The current study aimed to examine the age at which infants exhibit knowledge of the familiar size of common everyday objects. A total of 65 7- and 12-month-old infants were presented with familiar-sized and novel-sized (i.e., larger or smaller than the familiar size) common everyday objects (i.e., pacifiers and sippy cups), which were placed out of their reach. Both 7- and 12-month-olds' first looks were more frequently directed toward physically larger objects irrespective of whether they were familiar- or novel-sized objects. This finding indicates that initial visual orientation is contingent on the magnitude of the absolute physical size of an object. However, when the entire duration of presentation of the objects (i.e., 10 s) was examined, 12-month-olds' mean looking durations were found to be longer for novel-sized objects than for familiar-sized objects. Thus, although infants in both age groups were able to discern the physical sizes of objects, only 12-month-olds could successfully discriminate between the familiar and novel sizes of everyday objects. Notably, 12-month-olds demonstrated knowledge of familiar size even though the test objects were out of their reach and, consequently, unamenable to manual exploration. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP3), an important member of the IGFBP family, plays an important biological role in regulating cellular proliferation, differentiation, growth, apoptosis, and innate immunity. However, studies concerning IGFBP3 in teleosts are very limited and IGFBP3 function remains unclear. In this study, we conducted both in vivo and in vitro functional analyses of an IGFBP3 (TroIGFBP3) from the teleost fish golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). TroIGFBP3 is composed of 286 amino acid residues and shares a high amino acid sequence similarity (50.18%-93.71%) with other IGFBP3 sequences in humans and teleosts. TroIGFBP3 was widely distributed in various tissues, with the highest expression in the liver. TroIGFBP3 expression was significantly upregulated following Vibrio harveyi infection. The results of in vitro assays showed that TroIGFBP3 could stimulate macrophage activation and promote peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) proliferation. Meanwhile, TroIGFBP3 overexpression significantly inhibited bacterial infection in fish tissues, whereas TroIGFBP3 knockdown resulted in increased bacterial dissemination and colonization in golden pompano tissues in vivo. Furthermore, recombinant TroIGFBP3 could inhibit cellular proliferation and promote apoptosis of mouse tumor cells. Taken together, these results indicated that TroIGFBP3 plays a significant role in innate antibacterial immunity and provides a theoretical foundation for investigating the function of IGFBP3 in fish immune response. LncRNAs have been demonstrated to play pivotal roles in virous biological processes, especially the gene expression regulation, including transcriptional regulation, posttranscriptional control and epigenetic processes. However, most of the current studies of lncRNAs are still limited in mammalian species, the investigations of functional roles of lncRNAs in teleost species are still lacking. In current study, we identified a novel lncRNA (SETD3-OT) in turbot, with 2504 bp full-length obtained by 5' and 3' RACE, located in turbot chromosome 17, ranged from 20,933,835 to 20936,302 bp. Lys05 In addition, 8 neighboring genes of SETD3-OT were identified within 100 kbp in genome location. Form the annotation of the neighboring adjacent genes, SETD3-OT might involve in regulation of cell apoptosis and cycle, the immune cell development, and the immune response against infection, and its expression pattern is similar to majority of the neighboring genes following A. salmonicida challenge. Intriguingly, SETD3-OT showed significant high expression level in mucosal surfaces (intestine, gill and skin), and was dramatically down-regulated in these mucosal tissues following V. anguillarum challenge, especially in gill and skin. In addition, SETD3-OT was distributed in nucleus, it might regulate the neighboring genes in cis or in trans. Taken together, our results provide insights for lncRNA in fish innate immunity, further studies should be conduct to explore the detailed molecular mechanism of the gene regulation between SETD3-OT and its neighboring genes. Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) is an economically important marine fish cultured in China. In this study, fish in the experimental group were exposed to four temperatures 15, 20, 25 and 28 °C. Metabolomics analysis and quantitative real-time PCR were used to assess changes in metabolic profiling and gene expression associated with thermal stress. The results showed the levels of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), blood creatinine and cortisol in S. maximus were all significantly upregulated (P less then 0.05), indicating a stress response at 25 °C or higher. Challenge with thermal stress significantly increased expression levels of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase (FBPase), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (cPEPCK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (P less then 0.05). However, there was no effect on the expression levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (mPEPCK). Moreover, high temperature decreased levels of glycogenic amino acids, including histidine, threonine, glutamine, phenylalanine, arginine, serine, tyrosine, methionine and isoleucine. These findings suggest a significant correlation between gene expression and regulation of carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism in heat-stressed S. maximus kidney. In addition, the maintenance of aerobic metabolism and activation of gluconeogenesis appeared to be a critical metabolic strategy in combating heat stress in turbot kidney. Despite easy access to clinical examination majority of oral cancer patients ironically present with locally advanced disease, which is a heterogeneous group that includes all stage III/IV tumours in absence of distant metastasis. The AJCC TNM classification has included all tumours with depth of invasion >1 cm into locally advanced group irrespective of their surface dimensions. Surgery followed by adjuvant therapy provides best results and should be offered to all patients when operable. There have been a slew of recent publications popularising the concept of compartmental excision in variance to traditional resection with adequate margins. The role of chemotherapy has been explored in this group of patients for both organ preservation as well as to aid bioselection of suitable patients with borderline operable tumours for surgery.
