To determine its significance in epilepsy-associated inflammation and response to antiepileptic drug (AED), we evaluated the plasma PGE2 (median, pg/ml) levels in drug-free patients with epilepsy (N = 34) and patients receiving AED monotherapy (N = 55) in addition to that in healthy controls (N = 34). When compared to controls, plasma PGE2 levels were significantly elevated in all drug-free patients independent of the type of epilepsy (137.2 versus 475.7 pg/ml, p  less then  0.0001). Among the patients receiving AED monotherapy, only valproate responders showed a significant decrease compared to both drug-free patients (232.1 versus 475.7 pg/ml, p  less then  0.01) as well as valproate non-responders (232.1 versus 611.9 pg/ml, p  less then  0.0001). Both responders and non-responders on phenytoin or carbamazepine monotherapy had elevated PGE2 levels similar to drug-free patients. In addition, no difference was observed in plasma profiles of PGE2 precursor, arachidonic acid among the groups. Our work presents the clinical evidence of the association between plasma PGE2 levels and valproate efficacy in patients with epilepsy. The administration of iron induces liver oxidative stress and depletion of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs), n-6/n-3 LCPUFA ratio enhancement and fat accumulation, which may be prevented by antioxidant-rich extra virgin olive oil (AR-EVOO) supplementation. Male Wistar rats were subjected to a control diet (50 mg iron/kg diet) or iron-rich diet (IRD; 200 mg/kg diet) with alternate AR-EVOO for 21 days. Liver fatty acid (FA) analysis was performed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) after lipid extraction and fractionation, besides Δ-5 desaturase (Δ-5 D) and Δ6-D mRNA expression (qPCR) and activity (GLC) measurements. The IRD significantly (p  less then  0.05) increased hepatic total fat, triacylglycerols, free FA contents and serum transaminases levels, with diminution in those of n-6 and n-3 LCPUFAs, higher n-6/n-3 ratios, lower unsaturation index and Δ5-D and Δ6-D activities, whereas the mRNA expression of both desaturases was enhanced over control values, changes that were prevented by concomitant AR-EVOO supplementation. N-6 and n-3 LCPUFAs were also decreased by IRD in extrahepatic tissues and normalized by AR-EVOO. In conclusion, AR-EVOO supplementation prevents IRD-induced changes in parameters related to liver FA metabolism and steatosis, an effect that may have a significant impact in the treatment of iron-related pathologies or metabolic disorders such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The purpose of this pilot study was to explore how best to prepare and support nursing undergraduate students learning in a community/primary care setting through a Student Managed Initiatives in Lifestyle Education (SMILE) project. Further to this our intention was to evaluate the ways in which students were able to apply nursing theory to the practice of identifying and responding to the health needs of vulnerable people. Using a collaborative approach and a qualitative method, this pilot study used focus group discussions to explore both the experiences of community participants and undergraduate nursing students. This project found that students were able to draw on theoretical understandings and their simulated learning experiences to support their learning in a complex, non-clinical practice setting. It also illustrates the way in which community centres and other naturalistic environments where individuals and groups meet, can provide spontaneous and rewarding opportunities for nursing students to develop and apply health promoting knowledge and skills. Shaping nursing curricula with this in mind, creates the potential for nurses to make a significant contribution to improved health outcomes for vulnerable and/or marginalised people. Migration of radionuclides via colloid-facilitated transport is an important component of nuclear repository performance models. 137Cs sorption to bentonite colloids follows multi-site behavior, with sorption to weak sites being a rapid process and sorption to strong sites having slow kinetics. Experiments in this study targeted desorption of 137Cs from strong sites on the colloids by placing the 137Cs-bearing colloids in contact with a strongly-sorbing zeolite material that competes with the colloids for 137Cs sorption. Batch and column experiments were conducted to examine the effects of aging (i.e., increased contact time between 137Cs and colloids) on colloid-facilitated transport of 137Cs through crushed analcime columns. A larger proportion of 137Cs-bearing colloids eluted through a series of columns when the colloids were aged for 1200 days prior to injection in comparison to unaged colloids. Aging the colloids increased the partitioning of 137Cs to the colloids by nearly 20% after 1200 h. Slow desorption (0.27 hr-1) from the strong sites resulted in an increase of the Cs fraction bound to the strong sites from 0.365 to 0.87 by the second column injection, resulting in increased colloid-facilitated transport of Cs through strongly-sorbing zeolites from 0 in the second unaged column to 10% in the second aged column. HYPOTHESIS This paper investigates the self-assembly behavior of a new amphiphilic block copolymer, PPEGMA-PPC-PPEGMA, in dilute aqueous solution and at the air-water interface. In PPEGMA-PPC-PPEGMA, the hydrophilic PEG moieties exist as side chains attached to the PMA backbone. Because of this unique non-linear architecture, the morphological and conformational properties of self-assembled PPEGMA-PPC-PPEGMA polymers are expected to be different from those of conventional linear PEG-based polymer surfactants.
