Microwaves are a source of energy of great interest for chemical synthesis. Among nanomaterials, few are as versatile as silica-it forms mesoporous materials and nanoparticles, it can be incorporated as shells or loaded in composites, it can also be functionalized. Despite the relevant properties of silica, and the advantages of the use of microwave as energy source, its use in silica-based materials is not frequent. We report herein a compilation of the research results published in the last 10 years of microwave assisted synthesis of silica based materials. This review includes examples of mesoporous materials for waste removal, catalysis, drug release, and gas adsorption applications, together with examples based in the optimization of the synthesis conditions. In the case of non-porous materials, examples of analytical applications, coating of metallic nanoparticles, and SiOx-C materials have been collected. The development of osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by synovial inflammation and the upregulation of vascular cell adhesion molecule type 1 (VCAM-1) in human osteoarthritis synovial fibroblasts (OASFs). This increase in VCAM-1 expression promotes monocyte adhesion to OASFs. The adipokine resistin is known to promote the release of inflammatory cytokines during OA progression. In this study, we identified significantly higher levels of resistin and CD68 (a monocyte surface marker) expression in human OA tissue compared with in healthy control tissue. We also found that resistin enhances VCAM-1 expression in human OASFs and facilitates the adhesion of monocytes to OASFs. These effects were attenuated by inhibitors of PKCα, p38, and JNK; their respective siRNAs; and by a microRNA-381 (miR-381) mimic. In our anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) rat model of OA, the inhibition of resistin activity prevented ACLT-induced damage to the OA rat cartilage and pathological changes in resistin and monocyte expression. We also found that resistin affects VCAM-1 expression and monocyte adhesion in human OASFs by inhibiting miR-381 synthesis via the PKCα, p38, and JNK signaling pathways. Our clarification of the crucial role played by resistin in the pathogenesis of OA may lead to more effective therapy that reduces OA inflammation.During the phase of proliferation needed for hematopoietic reconstitution following transplantation, hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPC) must express genes involved in stem cell self-renewal. selleck chemicals llc We investigated the expression of genes relevant for self-renewal and expansion of HSPC (operationally defined as CD34+ cells) in steady state and after transplantation. Specifically, we evaluated the expression of ninety-one genes that were analyzed by real-time PCR in CD34+ cells isolated from (i) 12 samples from umbilical cord blood (UCB); (ii) 15 samples from bone marrow healthy donors; (iii) 13 samples from bone marrow after umbilical cord blood transplant (UCBT); and (iv) 29 samples from patients after transplantation with adult hematopoietic cells. The results show that transplanted CD34+ cells from adult cells acquire an asset very different from transplanted CD34+ cells from cord blood. Multivariate machine learning analysis (MMLA) showed that four specific gene signatures can be obtained by comparing the four types of CD34+ cells. In several, but not all cases, transplanted HSPC from UCB overexpress reprogramming genes. However, these remarkable changes do not alter the commitment to hematopoietic lineage. Overall, these results reveal undisclosed aspects of transplantation biology. The 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima was not only a health disaster, but also an information disaster. Although media can promote health communication following disasters, studies have revealed associations between media information and negative psychological reactions. To clarify the relationship between media utilization and current health anxiety due to radiation exposure, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted in Fukushima. We selected 2000 subjects from evacuation (i.e., 500) and non-evacuation (i.e., 1500) areas by two-stage stratified random sampling. As the independent variable, participants were asked about current health anxiety due to radiation exposure at the time of answering the questionnaire. For utilization of media about radiation exposure, local media, national media, Internet media, public broadcasts, and public relations information from local government were set as the dependent variables. Questionnaire data were analyzed by evacuation type (i.e., forced/voluntary). In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, the use of public relations information was significantly associated with lower anxiety for the forced evacuees (odds ratio 0.72; 95% confidence interval 0.56-0.93). Our findings highlight the importance of public relations information from local government in terms of it being associated with lower current health anxiety, and this could potentially aid in preparing for future disasters. This study aimed to evaluate levels of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) extract (YME), as a feed additive in the diets of growing lambs on serum biochemical parameters and hematological indices, animal performance, body metrics and carcass traits. Thirty-six entire (nine per treatment), male growing lambs, weighing 23.8 ± 3.7 kg, were fed the experimental diets which were treatments consisting of increasing levels of YME (0, 1, 2, and 4% inclusion on a dry matter [DM] basis) during an experimental period of 53 days. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, which initial body weight was used as blocking factor and the results were analyzed by orthogonal contrasts (linear, quadratic, and cubic). Yerba mate extract did not change the general health status of the animals; however, inclusions of up to 2% of the extract increased globulins (p = 0.05) and white blood cell count, as segmented neutrophils (p = 0.02) and lymphocytes (p = 0.04). Additionally, inclusion of up to 2% YME increased dry matter intake, final weight gain, total and daily gain (p less then 0.05), also tended to increase ribeye area and reduce fat thickness (p less then 0.10); however, YME above 2% of inclusion reduced animal productive parameters (p less then 0.05). In conclusion, levels up to 2% of YME were beneficial to the health and productive parameters of growing lambs.
