Cuprous halides, characterized by a direct wide band-gap and a good lattice matching with Si, is an intrinsic p-type I-VII compound semiconductor. It shows remarkable optoelectronic properties, including a large exciton binding energy at room temperature and a very small piezoelectric coefficient. The major obstacle to its application is the difficulty in growing a single-crystal epitaxial film of cuprous halides. We first demonstrate the single crystal epitaxy of high quality cuprous iodide (CuI) film grown on Si and sapphire substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Enhanced photoluminescence on the order of magnitude larger than that of GaN and continuous-wave optically pumped lasing were found in MBE grown CuI film. The intrinsic p-type characteristics of CuI were confirmed using an n-AlGaN/p-CuI junction that emits blue light. The discovery will provide an alternative way towards highly efficient optoelectronic devices compatible with both Si and III-nitride technologies.Based on the density functional theory, the electronic and optical properties of pristine monolayer PdSe2 with Pd or Se vacancy-defect are investigated. Our results show that the Se defect is energetically more favorable than that of Pd defect. The band gap reduces, and some new midgap states appear after the Pd or Se defects are introduced. In terms of the optical properties, the prominent anisotropic characters are remained. The obvious new peaks of the dielectric constant appear after introducing defects. The light absorption in the visible energy range expands based on the appearance of the midgap states induced by the Pd or Se defects. The changes of the refractive index and reflectivity are similar with those of the dielectric constants and the light absorption. It is used in many essential oils for relieving sinus and lung congestion caused by a variety of conditions. This pilot study sought to analyze clinical evidence for the effect of the scent of eucalyptol on the cognitive function of elderly people. Seventy nursing-home residents with cognitive impairment were recruited. Three one-week experiments were performed eucalyptol scent was diffused in bedrooms with a diffuser only at wake-up time in the first experiment, and at wake-up time and bedtime in the second and third experiments. Results showed that although an improvement was not seen when using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Cohen-Mansfild Agitation Inventory (CMAI) measures, Dementia Behavior Disturbance Scale (DBD) scores improved significantly, even though no subject reported perceiving the scent. The significant improvements of the behaviour were found not only among the subjects whose room had a diffuser but also among the subjects who were exposed to an unperceivable level of eucalyptol drifted in the living room.Limited research has examined the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and knee pain in people with osteoarthritis (OA). Therefore, this study aimed at examining the association between DM and knee pain severity, and to explore the association between DM and knee pain distribution (unilateral or bilateral versus no pain) in subjects with knee OA. This is a cross-sectional analysis of the baseline visit of individuals who were enrolled in the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Data of participants with knee OA were used for this analysis (n = 1319), and grouped into subjects with both knee OA and DM (n = 148) or knee OA only without DM (n = 1171). Pain severity was measured using a numeric rating scale from 0 to 10 over the past 7 and 30 days for each knee, and the more symptomatic knee with higher pain severity was chosen for analysis. DM was significantly associated with increased knee pain severity over 7 days (B 0.68; 95% CI 0.25-1.11) and over 30 days (B 0.59; 95% CI 0.17-1.01) after adjustments for all covariates, including age, gender, BMI, race, depression symptoms, composite OA score, use of pain medications, and knee injections. Multinomial regression showed that participants with knee OA and DM had 2.45 (95% CI 1.07-5.61) to 2.55 (95% CI 1.12-5.79) times higher likelihood of having unilateral and bilateral knee pain than those without DM and without knee pain. Therefore, this study aimed to employ nitrate reduction-driven calcium carbonate precipitation in remediation of lead and mercury aerobically and anaerobically by Proteus mirabilis 10B, for the first time. Initially, Plackett-Burman design was employed to screen of 16 independent variables for their significances on periplasmic (NAP) and membrane-bound (NAR) nitrate reductases. The levels for five significant variables and their interaction effects were further optimized by central composite design. The maximum activities of NAP and NAR recorded 2450 and 3050 U/mL by 2-fold enhancement, comparing with non-optimized medium. Under aerobic and anaerobic optimized remediation conditions, the changes in media chemistry revealed positive correlation among bacterial growth, nitrate reductase activity, pH, NO3- and NO2- consumption and removal of Ca2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+. Subsequently, the remediated precipitates were subjected to mineralogical analysis; energy dispersive X-ray patterns exhibited characteristic peaks of C, O and Ca in addition to Pb and Hg. Interestingly, such approach is feasible, efficient, cost-effective and ecofriendly for heavy metals remediation.Error monitoring is crucial for the conscious error perception, however, the role of early error monitoring in error awareness remains unclear. Here, we investigated the relation between the ERN and error-related theta oscillations and the emergence of error awareness by conducting time- and phase-locked averaging analysis based on 4-8 Hz filtered data and phase-locked time frequency analysis. Results showed that while the ERN did not differ significantly between aware and unaware errors, theta power was stronger for aware errors than for unaware errors. Further, when continuous EEG was filtered outside the theta band, the ERN results confirmed this pattern. Additionally, when the non-phase-locked component was removed from continuous EEG, stronger theta power was still observed in aware errors compared to unaware errors. Collectively, these findings may suggest that (1) the ERN emerges from phase-locked component of theta band EEG activities; (2) the ERN engages in conscious error perception and serves the emerging error awareness through the activity of theta oscillations. Thus, early error monitoring is a precursor to error awareness, but this relationship is masked by high-frequency activity in aware errors when the ERN is not filtered outside the theta band in the Go/No-go task.This article has been retracted.The spleen is a large lymphoid organ located in the abdomen that filters blood and regulates the immune system. The extent of mobilization of splenic immune cells to peripheral tissues in health and disease, however, remains poorly understood. This is due, in large part, to a lack of in vivo, spleen-specific lineage tagging strategies. Here, we describe a detailed practical protocol of spleen transplantation and its evaluation for long-term graft survival. Unlike implantation of splenic morsels in the great omentum, our approach uses arterial and venous anastomoses which rapidly restores blood flow and facilitates long-term survival of the graft. As a main regulatory pathway, fully methylated CpG are recognized by methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) proteins that act in concert with chromatin remodelers, histone deacetylases and methyltransferases to trigger transcriptional downregulation. In turn, MBD mutations can alter CpG binding, and in case of the MBD protein MeCP2 can cause the neurological disorder Rett syndrome (RTT). An additional layer of complexity in CpG recognition is added by ten-eleven-translocation (TET) dioxygenases that oxidize mC to 5-hydroxymethyl-, 5-formyl- and 5-carboxylcytosine, giving rise to fifteen possible combinations of cytosine modifications in the two CpG strands. We report a comprehensive, comparative interaction analysis of the human MBD proteins MeCP2, MBD1, MBD2, MBD3, and MBD4 with all CpG combinations and observe individual preferences of each MBD for distinct combinations. In addition, we profile four MeCP2 RTT mutants and reveal that although interactions to methylated CpGs are similarly affected by the mutations, interactions to oxidized mC combinations are differentially affected. These findings argue for a complex interplay between local TET activity/processivity and CpG recognition by MBDs, with potential consequences for the transcriptional landscape in normal and RTT states.The extended coastlines of Oman have been forced to change in the last few decades because of urbanization development or by natural disasters. Recently, Oman has suffered from a couple of tornados and cyclones, e.g. Cyclone Gonu on June 1, 2007, making the changes even much more dynamic. In order to protect the coastal regions infrastructure, an accurate estimation of shoreline erosion is required. This research paper presents an assessment of shoreline erosion magnitudes using field measurements coupled with Multiple Linear Regressions Models (MLR) to predict future changes. Inverse Distance Weighing and Kriging interpolation methods have been applied in order to visualize shoreline variations from gathered data prospective. The field measurements for the shoreline were taken at 19 different points, the space between the points in a range of 500-700 m approximately. The first field measurements were taken on 19th 20th 21st of June, 2016 while the second field measurements were taken on 14th 15th 16th of November 2016. Pearson correlation shows a strong relationship between the first and the second field trips with an average of 0.83. This significant relationship ensures the applicability of MLRs to project future changes on the shorelines. The results of the MLRs showed severe negative volumetric shoreline erosion with an average of 5.2 m/year with some exceptions at the catchment outlets.Antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) is commonly used in joint replacement therapy for prevention and treatment of bone infection and mechanical properties of the cement is still an important issue. The effects of ciprofloxacin and vancomycin was investigated on mechanical characterization of PMMA bone cement. Different properties of cement containing (0, 2.5, 5 and 10% W/W) antibiotics, including compressive and bending properties, microstructural, porosity and density were evaluated. Both antibiotics significantly reduced the density values and mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength and modulus) in all groups in comparison to control over first two weeks (p  0.05). The effect of antibiotic loading is both molecular weight and drug content dependent. The time is also an important parameter and the second week is the probably optimum time to study mechanical behavior of ALBC.
