 Preterm birth (PTB, birth before 37 gestational weeks) is the leading cause of neonatal death and a major challenge for obstetric and neonatal care. About two-thirds of PTBs are spontaneous PTB (sPTB), of which approximately 30% start with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). To assess the variability in wavefront aberrations with short-term wear of photochromic senofilcon A contact lenses in both its activated and inactive states.

In this cross-sectional study, 20 participants who had previously used soft contact lenses were enrolled. Corneal aberrometry measurements were performed on each subject, without contact lenses, using Sirius Scheimpflug-Placido topography. The photochromic lenses were illuminated using a blue-violet light (



 = 420 nm) so as to provoke an activated state, and measurements were taken with the lenses inserted, in both states. The root mean square (RMS) of the aberrations was calculated, and the higher- and lower-order aberrations, astigmatism, coma, spherical aberration, and trefoil measurements were evaluated using a 5.0-mm pupil diameter.

The average contact lens sphere power was - 2.33 ± 1.07 D. The mean refractive errors with contact lens wear were 0.07 ± 0.18 D for the sphere and - 0.26 ± 0.15 D for the cylinder. The mean RMS values for all the corneal aberrations showed no statistically significant differences with and without contact lenses (p > 0.05). In a bivariate correlation analysis, there was a positive correlation between contact lens sphere power and coma (vertical and horizontal) in the activated state (r = 0.455, p = 0.44 and r = 0.495, p = 0.27, respectively).

The photochromic contact lenses did not influence ocular aberration during short-term wear, even when the photochromatic additive was activated. This property may help to provide more comfortable vision with lens wear. This finding needs to be verified by further studies.

Among various components of OOC systems, biomimetic membranes have been regarded as one of the most important key components to develop controllable biomimetic bioanalysis systems. Here, we review the preparation and characterization of biomimetic membranes in comparison with the features of the extracellular matrix. After that, we review and discuss the latest applications of engineered biomimetic membranes to fabricate various organs on a chip, such as liver, kidney, intestine, lung, skin, heart, vasculature and blood vessels, brain, and multiorgans with perspectives for further biomedical applications.The periocular area is one of the first and most noticeable areas affected by ageing. Common signs of lower lid ageing include rhytids, prominent eye bags caused by prolapse of orbital fat pads, increased lid laxity leading to lid malpositioning, and deepening of tear troughs, all of which give a sunken aged appearance. Lower lid transcutaneous blepharoplasty can correct most of these problems providing excellent long-term aesthetic outcomes with minimal downtime for the patient. However, lower eyelid anatomy is complex, and a thorough understanding of its structure and function is needed to avoid serious complications such as lid malpositioning and blindness. In this review, we present the anatomy of the lower lid and useful surgical techniques to circumvent and avoid such complications.We report a case series of four patients diagnosed with COVID-19-associated secondary sclerosing cholangitis (SSC), a recently described rare late complication of severe COVID-19. Following prolonged stays in the intensive care unit, these patients developed marked sustained cholestasis and jaundice despite clinical improvement. Cholangiography showed beaded appearance of intra-hepatic bile ducts and bile casts were removed in one patient. None of the patients reached normalization of liver enzymes and at least one progressed to liver cirrhosis (follow-up time of 11 to 16 months). COVID-19-associated SSC has a dismal prognosis with rapid progression to advanced chronic liver disease.

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices continuously sense and relay glucose concentration data from the interstitial fluid to a mobile phone or receiver. Older adults benefit from this continuous monitoring of glucose levels. Proper deployment of the sensing wire is facilitated by a specialized applicator.

Our aim was to assess a new seventh-generation (G7) CGM device (Dexcom, Inc) for use by adults 65 years of age or older and certified diabetes care and education specialists (CDCESs). Ease of use related to intradermal insertion and mobile app setup will be assessed and compared to the fifth- and sixth-generation systems.

Formal task analysis was conducted to enumerate the number and complexity of tasks associated with CGM deployment. We recruited 10 older adults with no prior CGM experience and 10 CDCESs to assess ease of use through hands-on insertion and initiation of a G7 system followed by a survey and, for older adults, a system usability scale survey.

About half as many tasks are needed to deploy G7 compared to G6. Older adults and CDCESs reported overall high usability of the G7 CGM device. CDCESs noted G7's easier setup compared to previous generations. The system usability scale score for the CGM system was 92.8, which reflects excellent usability.

For CDCESs and for older adults using the G7 CGM system, cognitive burden is relatively low and reduced compared to previous CGM systems. Easing of this burden and simplification of the glucose monitoring aspect of proper diabetes management will likely contribute to improved outcomes in this population.

We report a case of incomplete HIV-1 suppression on a dolutegravir, lamivudine, and abacavir single-tablet regimen with the emergence of the H51Y and G118R integrase resistance mutations.

Integrase sequencing was performed retrospectively by Sanger and next-generation sequencing. Rates of emergence and decline of resistance mutations were calculated using next-generation sequencing data. Dolutegravir plasma concentrations were measured by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The effects of H51Y and G118R on infectivity, fitness, and susceptibility to dolutegravir were quantified using cell-based assays.

During periods of non-adherence to treatment, mutations were retrospectively documented only by next-generation sequencing. Misdiagnosis by Sanger sequencing was caused by the rapid decline of mutant strains within the retroviral population. This observation was also true for a M184V lamivudine-resistant reverse transcriptase mutation found in association with integrase mutatirological suppression with dolutegravir.

Mycobacterium abscessus is an opportunistic respiratory pathogen in patients with underlying lung disease. It is infamously known for its low treatment success rates because of its resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics. Further insight into M. abscessus resistance mechanisms is needed to improve treatment options. In this in vitro study, the role of efflux pumps in reaction to antibiotic stress is explored, as well as the ability of the putative efflux inhibitors, thioridazine and verapamil, to potentiate the activity of guideline-recommended antibiotics.

To evaluate the effects of antibiotic stress on mycobacterial efflux pumps, M. abscessus subspecies abscessus was exposed to amikacin, cefoxitin, clarithromycin, clofazimine, and tigecycline for 24 hours. However, hesperidin-supplemented diet improved Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, mitochondrial metabolic rate (cell viability), locomotor activity, and amelioration of oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation induced by CdCl2. The hesperidin diet supplement boosted the antioxidant milieu and ameliorated the oxidative damage in the treated flies. Overall, the findings revealed that hesperidin improved antioxidative protective capacity in Drosophila melanogaster model of CdCl2-induced toxicity. This suggests hesperidin as a potential therapeutic agent against oxidative stress disorders due to exposure to CdCl2 and or related toxicants.
