To compare the accuracy of INTERGROWTH-21 (IG-21) versus Hadlock1 formulae for birth weight prediction on third-trimester ultrasound in a North American population.
This single-centre retrospective cohort study included all pregnant patients who had a third-trimester ultrasound between 34
and 36
weeks gestation and delivered a term singleton at our maternal-fetal medicine reference centre between April 1 and July 30, 2019. Estimated ultrasound fetal weight was calculated with both Hadlock1 and IG-21 formulae for each fetus, then reported on a centile curve to adjust for gestational age at delivery, and compared with the actual birth weight.
The cohort included 600 women. The IG-21 formula had a comparable accuracy to Hadlock1 with mean absolute percentage errors (MAPEs) of 8.64 and 8.86, respectively (P = 0.191). Success rate, defined by a <10% discrepancy range of the actual birth weight, was significantly higher for IG-21 than for Hadlock1 (67.5% vs. 64.3%; P = 0.044).
Our results do not support the superiority of IG-21 to Hadlock1. There is a need for continued research to improve birth weight prediction with the ultimate objective of increasing the detection of small for gestation age and macrosomic fetuses.

We present the case of a patient admitted for signs of labour at 40 weeks gestation. At emergency cesarean delivery for cord prolapse, the patient was found to have a massive intraperitoneal bleed. Mechanical disruption of endometriotic scar tissue during positioning for an epidural may have been the precipitating event, as the symptoms of spontaneous hemorrhage, including hypotension and pain, appeared immediately afterward.
Without the cord prolapse, cesarean delivery would have been delayed and the spontaneous hemorrhage might have been missed. This case report alerts obstetricians to have a high index of suspicion for spontaneous hemorrhage in pregnant patients with a history of advanced-stage endometriosis, as this event can be life-threatening to mother and baby.

Secondary injury, characterized by progressive neuronal loss and astrogliosis, plays important roles in the post-TBI cognitive impairment and mood disorder. Unfortunately, there still lacks effective treatments, particularly surgery interferences for it. Recent findings of intercellular mitochondria transfer implies a potential therapeutic value of mitochondria transplantation for TBI, which has not been tested yet. In the present study, we demonstrated a quick dysfunction of mitochondria, up-regulation of Tom20 in the injured cortex and subsequent cognitive and mood impairment. Our data demonstrated that mitochondria derived from allogeneic liver or autogeneic muscle stimulated similar microglial activation in brain parenchyma. In vitro experiments showed that exogenous mitochondria could be easily internalized by neurons, astrocytes, and microglia, except for oligodendrocytes. Mitochondria transplantation effectively rescued neuronal apoptosis, restored the expression of Tom20 and the phosphorylation of JNK. Further analysis revealed that mitochondria transplantation in injured cortex induced a significant up-regulation of BDNF in reactive astrocytes, improved animals' spatial memory and alleviated anxiety. In together, our data indicate that mitochondria transplantation may has the potential of clinical translation for TBI treatment, in combination with surgery.The opioid crisis in the United States has been defined by waves of drug- and locality-specific Opioid use-Related Epidemics (OREs) of overdose and bloodborne infections, among a range of health harms. The ability to identify localities at risk of such OREs, and better yet, to predict which ones will experience them, holds the potential to mitigate further morbidity and mortality. This narrative review was conducted to identify and describe quantitative approaches aimed at the "risk assessment," "detection" or "prediction" of OREs in the United States. We implemented a PubMed search composed of the (1) objective (eg, prediction), (2) epidemiologic outcome (eg, outbreak), (3) underlying cause (ie, opioid use), (4) health outcome (eg, overdose, HIV), (5) location (ie, US). In total, 46 studies were included, and the following information extracted discipline, objective, health outcome, drug/substance type, geographic region/unit of analysis, and data sources. Studies identified relied on clinical, epidemiological, behavioral and drug markets surveillance and applied a range of methods including statistical regression, geospatial analyses, dynamic modeling, phylogenetic analyses and machine learning. Studies for the prediction of overdose mortality at national/state/county and zip code level are rapidly emerging. Geospatial methods are increasingly used to identify hotspots of opioid use and overdose. In the context of infectious disease OREs, routine genetic sequencing of patient samples to identify growing transmission clusters via phylogenetic methods could increase early detection capacity. A coordinated implementation of multiple, complementary approaches would increase our ability to successfully anticipate outbreak risk and respond preemptively. We present a multi-disciplinary framework for the prediction of OREs in the US and reflect on challenges research teams will face in implementing such strategies along with good practices.
tDCS modulates cortical plasticity and has shown potential to improve cognitive/motor functions in healthy young humans. However, age-related alterations of brain structure and functions might require an adaptation of tDCS-parameters to achieve a targeted plasticity effect in older humans and conclusions obtained from young adults might not be directly transferable to older adults. Thus, our study aimed to systematically explore the association between tDCS-parameters and induced aftereffects on motor cortical excitability to determine optimal stimulation protocols for older individuals, as well as to investigate age-related differences of motor cortex plasticity in two different age groups of older adults.

Our findings might set the grounds for the development of optimal stimulation protocols to reinstate neuroplasticity in different cortical areas and induce long-lasting, functionally relevant plasticity in normal aging and in pathological conditions, which would require however systematic tDCS titration studies over respective target areas.In late 2011, the outbreak of pseudorabies (PR) occurred in Bartha-K61-vaccinated pig farms and spread rapidly to many provinces of China, causing substantial economic losses to the swine industry. link2 A total of 4708 pig serum samples from Henan province during 2018-2019 were collected to screen for the presence of pseudorabies virus (PRV) gE-specific antibodies, and phylogenetic analysis based on the gE gene of PRV was performed. Of the 4708 serum samples tested, 30.14% (1419/4708) were seropositive for PRV antibodies, based on PRV gE-coated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), with slaughterhouses having the highest seroprevalence. The seropositive rates of PRV also varied with the region and the season. Phylogenetic analysis showed that three PRV isolates from this study were clustered in an independent branch together with the Chinese variant PRV strains (after 2012), and had a closer genetic relationship with the Chinese variant PRV strains, but differed genetically from the 4 early Chinese PRV strains and 4 European-American strains. This study suggests that three PRV isolates may belong to PRV variants, and the development of a novel vaccine against PRV variants is particularly urgent.Since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused global pandemic with alarming speed, comprehensively analyzing the mutation and evolution of early SARS-CoV-2 strains contributes to detect and prevent such virus. Here, we explored 1962 high-quality genomes of early SARS-CoV-2 strains obtained from 42 countries before April 2020. The changing trends of genetic variations in SARS-CoV-2 strains over time and country were subsequently identified. In addition, viral genotype mapping and phylogenetic analysis were performed to identify the variation features of SARS-CoV-2. Results showed that 57.89% of genetic variations involved in ORF1ab, most of which (68.85%) were nonsynonymous. Haplotype maps and phylogenetic tree analysis showed that amino acid variations in ORF1ab (p.5828P > L and p.5865Y > C, also NSP13 P504L and NSP13 Y541C) were the important characteristics of such clade. Furthermore, these variants showed more significant aggregation in the United States (P = 2.92E-66, 95%) than in Australia or Canada, especially in strains from Washington State (P = 1.56E-23, 77.65%). Further analysis demonstrated that the report date of the variants was associated with the date of increased infections and the date of recovery and fatality rate change in the United States. More importantly, the fatality rate in Washington State was higher (4.13%) and showed poorer outcomes (P = 4.12E-21 in fatality rate, P = 3.64E-29 in death and recovered cases) than found in other states containing a small proportion of strains with such variants. Using sequence alignment, we found that variations at the 504 and 541 sites had functional effects on NSP13. In this study, the prevalence of Entamoeba infections was examined in wild rhesus macaques by examining 73 and 90 fecal samples collected from two sites, Popa Taung Kalat (PTK) and Pho Win Taung (PWT), in Myanmar. The positive rates of E. link3 nuttalli detected using PCR were 49% and 31% in PTK and PWT, respectively, but no infections of E. histolytica and E. moshkovskii were found. Entamoeba dispar was detected in 6% of samples only from PWT. Positive rates of E. chattoni and E. coli were both 70% in PWT and 67% and 79% in PTK, respectively. Six E. nuttalli strains from PTK and eight from PWT were obtained in the culture with xenic medium and then, one and two strains, respectively, were axenized and finally cloned. The genotypic analysis of serine-rich protein genes revealed two genotypes each in both sites. The genotypes found in five of six strains from PTK were similar to those from the strains found in Nepal, whereas the remaining one from PTK and two from PWT were similar to those obtained from macaques in China.
