The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic to hospitals in New York City stressed our emergency departments (ED) with high patient volume, stresses on hospital resources and the arrival of numerous high acuity, critically ill patients. Amid this time, we sought to leverage the ED Information Systems (EDIS), to assist in connecting critically ill patients, their families, and providers in the ED with palliative care resources. We discuss 4 innovative, thoughtful solutions to assist ED providers in identifying and addressing the acute and unique palliative care needs of COVID patients.The effect of malnutrition on outcomes after carotid artery stenting (CAS) is not well known. This study reports the relationship between malnutrition and post-procedure 30-day major adverse events (MAEs). A total of 978 patients hospitalized for CAS were enrolled in the study. Controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, the nutritional risk index (NRI), and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were calculated. MAEs (myocardial infarction, stroke/transient ischemic attack and mortality) were compared. According to the CONUT score, NRI, and PNI, 9.4%, 41%, and 11.4% patients were moderately or severely malnourished, respectively; 74.8% were at least mildly malnourished by at least 1 score. Forty-seven patients (4.8%) had a post-procedure 30-day MAE. Continuous classifications of the indexes were independently associated with higher MAE. CONUT showed the highest predictive ability, whereas NRI had the lowest (C-index CONUT, 0.701; NRI, 0.681; PNI, 0.688). According to categorical classification of indexes, only CONUT and PNI showed predictive ability for MAE. Malnutrition assessment could identify patients with CAS at elevated risk for MAE. CONUT, NRI, and PNI continuous scores were independent prognostic factors for the post-procedure 30-day MAE. According to our study, CONUT showed the highest predictive ability.

Accuracy is reported as per recently adopted FDA guidance for BGM systems, EN ISO 151972015 and MARD/MAD (Mean absolute relative difference/Mean absolute difference).

Thirty-three individual test-strip batches were evaluated corresponding to 506 unique donors. Accuracy performance - FDA 98.9% of values within ±15% of comparator; ISO 99.0% within ±15 mg/dL or ±15% at <100 mg/dL (<5.55 mmol/L) or ≥100 mg/dL (≥5.55 mmol/L) glucose, respectively. Overall MARD was 4.19% with a MARD range of 3.54%-5.73% across all test strip batches.

To reduce the risk of adverse effects associated with live vaccines, a recombinant vaccine expressing PH-1 domain of viral glycoprotein B was constructed using the pET expression system under isopropylthiogalactoside (IPTG) induction. The potential immunogenicity of recombinant PH-1 (rPH-1) was evaluated in chickens. Eight-week-old specific-pathogen-free chickens were intramuscularly administered two doses of rPH-1, 25 and 50 μg, alone or with a combination of ISA70 adjuvant. The humoral immune responses were determined up to 3 months postvaccination at 2 weeks apart. The T cell proliferation response was determined on day 28 after primary immunization. The vaccinated birds with rPH-1/ISA70 developed higher and constant-specific anti-ILTV enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibodies than in those vaccinated with rPH-1 alone. Tetrazolium Red Coinjection of rPH-1 and adjuvant significantly (p  less then  0.01) increased the T cell proliferation responses. There were no significant differences in eliciting the immune responses in chickens immunized with the higher dose of the antigen than that with the lower dose. U = U messaging intends to destigmatize HIV by demonstrating that PWH can have healthy sexual lives. Among a sample of low-income heterosexually active Black and Latino adults, we aimed to (1) measure the prevalence of U = U awareness and (2) determine its association with anticipated HIV stigma. Low-income heterosexually active adults were recruited through respondent-driven sampling in New York City. Among Black and Latino participants who self-reported not having HIV, multiple linear regression was used to determine the association between U = U awareness with the following types of anticipated HIV stigma, as determined by principal component analyses (1) general; (2) dating related; and (3) sex related. Of 485 participants, 35% were aware of U = U. Those who were aware reported less dating-related [adjusted B -0.20; 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.37 to -0.03] and sex-related (adjusted B -0.15; 95% CI -0.29 to -0.002) anticipated HIV stigma. Although the prevalence of U = U awareness was much lower than reported in other populations (e.g., gender and sexual minorities and PWH), prevalence was moderate in our sample, given that awareness efforts have generally not focused on heterosexually active adults. Our findings provide preliminary evidence that U = U awareness may have an impact on anticipated HIV stigma related to dating and sex. Additional methods to disseminate U = U messaging and dismantle HIV stigma in this population should be explored.Three tick species that can transmit pathogen causing disease are commonly found parasitizing people and animals in the mid-Atlantic United States the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say), the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis [Say]), and the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum [L.]) (Acari Ixodidae). The potential risk of pathogen transmission from tick bites acquired at schools in tick-endemic areas is a concern, as school-aged children are a high-risk group for tick-borne disease. Integrated pest management (IPM) is often required in school districts, and continued tick range expansion and population growth will likely necessitate IPM strategies to manage ticks on school grounds. However, an often-overlooked step of tick management is monitoring and assessment of local tick species assemblages to inform the selection of control methodologies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate tick species presence, abundance, and distribution and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in both questing ticks and those removed from rodent hosts on six school properties in Maryland. Overall, there was extensive heterogeneity in tick species dominance, abundance, and evenness across the field sites. A. americanum and I. scapularis were found on all sites in all years. Overall, A. americanum was the dominant tick species. D. variabilis was collected in limited numbers. The impact of tick diversity on IPM of ticks is discussed.The study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of pomegranate (Punica granatum) seed oil in wound healing in excised rats. Sixteen female young Wistar Albino Rats weighing approximately 300 to 320 g were randomly divided into 2 groups as the treatment (=pomegranate seed oil group) and control groups in this experiment. Six different wounds 1 cm apart from the midline and each other were formed with a 6 mm punch biopsy instrument. Three wounds were left open (open wound group) whereas 3 wounds were sutured with 4/0 vicryl (closed wound group). Punica granatum seed oil treatment was administered topically to the treatment group, both to open and closed wounds, once a day for 14 days. Parameters for healing were evaluated. Histopathologic examination was performed for the investigation of inflammation, neovascularization, granulation, and fibroblast generation in addition to serologic (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) evaluation of rat malondialchehyche, rat glutathione peroxidase, and rat superoxide dismutase. The pumpkin, Cucurbita maxima, is widely consumed in Chile. Pumpkin seeds, despite having crude protein, lipids, and carbohydrates, are regarded as agro-industrial waste. In this work, we correlated the antiplatelet activity of aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts from pumpkin seeds with their bioactive compounds. In vitro platelet aggregation and activation studies were performed by turbidimetry and flow cytometry, respectively. Results reveal that the extracts inhibited, in a dose-dependent manner, platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate, thrombin receptor activator peptide 6 (TRAP-6), and collagen. Pumpkin seed extracts inhibited P-selectin secretion and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa activation on TRAP-6-activated platelets. They were found to be rich in fatty acids and a powerful source of plant-based protein, which could be related to the high antiplatelet potential identified in extracts.
