owner's case, cut the muffler off and slide the rest of the assembly over the axle and out. The exhaust is bolted/clamped together in multiple pieces. There are two hangers and one clamp that holds them on.
