Familiarity with the CT and MR characteristics of these conditions is important to guide clinical evaluation. We review the tissue types, characteristic clinical, demographic, and imaging features of retroperitoneal tumors and tumor-like non-neoplastic conditions with CT and MR correlation, including anatomic and imaging clues, and provide a diagnostic approach to aide the radiologist in making a specific diagnosis.

The post-operative mortality after hip fracture surgery is high and has remained largely unchanged during the last decades. The Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) is a tool used to evaluate the 30-day risk of, among other outcomes, post-operative mortality. The aim of this study is to determine the association between the RCRI score and post-operative mortality in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.

Data was obtained from the national hip fracture register which was cross-referenced with patients' electronic hospital records. All adults who underwent primary emergency hip fracture surgery in Orebro County, Sweden, between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017, were included. Patients were divided into two cohorts low RCRI (score = 0-1) and high RCRI (score ≥ 2). A Poisson regression model was employed to investigate the association between a high RCRI score and 30- and 90-day post-operative mortality.

A total of 2443 patients, of whom 446 (18%) had a high RCRI score, were included in the current study. When adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities and type of surgery, the incidence of 30-day mortality increased by 46% in the high RCRI cohort (adj. IRR 1.46, 95% CI, 1.10-1.94, p = 0.010). Similar results were observed for 90-day mortality (adj. IRR 1.50, 95% CI, 1.21-1.84, p < 0.001).

The RCRI is applicable to patients that undergo surgery for traumatic hip fractures. check details A high RCRI score is associated with an increased incidence of both 30- and 90-day post-operative mortality. Future studies to evaluatethese findings are needed.

Consequently, knowledge of the thoracic duct (TD) anatomy is essential to prevent its inadvertent injury during surgery. If the TD is injured, early diagnosis and immediate intervention are of paramount importance; however, there is still no universal consensus about the management of post-operative chylothorax. With increasing advances in the spheres of interventional radiology and minimally invasive surgery, there are now several options for managing TD injury. We review this topic in detail to provide a comprehensive and practical overview to help surgeons manage this challenging complication. In particular, we discuss an appropriate step-up approach to prevent the morbidity associated with open surgery as well as the metabolic, nutritional, and immunological disorders that accompany a prolonged illness. In the last decades, efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels have increased the search for alternative sustainable sources of renewable energy. In this scenario, hydrocarbons derived from fatty acids are among the compounds that have been drawing attention. The intracellular production of hydrocarbons by bacteria derived from cold environments such as the Antarctic continent is currently poorly investigated, as extremophilic microorganisms provide a great range of metabolic capabilities and may represent a key tool in the production of biofuels. The aim of this study was to explore the ability of bacterial cells derived from extreme environments to produce hydrocarbons with potential for further use as biofuels. Seven bacteria isolated from Antarctic samples were evaluated for hydrocarbon production using GC-MS approaches. Two isolates, identified as Arthrobacter livingstonensis 593 and Pseudoalteromonas arctica 628, were able to produce the hydrocarbon undecane (CH3-(CH2)9-CH3) in concentrations of 1.39 mg L-1 and 1.81 mg L-1, respectively. Results from the present work encourage further research focusing on the optimization of hydrocarbon production by the isolates identified as producers, which may be used in further aircraft biofuel production. This is the first report on the production of the undecane compound by bacteria isolated from waterlogged soil and sponge from Antarctica.

To describe the clinical outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty combined with phacoemulsification/posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation (triple procedure) for treatment of corneal decompensation induced by a phakic anterior chamber intraocular lens (AC IOL) implantation.

Ten patients (10 eyes) with corneal decompensation due to phakic AC IOL implantation that had undergone the triple procedure were included in this study. Among the 10 eyes, 5 eyes underwent explantation of AC IOL prior to the transplantation, and then underwent the triple procedure. link2 The remaining 5 eyes with a phakic AC IOL in situ underwent the triple procedure with concurrent explantation of AC IOL. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), subjective refraction, endothelial cell density (ECD), and complications were documented.

The triple procedure was performed across all eyes without any adverse events. The average CDVA improved from 1.32 ± 0.24 preoperatively to 0.15 ± 0.05 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR), which represents an improvement in Snellen equivalent from 20/400 (0.05) preoperatively to 20/28 (0.71) at 12 months after surgery. At 12 months, all eyes reached a CDVA of 20/32 (0.63) or better, and 50% of eyes reached a CDVA of 20/25 (0.8) or better. The mean donor ECD±SD was 2868.7 ± 67.9 cells/mm

, which decreased to 1724.1 ± 84.6 cells/mm

at 12 months, representing 39.9% of endothelial cell loss. Patients did not experience any severe adverse events.

The triple procedure is a safe and effective option for corneal decompensation induced by a phakic AC IOL implantation, helping achieve a satisfactory visual rehabilitation with few complications.

(1) To assess the thickness of the central choroid (BM-CSI) in swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) examination of lamellar macular holes (LMHs). (2) To establish correlations between the thickness of the central choroid (BM-CSI) in the LHM and the parameters of best-corrected visual acuity and reading vision in patients with LMH.

This prospective case-control study assessed a group of 30 patients (30 eyes) with LMHs and a control group of 45 patients (90 eyes). The thickness of the central choroid (BM-CSI) was measured with an SS-OCT device. The average choroidal thickness in the fovea was defined as average thickness in the central area of 1000 μm in diameter, according to the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS). link3 The results were correlated with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and reading vision.

The average choroidal thickness in the study group (SG) with LMH was 160.34 μm (SD = 77.1), whereas in the control group (CG), it was 225.11 μm (SD = 93.8). The difference ofopment. To assess the extracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticles using marine derived fungi Aspergillus brunneoviolaceus with their antibacterial and antioxidant activities.

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles was estimated by the change in color from light yellow to dark brown within 36h as the reaction progressed. UV-Visible spectroscopy exhibited its stability at 411nm; ATR-FTIR spectroscopy depicted the functional group responsible for its production; X-Ray Diffraction denoted its crystalline FCC structure resembling the peaks in XRD pattern, corresponding to [111], [200], [220], [311] and [222] planes; TEM imaging revealed its spherical morphology with the particle size ranging from 0.72 to 15.21nm and Tauc's plot analysis that disclosed its band gap energy as 2.44eV that manifested the potential of AgNPs to be semiconductors. The characterization data henceforth, confirmed the efficient production of silver nanoparticles. The biosynthesized AgNPs expressed strong antibacterial activity against two Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria. They also proved to possess higher antioxidative potentials by showing their potent radical scavenging activity against DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl).

The study unfolds the prospect for further utilization of this mycogenically synthesized AgNPs as antibacterial, antioxidative and anticancer agents.

To date, 13 cases of primary bone PEComa have been reported in the literature and five reported fibroma-like PEComas were found in the soft tissues of patients with tuberous sclerosis (TSC). However, no fibroma-like PEComa has been reported in bone, either sporadic or TSC-associated. Here we report the case of a 22-year-old man with known TSC, who presented for evaluation of an asymptomatic mass in his left fibula diaphysis that had been present for 5 years. He had no activity-related pain, numbness, weakness, or limitations in range of motion. Both 3-T MRI and CT demonstrated a tumor originating from the midshaft middiaphyseal fibula. Axial T1-weighted and fat-saturated T2-weighted fast spin echo images showed a well-defined lesion in the fibula with extension into the surrounding soft tissues. Whole body bone scan was negative for metastasis using technetium-99m. Renal ultrasound was unremarkable with no evidence of angiomyolipoma. Histopathology demonstrated isolated spindle cells in a dense collagenous matrix. By immunohistochemical staining, tumor cells were positive for HMB-45 and MiTF and partially positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin supporting a diagnosis of fibroma-like PEComa of the midshaft fibula. Although fibroma-like PEComa of bone is very rare, a bone tumor in the setting of TSC should raise suspicion for the diagnosis, in particular if histology demonstrates rare epithelioid cells in a densely fibrotic stroma. To evaluate an implementation intervention to increase the uptake, referred to as reach, of two evidence-based psychotherapies (EBP) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) PTSD specialty clinics. The implementation intervention was external facilitation guided by a toolkit that bundled strategies associated with high EBP reach in prior research. We used a prospective quasi-experimental design. The facilitator worked with local champions at two low-reach PTSD clinics. Each intervention PTSD clinic was matched to three control clinics. We compared the change in EBP reach from 6-months pre- to post-intervention using Difference-in-Difference (DID) effect estimation. To incorporate possible clustering effects and adjust for imbalanced covariates, we used mixed effects logistic regression to model the probability of EBP receipt. Analyses were conducted separately for PTSD and other mental health clinics. 29,446 veterans diagnosed with PTSD received psychotherapy in the two intervention and six control sites in the two 6-month evaluation periods.
