The aim of this systematic review is to establish the utility of 3D scanning technologies in the assessment of lower limb oedema. A computer-based search was completed in October 2020. Four studies were identified which utilised a 3D scanner to measure lower limb oedema. A review of the studies found very little evidence to support the efficacy of 3D laser scanning technology, although they show that the use of the technology is feasible. Current methods of lower leg oedema measurement have issues with reliability, practicability and time taken. To determine the efficacy of interventions with active parent implementation for young children with cerebral palsy (CP) to improve child and parent outcomes in low-middle income countries (LMICs).
Five databases were systematically searched. Randomised or comparison studies evaluating interventions with the training of the parent and/or home practice components to implement with their child with CP (<60 months of age) were included. The modified Downs and Black scale assessed methodological quality. Data were pooled to calculate mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
Searches yielded 189 unique articles. 11 studies from ten papers of moderate to high quality were included. Parent-implemented general developmental interventions had a small negative effect on gross motor function compared to interventionist-implemented therapy. Parent-implemented upper limb training compared to interventionist-implemented neurodevelopmental therapy had a small positive effect on bimanual hand function level of support and training provided to parents may be required to have a positive effect on parent stress.To further understand the feasibility of early interventions with active parent implementation in LMICs, data on adherence to home practice dose and session attendance and a qualitative understanding of contextual and child factors influencing parent implementation is needed.Objective The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of and relationship between malnutrition and depressive symptoms in older palliative care inpatients. Methods One hundred and thirty-six older adults were included in the study. The Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form, Mini Mental State Examination, Barthel index, and Lawton & Brody index were used to evaluate the mood, nutrition status, mental status, and activities of daily living of the patients. Results The mean age of the patients was 74.88 ± 8.82 years, and 63.2% of the patients were female. According to the nutritional assessment, 39.7% of the patients suffered from malnutrition, while 47.1% were at risk for it, and depressive symptoms were detected in 79.4% of the patients. A strong negative correlation was found between the scores for nutritional and depressive symptoms (r = -.750, 95% CI = -.834 to -.668). Conclusion Malnutrition, risk of malnutrition, and depressive symptoms were found to occur often among the patients, and the relationship between them was statistically significant. Our results highlight that the quality of life of palliative care patients could be improved by providing adequate nutrition and psychological support.
To reduce disparities in HIV care outcomes among Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) immigrants living with HIV in the U.S., it is necessary to identify factors influencing HIV care in this population. A systematic review that provides a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing retention in HIV care and viral suppression among LAC immigrants living with HIV in the U.S. is lacking. This systematic review used the Immigrant Health Services Utilization theoretical framework to provide an understanding of these factors.
We searched for peer-reviewed publications in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and ASSIA, from January 1996 to June 2020.
A total of 17 qualitative (
= 10) and quantitative (
= 7) studies were included in the review. The most commonly reported general and immigrant-specific factors appearing in studies were undocumented immigration status, HIV stigma, homophobia, cultural norms, values and beliefs, family and social support, language barriers, structure, complexity and quality of the U.S. healthcare delivery system, and patient-provider relationship.
These findings highlight the importance of considering immigrant-specific factors along with general factors to improve the provision of HIV care services and HIV care outcomes among LAC immigrant populations.
These findings highlight the importance of considering immigrant-specific factors along with general factors to improve the provision of HIV care services and HIV care outcomes among LAC immigrant populations.The purpose of this scoping review is to synthesize knowledge about medical mistrust and health among women who occupy other marginalized identities; namely women who also belong to one or more of the following social groups people of color, people of low socioeconomic status, people with disabilities, lesbian and bisexual women, and/or women who have sex with women. This scoping review is based on the methodological framework by Arksey and O'Malley (2005. "Scoping Studies Towards a Methodological Framework." International Journal of Social Research Methodology 8 19-32. doi10.1080/1364557032000119616). Specific search terms were entered into selected databases. Based on a set of inclusion criteria, articles were screened and assessed for eligibility. Data from the selected articles were extracted and summarized. Forty studies were included. Thirty-one studies used quantitative methodology, of which more than half used the Group-Based Medical Mistrust Scale. The majority of studies (84%) investigated the intersection of gender with race and ethnicity. Breast cancer and HIV combined accounted for more than half of the included studies. Of those studies that examined the relationship between medical mistrust and a health outcome or health behavior, almost all reported that medical mistrust had a deleterious impact. The aim of this study is to propose a new wave protocol to identify low-frequency oscillations for evaluating resting energy expenditure (REE) and compare its performance with the 5-minute interval abbreviated protocol and standard protocol.
Consecutive 20-minute indirect calorimetry (IC) was used to collect metabolic data from 23 women and 37 men (between 23 and 43 years old). Sliding window filter algorithms were used to eliminate noise. Three protocols were used to evaluate REE averaging the data between two consecutive waves (wave protocol), averaging the second 5-minute intervals (interval protocol), and averaging the last 15-minute REE (standard protocol).
Based on 60 healthy participants' metabolic data, compared with the interval protocol, the wave protocol showed better consistency with the standard protocol. We present such a model, which describes how the treatment of normovolemic anemia with blood transfusion impacts oxygen (O2) delivery (DO2, the product of blood O2 content and arterial blood flow) by the microcirculation. Our analysis accounts for the differential response of the endothelium to the wall shear stress (WSS) stimulus, changes in nitric oxide (NO) production due to modification of blood viscosity caused by alterations of both hematocrit (Hct) and cell free layer thickness, as well as for their combined effects on microvascular blood flow and DO2. Our model shows that transfusions of 1- and 2-unit of blood have a minimal effect on DO2 if the microcirculation is unresponsive to the WSS stimulus for NO production that causes vasodilatation increasing blood flow and DO2. Conversely, in a fully WSS responsive organism, blood transfusion significantly enhances blood flow and DO2, because increased viscosity stimulates endothelial NO production causing vasodilatation. This finding suggests that evaluation of a patients' pre-transfusion endothelial WSS responsiveness should be beneficial in determining the optimal transfusion requirements for treating anemic patients.
