This study used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) to determine the differences in the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer (PCa) between China and the USA from 1990 to 2019.

The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized death rates (ASDRs) in China and the USA from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from GBD 2019. Annual percentage changes and relative risks of ASIR and ASDR were calculated using joinpoint regression analysis and age-period-cohort models, respectively.

The ASIR of PCa in China continually increased from 1990 to 2019, while in the USA it increased from 1990 to 1994 and then continually decreased until 2015, and then slightly increased again until 2019. The ASDR in China did not change, and the trend of ASDR in the USA was similar to the trend of the ASIR in the USA. The incidence of PCa increased with age in China, but decreased after the age of 75 years in the USA. A period effect was present, with the risk of developing PCa increasing continuously over longer time periods. Those born later had a lower risk of PCa or death, indicating a cohort effect.

PCa is becoming more problematic for Chinese males. Disease trends in the USA indicate that large-scale screening may be beneficial and should be immediately implemented among high-risk groups in China.

It took less then 2 days to make a microbiological diagnosis using the Oxford Nanopore Technologies' MinION device, compared to 20 days for the mycobacterium to be isolated from the tissue biopsy. NGS is particularly useful for culture-negative and slow-growing microorganism infections, such as mycobacterial, fungal and partially treated pyogenic bacterial infections. We evaluated the performance of four commercially available tests, i.e. two lateral flow assays (Coris BioConcept COVID-19 Sero NP/RBD and Concile InfectCheck COVID-19 NAb) and two surrogate ELISA (sELISA) tests (EUROIMMUN SARS-CoV-2 NeutraLISA and AdipoGen SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibodies Detection Kit) in comparison with an in-house SARS-CoV-2 micro neutralization test as reference. A total of 334 sera were tested, including 30 samples collected prior to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, 128 sera from convalescent patients as well as 176 sera from partially or fully vaccinated individuals. The overall sensitivity of LFAs differed and was 71.6% for the Coris and 98.4% for the Concile. In contrast, overall sensitivity of the NeutraLISA was 86 and 98% for the AdipoGen. All test showed the highest sensitivity when testing samples from fully vaccinated individuals with both sELISA achieving 100% sensitivity. Overall specificity was 89.3% for the Coris and only 58.3% for the Concile. Similarly, significant differences were observed for both sELISA, with an overall specificity of 82.1% for the NeutraLISA and only 54.8% for the AdipoGen. All tests showed a 100% specificity when testing negative control samples while specificities were lowest when testing samples from only partially vaccinated individuals.

The COVID-19 pandemic has major implications on kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) since they show increased mortality due to impaired immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and a reduced efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Surprisingly, dialysis patients have shown superior seroconversion rates after vaccination compared to KTRs. Therefore, we investigated peripheral blood B cell (BC) composition before and after kidney transplantation (KT) and aimed to screen the BC compartment to explain impaired antibody generation.

A total of 105 patients were recruited, and multicolor flow cytometric phenotyping of peripheral venous blood BC subpopulations was performed before and 1 year after KT. Complete follow-up was available for 71 individuals. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were collected retrospectively and were available for 40 subjects, who had received two doses of an mRNA-based vaccine (BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273).

Overall, relative BC frequencies within lymphocytes decreased, and their absolute counts trendet for the low serological response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in KTRs compared to dialysis patients. Our findings need confirmation in further studies as they may guide vaccination strategies.

Patients with IPF often suffer from a lethal complication, acute exacerbation (AE), a significant part of which is assumed to be triggered by respiratory viral infection. However, whether mild to moderate COVID-19 can trigger AE in patients with IPF remains unknown. This is the case report of a 60-year-old man with a 4-year history of IPF who successfully recovered from moderate COVID-19 but subsequently developed more severe respiratory failure, which was considered to be a COVID-19-triggered acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (AE-IPF). It is important to be aware of the risk of AE-IPF after COVID-19 and to properly manage this deadly complication of IPF. Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 is also associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, but the mechanisms remain unclear. As a blood-borne and sexually transmitted infection (STI), HTLV-1 shares transmission routes to many other pathogens and although it has worldwide distribution, it affects mainly those in low- and middle-income tropical areas, where the prevalence of other infectious agents is high. These factors contribute to a high incidence of co-infections in people living with HTLV-1 (PLHTLV). This comprehensive review addresses the impact of HTLV-1 on several co-infections and vice-versa. There is evidence of higher rates of HTLV-1 infection in assmpact the clinical course of hepatitis C. Co-infections may also influence the risk of developing HTLV-1 associated disease, but data are still limited. The impact of HTLV-1 on the response to more common infections, might contribute to the increased mortality rate of HTLV-1. Large scale prospective controlled studies on the prevalence and impact of HTLV-1 in co-infections and vice-versa are needed. Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 impact in public health is broad. Two independent investigators performed abstracted and title screening, assessed the full text and quality of evidence. This umbrella review included systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Eligible reviews aim to evaluate the effect of exercise on patient-important sarcopenic outcomes (muscle or physical function, mortality, and quality of life) in treating sarcopenia in older people.
