Some soil microorganisms can mobilize unavailable phosphorus (P) in soils for plant use and increase P fertilizer efficiency. Thus, an abiotic P solubilization experiment and fungal incubation in solution and soil were conducted to investigate the mobilization of various P compounds by a new white-rot fungus Ceriporia lacerata HG2011. The crop agronomic performances were then evaluated in the winter barley-summer maize-winter wheat rotation field.

Ceriporia lacerata HG2011 had a wide P mobilization spectrum and mobilized P by different mechanisms depending on P sources supplied in liquid culture. The chief mechanism employed by this fungus was the production of protons in mobilizing Ca

(PO

)

, low-molecular-weight organic acids and other unknown substances in FePO

and AlPO

, phytase (an inducible enzyme in the presence of phytate) in phytate, and phosphatase in lecithin and ribonucleic acid, respectively. As a result of the large fungal biomass, P accumulated in the hypha should also be considered in the assessment of the fungal P mobilization, and not just only soluble inorganic P. As C. lacerata HG2011 colonized on and in the test soil, phosphatase and phytase activities were enhanced but pH decreased in the soil, leading to P mobilization. The application of this fungus mobilized soil P, increased crop P uptake and yields, and consecutively reduced P fertilizer use without yield sacrifices in the multiple crop rotation field.

However, serious self-heating inevitably occurs inside high-power CPETs, severely limiting their practical applications in broader fields. To tackle this, multidirectional heat-escape channels of multidimensional (multi-D, 3D/2D) graphene films are introduced in designing new-type thermal regulators. A porous AlN-ceramic thermal-sink is creatively selected as a template for directly synthesizing graphene via a two-step chemical vapor deposition strategy. This perfect combination of 3D/2D-graphene and the AlN ceramic can integrate their complementary advantages in uniformizing, transmitting, and releasing heat. Amazingly, in the new-generation CPETs embedded with these graphene-based thermal regulators, the self-heating-induced temperature rise can be substantially reduced by ≈60% (far exceeding actual demand standard). As another kernel parameter, electroacoustic-energy-conversion efficiency is dramatically improved in the new-generation CPETs. Briefly, this research realizes the first synthesis of a novel multi-D-graphene/AlN-ceramic hybrid, and propels its brand-new application directions in new-generation energy-conversion- and thermal-management-related territories.

As life expectancy improves for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), new symptoms are likely to arise. This aims of this study are (1) to explore the prevalence of a broad variety of symptoms in the various stages of DMD (with and without steroid use); (2) to explore the prevalence of common secondary diagnoses; and (3) to evaluate the social participation level of patients with DMD older than 16 y of age; and to explore correlations between social participation and symptoms.

A cross-sectional self-report questionnaire, including questions on functional level and health status, as well as a standardized participation scale was distributed among Dutch patients with DMD.

Eighty-four male patients with a mean age of 22.0 (SD=10.0) y were enrolled. The most prevalent and limiting symptoms were difficulty coughing (58%), coldness of hands (57%), contractures (51%), stiffness (49%), fatigue (40%), myalgia (38%), and low speech volume (33%). Prevalent secondary diagnoses included cardiac disease (14%), neurobehavioral diagnosis (13%), low blood pressure (13%), and arthrosis (5%). Social participation correlated negatively with coldness of hands (r=- .29; P < .03), decreased intelligibility (r=- .40; P < .003), and chewing problems (r=- .33; P < .02).

The prevalence of a broad spectrum of symptoms and secondary diagnoses is high in patients with DMD, and some of these symptoms are correlated with social participation. Growing awareness of new symptoms and secondary diagnoses among patients, caregivers, and professionals can enhance their recognition, possibly facilitating prevention and early treatment.

The substitution or mislabeling of toothfish is an issue of significant concern for seafood authorities; it also reduces the effectiveness of marine conservation and management programs for its over-exploitation and illegal trafficking, boosting the need for identification methods.

Two species-specific real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for the identification of Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) and Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) and a genus-specific real-time PCR assay for Dissostichus spp. identification were developed based on fragments of the 16S rRNA and COI (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) genes. These methods were confirmed to be rapid, simple, and sensitive (absolute sensitivity of 0.0002 ng μL

and relative sensitivity of 0.1g kg

with good specificity). These methods can be applied to processed and commercial fish products.

These approaches can be beneficial for protecting both consumers and producers from economic fraud and might also help protect toothfish from over-exploitation as well as combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fisheries. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

The market demand for these products is continuing to increase owing to more people choosing to reduce or eliminate meat and dairy products from their diet for health, environmental sustainability, and/or ethical reasons. This review investigates the current status of dairy product alternatives. Legume proteins have good technological properties and are cheap, which gives them a strong commercial potential to be used in plant-based cheese-like products. However, few legume proteins have been explored in the formulation, development, and manufacture of a fully dairy-free cheese because of their undesirable properties heat stable anti-nutritional factors and a beany flavor. These can be alleviated by novel or traditional and economical techniques. The improvement and diversification of the formulation of legume-based cheese alternatives is strongly suggested as a low-cost step towards more sustainable food chains. © 2021 The Authors. In particular, neurogenerative disorder is a common problem of anesthesia-related drugs. Cyclopamine A patient gets anesthesia as a requirement of the preoperative evaluation to diagnose the medical illness, which is caused by anesthetic drug treatment. Different blood-based biomarkers help in identifying the changes appearing in patients after anesthesia treatment. Among them, tau protein is a sensitive biomarker of neurodegenerative diseases, and the fluctuations in tau proteins are highly associated with various diseases. Furthermore, researchers have found unstable levels of tau protein after the anesthesia process. The current research has focused on quantifying tau protein via impedance spectroscopy to identify the problems caused by anesthesia-related drugs. An impedance spectroscopy electrode was modified into a multiwalled carbon nanotube, and an amine-ended aptamer was then attached. This electrode surface was used to quantify the tau protein level and reached the detection limit of 1 fM. The determination coefficient was found to be y = 369.93x + 1144.9, with R2 = 0.9846 in the linear range of 1 fM-1 nM. Furthermore, tau protein spiked human serum was clearly identified on the immobilized aptamer surface, indicating the specific detection.

Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) microwave breast cancer detection is a promising new technology for routine physical examination and home monitoring. The existing microwave imaging algorithms for breast tumor detection are complex and the effect is still not ideal, due to the heterogeneity of breast tissue, skin reflection, and fibroglandular tissue reflection in backscatter signals. This study aims to develop a machine learning method to accurately locate breast tumor.

A microwave-based breast tumor localization method is proposed by time-frequency feature extraction and neural network technology. First, the received microwave array signals are converted into representative and compact features by 4-level Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Then, the Genetic Algorithm-Neural Network (GA-NN) is developed to tune hyper-parameters of the neural network adaptively. The neural network embedded in the GA-NN algorithm is a four-layer architecture and 10-fold cross-validation is perforst tumor localization. The traditional microwave-based breast cancer detection method is to reconstruct the entire breast image to highlight the tumor. Compared with the traditional method, our proposed method can directly get the breast tumor location by applying neural network to the received microwave array signals, and circumvent any complicated image reconstruction processing.
