Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are rare diseases that cause acute destruction of the epithelium of the skin and mucous membranes, almost always attributable to drugs. However, warfarin-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis is extremely rare. We report the case of 71-year-old woman who died due to destructive erosion all over her skin and mucous membranes. She had received a mitral valve prosthesis, and warfarin was prescribed for antithrombotic therapy. A lymphocyte transformation test for drug hypersensitivity and the clinical history confirmed this phenomenon as warfarin-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis.Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates are abundantly used endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of single and combined exposures to BPA and/or di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in prenatal and lactational period on rat male reproductive system in later stages of life. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly to four groups (n = 3/group) Control (corn oil); DEHP (30 mg/kg/day); BPA (50 mg/kg/day); and BPA+ DEHP (30 mg/kg/day DEHP and 50 mg/kg/day BPA). Groups exposed to EDCs through 6-21 gestational days and lactation period by intragastric lavage. Male offspring (n = 6/group) from each mother were fed till adulthood and were then euthanized. Later, reproductive hormones, sperm parameters, and oxidative stress parameters were determined. In conclusion, we can suggest that prenatal and lactational exposure to BPA and DEHP may cause adverse effects in male reproductive system in later stages of life especially after combined exposure.Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant threat to human health because of the lack of awareness of physical examination or the limitations of an early diagnostic level. Despite the improving standard of modern medicine, mortality from CRC is still remarkably high and the prognosis remains poor in many cases because of disease detection at advanced clinical stages. Raman spectroscopy yields precise information, not only regarding the secondary structure of proteins but also regarding the discrimination between normal and malignant tissues. We investigated whether this method can be used for the diagnosis of CRC including initial stages. We intended to explore the role of PTEN and microsatellite (MS) in GC, showing their potential as prognostic markers. Primary gastric cancer tissues, adjacent normal tissues, and clinicopathological parameters of 187 patients were collected. The expression level of PTEN and MS status were classified by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The relationship among indicators was compared by the chi-square test. The survival curves were delineated by Kaplan-Meier and tested by Log-rank methods. The impact of multiple factors on prognosis was determined by COX proportional hazards model. Significantly, PTEN expression was associated with lymphatic invasion (p=0.011) and Lauren grade (p=0.015). Other than conservative surgery (CS), neoadjuvant or adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) is recommended when the risk of local recurrence is high. The aim of this study is to present our Institutional experience in adjuvant RT for treatment of STS of extremities and trunk (with either brachytherapy (BRT), external beam RT (EBRT), or both) and to provide an insight of toxicity and oncological outcomes for each RT modality. According to the RT treatment approach, patients were divided into three categories 1) BRT alone; 2) EBRT alone; 3) combined BRT+EBRT. Differences among the three groups were assessed by the Chi-squared test. Patients' follow-up was performed every 6 months for the first two years after the end of RT and then once a year. Data from 90 patients were analyzed. The overall 3-year distant relapse-free survival (DRFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were 84%, 80%, and 97%, respectively. Acute erythema was the most frequent side effect, although severe grade 3 toxicity was present in 5 patients. Chronic toxicity of any grade was reported in 14 patients. The incidence of chronic toxicity did not show any association with treatment modality. Multivariate analysis suggested a significant correlation between acute toxicity and tumor size, RT modality, and RT dose. In conclusion, good local control and toxicity profile were observed, despite negative patients' selection at baseline. The contrast-enhanced T1-weighted sequences from baseline MRI examinations of OPSCC patients treated between 2008 and 2016 were retrospectively selected. Radiomic features were extracted using the IBEX software, and hiegrarchical clustering was applied to reduce features redundancy. The association of each radiomic feature with tumor grading and stage, HPV status, loco-regional recurrence within 2 years, considered as main endpoints, was assessed by univariate analysis and then corrected for multiple testing. The expression of lamin B1 was connected with the clinical stage, depth of invasion, and poorer overall survival. Colony formation assays and methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) were used to assess cell viability. The migration ability of GC cells was determined by cell scratch assay and Transwell invasion assay. Moreover, we used two cell lines of GC to explore the underlying mechanism of lamin B1 in boosting the GC cells proliferation and invasion in vitro by assessing the effects on related signal transduction pathways. Our data demonstrated that the expression level of lamin B1 was downregulated in GC tissues, and low expression level of lamin B1 was significantly correlated with higher clinical stage, depth of invasion, nodal stage, and poor prognosis. Moreover, in vitro experiments demonstrated that lamin B1 knockdown promoted, whereas lamin B1 overexpression inhibited, gastric cancer cell proliferation and migration. We also observed that lamin B1 knockdown could promote the activity of the PI3K/PTEN/Akt and MAPK/ERK pathway with a decrease in the p53/p21WAF1/CIP1 expression, whereas lamin B1 overexpression contributed to the opposite results. In conclusion, our studies indicate that lamin B1 deficiency is crucial in GC progression. Long non-coding RNA cancer susceptibility candidate 2 (CASC2) is related to the chemoresistance of diverse tumors. At present, the resistance of OSCC to first-line chemotherapy drug cisplatin (DDP) is still a giant problem. Herein, we investigated the role and mechanism of CASC2 in OSCC resistance to DDP. Expression levels of CASC2, miR-31-5p, and KANK1 in OSCC tissues and cells were determined by qRT-PCR. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of DDP-resistant OSCC cells and apoptosis of DDP-resistant OSCC cells were determined via CCK-8 or flow cytometry assays. The relationship between CASC2 or KANK1 and miR-31-5p was verified with a dual-luciferase reporter or RIP assays. The role of CASC2 in vivo was confirmed by xenograft experiments. We observed that CASC2A and KANK1 were downregulated while miR-31-5p was upregulated in DDP-resistant OSCC tissues and cells (p less then 0.05). CASC2 overexpression enhanced cell DDP sensitivity and accelerated cell apoptosis in DDP-resistant OSCC cells in vivo and in vitro (p less then 0.05). Notably, KANK1 acted as a target for miR-31-5p. Also, CASC2 modulated KANK1 expression via sponging miR-31-5p in DDP-resistant OSCC cells (p less then 0.05). Both CASC2 and KANK1 introduction-mediated impacts on the DDP sensitivity and apoptosis of DDP-resistant OSCC cells were restored by miR-31-5p elevation (p less then 0.05). To conclude, CASC2 boosted the DDP sensitivity and apoptosis of DDP-resistant OSCC cells by upregulating KANK1 via sponging miR-31-5p, and CASC2 might be a potential target for DDP-resistant OSCC treatment.Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health concern of zoonotic importance, and Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis are the most common causes of TB in animals and humans, respectively. Integral to TB control strategies are the communities affected by this epidemic. Tuberculosis awareness by the community is an effective TB control strategy as education empowers people to make informed choices with regard to mitigating TB risk factors in their daily lives. We conducted a knowledge, attitude and perceptions survey in Mnisi pastoral community in South Africa using a semi-structured questionnaire to evaluate the level of bovine TB (bTB) awareness, and provided informed feedback to the community on the outcome of the study. Although participants were aware of TB, the knowledge of the zoonotic potential of bTB and about susceptible hosts was limited. The study findings showed knowledge gaps regarding common risk factors, including coughing while herding cattle, unsupervised/uninspected communal slaughter and improper disposal of infected meat.
