Approximately one in five adolescents in the United States has a mental health concern and suicide is the second leading cause of death in this population. To investigate the efficacy of a tailored counselling intervention for injured workers regarding different aspects of subjective well-being.

Prospective randomized controlled trial with 192 mildly-to-moderately injured workers who were on sick leave for at least 18 weeks and showed a high-risk profile for a complicated rehabilitation process in a screening. Patients were assessed at baseline, 12 and 18 months post-injury. The outcome variables concerned five aspects of subjective well-being (negative feelings, life and job satisfaction, satisfaction related to family and health). Both the control and the experimental group received conventional case management. Participants in the intervention group additionally received tailored workplace interventions and/or mental health counselling sessions.

Participants in the intervention group received an average of 2.23 (SD = 6.94) counselling sessions. These problems were identified by a literature review and from the author's experience, from many years working in the community. It has been found that education, knowledge, empowerment and communication are vital factors affecting patients' ability to manager their catheters themselves. The article begins with a discussion about how patients can be involved in and manage many aspects of care for their own catheters. It goes on to talk about the common catheter-associated problems and how these can be avoided or addressed. It is hoped that better management of catheter-associated complications in the community settings can prevent unnecessary visits to the emergency department, which will save time and costs for the health service, as well as avoid the negative impact of these on patient lives.

Spinal tuberculosis accounts for about 50% of cases among extra pulmonary osteoarticular tuberculosis. link3 Resistance to drugs in spinal tuberculosis patients is on a rise and there is inadequate literature concentrating on the precise pattern of resistance in Indian subcontinent which harbors 24% of global prevalence. The aim was to study the pattern of drug resistance in spinal tuberculosis among first- and second-line drugs. Drug resistance is common in spinal tuberculosis and we intended to find the prevalence of various drug resistance patterns.

Patients with spinal tuberculosis visiting a tertiary center were assessed. Samples were taken from the affected vertebrae and sent for BACTEC mycobacterium growth indicator tube (MGIT) 960 culture. Patients with a positive growth in MGIT were included in the study. All previously treated patients (relapse, treatment after failure, treatment after loss to follow-up and other previously treated patients) were excluded.

A total of 150 patients with a positive growth in MGIT report were included in the study, of whom 43 patients had some kind of drug resistance. Seven were multidrug resistant (MDR), 9 had preextensive drug resistance (pre-XDR), and 4 had extensive drug resistance (XDR). Seventeen patients had mono-drug resistance, which was most frequently for isoniazid. Resistance among second-line drugs was common in the fluoroquinolone group.

The two drugs currently approved for clinical use slow the rate of decline in lung function but have not been shown to halt disease progression or reverse established fibrosis. Thus, new therapeutic targets are needed. Endothelial injury and the resultant vascular permeability are critical components in the response to tissue injury, and are present in patients with IPF. However, it remains unclear how vascular permeability affects lung repair and fibrosis following injury. Lipid mediators such as sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) are known to regulate multiple homeostatic processes in the lung including vascular permeability. We demonstrate that endothelial cell (EC) specific deletion of the S1P receptor 1 (S1PR1) in mice (EC-S1pr1-/-) results in increased lung vascular permeability at baseline. Following a low dose intratracheal bleomycin challenge, EC-S1pr1-/- mice had increased and persistent vascular permeability compared to wild-type mice, which was strongly correlated with the amount and localization of resulting pulmonary fibrosis. EC-S1pr1-/- mice also had increased immune cell infiltration and activation of the coagulation cascade within the lung. However, increased circulating S1P ligand in ApoM overexpressing mice was insufficient to protect against bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis. We have previously found that treatment of prostate cancer PC3 cells with Teucrium persicum extract leads to the formation of small populations of epithelial cells. β-Catenin is a component of cell adherens junctions in epithelial cells and therefore, in this study, we have investigated the effect of Teucrium persicum extract on expression, cellular localization, and transcriptional activity of β-Catenin protein in PC-3 cells. Indirect immunofluorescence microscopy results showed that the cells treated with T. persicum extract had higher levels of β-Catenin protein at the cell membrane. Western blotting experiments produced consistent results. Gene expression studies by using a few β-Catenin-target genes including c-MYC, CYCLIN D1, and a reporter Luciferase gene under the control of several β-Catenin/TCF binding elements showed that treatment of PC3 cells with the methanolic extract of T. persicum decreases the transcriptional activities of β-Catenin. The results of this study provide further support for the anticancer properties of T. persicum. Definitely, more detailed molecular investigations are needed to find the mechanism(s) behind these effects. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the phytochemical and antiplasmodial properties of the plant. The methanol leaf extract of G. thunbergia inhibited Plasmodium falciparum at 50 µg/mL (> 80% inhibition) and was not cytotoxic against HeLa cells. Chromatographic purification of the extract afforded a new saponin and eight other known compounds. The saponin and two flavonoid glycosides displayed non-selective antiplasmodial activity at 50 µg/mL but the activities were diminished at 10 µg/mL. The presence of the isolated compounds in the leaf extract of G. thunbergia could account for the folkloric use of the plant in treating malaria.
