Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection mainly causes gastroduodenal diseases, including chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. In recent years, several studies have demonstrated that infection with H. pylori, especially strains harboring the virulence factor CagA (cytotoxin-associated gene A), contribute to the development of non-gastric systemic diseases, including hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. However, mechanisms underlying this association has not been defined. In this study, we carried out a large-scale genetic screen using Drosophila and identified a novel CagA target low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), which aids in the clearance of circulating LDL. We showed that CagA physically interacted with LDLR via its carboxy-terminal region and inhibited LDLR-mediated LDL uptake into cells. Since deficiency of LDLR-mediated LDL uptake has been known to increase plasma LDL and accelerate atherosclerosis, our findings may provide a novel mechanism for the association between infection with CagA-positive H. pylori and hypercholesterolemia leading to atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal disease characterized by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome and its oncogenic product, BCR-ABL, which activates multiple pathways involved in cell survival, growth promotion, and disease progression. We recently reported that signal-transducing adaptor protein 1 (STAP-1) is upregulated in CML stem cells (LSCs) and functions to reduce the apoptosis of CML LSCs by upregulating the STAT5-downstream anti-apoptotic genes. In this study, we demonstrate the detailed molecular interactions among BCR-ABL, STAP-1, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (STAT5). Studies with deletion mutants have revealed that STAP-1 interacts with BCR-ABL and STAT5a through its SH2 and PH domains, respectively, suggesting the possible role of STAP-1 as a scaffold protein. Furthermore, the binding of STAP-1 to BCR-ABL stabilizes the BCR-ABL protein in CML cells. Since STAP-1 is highly expressed in CML cells, we also analyzed the STAP-1 promoter activity using a luciferase reporter construct and found that NFATc1 is involved in activating the STAP-1 promoter and inducing STAP-1 mRNA expression. Here, we developed a convenient and efficient method to downregulate the expression of a specific gene using ∼140 nucleotide RNA with a 24-nucleotide antisense region from an arabinose-inducible expression plasmid by taking Escherichia coli lacZ and phoA genes encoding β-galactosidase and alkaline phosphatase, respectively, as target genes to evaluate the model. LAMP has been recently used to diagnose leptospirosis. Therefore, we undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the accuracy of LAMP with PCR in the diagnosis of leptospirosis. Sixty-one studies were extracted from three international databases and analyzed throughout using the PRISMA guideline. The pooled sensitivity of LAMP and PCR technique was 0.80 (95% CI 0.58-0.90) and 0.54 (95% CI 0.35-0.67) respectively indicating that LAMP is more sensitive than PCR. The Q* value of LAMP and PCR-based technique is 274.61 and 397.95, respectively. Among the analyzed studies, significant heterogeneity was observed where I2 is 90.90% for LAMP-based and 86.18% for PCR-based. Our study suggests that LAMP has better diagnostic accuracy than PCR. However, future work should be carried out to reduce heterogeneity as well as to improve and develop effective intervention strategies.

Approximately 10% of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) present with early-onset disease (EOPD), defined as diagnosis before 50 years of age. Genetic factors are known to contribute to EOPD, with most commonly observed mutations in PRKN, PINK1, and DJ1 genes. The aim of our study was to analyze the frequency of PRKN, PINK1, and DJ1 mutations in an EOPD series from 4 neighboring European countries Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine.

Diagnosis of PD was made based on UK Brain Bank diagnostic criteria in departments experienced in movement disorders (1 from Czech Republic, 1 from Germany, 9 from Poland, and 3 from Ukraine). EOPD was defined as onset at or before 50 years of age. Of the 541 patients recruited to the study, 11 were Czech, 38 German, 476 Polish, and 16 Ukrainian. All cohorts were fully screened with Sanger sequencing for PRKN, PINK1, and DJ1 and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification for exon dosage.

PRKN homozygous or double heterozygous mutations were identified in 17 patients 1 Czech (9.1%), 1 German (2.6%), 14 Polish (2.9%), and 1 Ukrainian (6.3%). PINK1 homozygous mutations were only identified in 3 Polish patients (0.6%). There were no homozygous or compound heterozygous DJ1 mutations in analyzed subpopulations. One novel variant in PRKN was identified in the Ukrainian series.

Fourteen heterogeneous studies were identified reporting both qualitative and quantitative data on over 1700 individuals. The most commonly reported symptoms related to bowel changes. The most problematic changes were bowel and sexual dysfunction. Quality of life was most affected by an inability to function as individuals desired, specifically in their chosen role and socially. Quality of life improved as time progressed or symptoms resolved; but symptoms could persist for many years.

However, the limitation to study the cross-interactions masks the collaborative role of organisms within ecosystem. Beneficial microbes are most prominent organisms that are needed to be studied due to their bidirectional nature towards plants. Fascinatingly, Plant-Parasitic Nematodes (PPNs) have been profoundly observed to cause mass destruction of agricultural crops worldwide. The huge demand for agriculture for present-day population requires optimization of production potential by curbing the damage caused by PPNs. Chemical nematicides combats their proliferation, but their extended usage has abruptly affected flora, fauna and human populations. Because of consistent pressing issues in regard to environment, the use of biocontroled systemic channels. Suicide is a leading preventable cause of mortality worldwide. Suicide rates in Lebanon are unknown, as reported numbers are extrapolated and modeled over neighboring countries with poor quality of vital registration data.

Numbers of death by suicide were obtained from the Internal Security Forces records from January 2008 through December 2018. Records from 2011 through 2018 specified the gender of the individual, the means of the suicide, the date and place of suicide. As of March 2014, nationality of the individual was recorded.

The total recorded number of completed suicides over 11 years is 1366 with an annual rate ranging between 1.87 and 2.4 per 100,000 capita. The male to female ratio was 21. Death by firearms (41.4 %) was the most common means used, followed by hanging (26.5 %), jumping from a height (13.6 %), and poisoning (13.5 %). Males were more likely to use firearms while females were more likely to use hanging or jumping from a height (p < 0.001), the latter being a common finding in non-Lebanese nationals (Ethiopian).
