To compare changes in optic disc microvascular parameters before and after treatment of patients who received IVD for macular edema secondary to BRVO, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A).

Eighteen BRVO patients who received only IVD treatment and 20 healthy controls were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with moderate or severe IOP spikes (>6mmHg) after implantation were excluded from the study. Whole, peripapillary, inside disc capillary density and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) were recorded at the 2nd and 6th months after implantation.

Whole, peripapillary and inside disc capillary densities were significantly lower in BRVO patients before implantation than in the control group (P<0.001 for all comparisons). Despite a mild mean IOP increase after IVD, no significant change was observed in whole, peripapillary and inside disc capillary vascular densities in the 2nd and 6th months (P>0.05 for all comparisons). The mean RNFLT of BRVO patients before IVD was lower than the control group, but this difference was not statistically significant (110.1±12.3μm and 115.6±10.7μm, P=0.131). The mean RNFLT at the 2nd and 6th months did not show a statistically significant difference after implantation (P=0.239, P=0.459).

The authors aimed to evaluate the dry eye disease (DED), MGD, in psoriasis patients with meibography which is a current, objective, noninvasive method for patients with meibomian gland diseases, to investigate the relationship between disease severity and ocular involvement.

This study included 50 participants with psoriasis and 50 healthy individuals. All subjects were examined by the same dermatologist and referred for ophthalmological examination including meibomian gland obstruction, lid margin alterations assessment, ocular surface disease index assessment, tear film break-up time test, Schirmer test, corneal conjunctival fluorescein staining assessment. Being a member of the dental profession is often associated with stress and high levels of burnout. Stress coping strategies may significantly help mediate burnout. The present cross-sectional study sought to examine the role of stress coping strategies on burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction amongst Israeli dentists.

The study was carried out amongst Israeli dentists with the use of the following questionnaires (1) the Professional Quality of Life Scale 5 (ProQOL), referring to burnout, compassion satisfaction, and level of secondary traumatic stress; (2) the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations-Situation Specific Coping Inventory (CISS-SSC), referring to coping strategies (task-focused, emotion-focused, or avoidance-focused coping); and (3) demographic and professional variables (eg, specialisation, workload). Participants included 243 Israeli dentists. Univariate analyses and linear regressions were conducted to evaluate the relationships amongst coping strategies and burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction.

Female dentists had higher emotion-focused and avoidance coping scores than male dentists. Burnout could be explained by higher emotion-focused coping scores and lower task-focused and avoidance-focused coping. Secondary traumatic stress could be explained by higher emotion-focused scores, having fewer years of professional experience, and younger ages. Compassion satisfaction could be explained by lower emotion-focused coping as well as by higher task-focused coping and workload scores, specialisation, and gender.

This study was performed to examine changes in the number of patient visits and types of oral services in an oral emergency department from the beginning to the control stage of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Beijing.

The numbers of daily oral emergency visits from January 20 to March 24, 2020, at a dental university hospital in Beijing and daily newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in Beijing during the same period were collected and analysed. All oral emergency patient information (including sex, age, and oral diagnosis) was also collected and analysed. Patients with incomplete medical data were excluded.

In total, 12,416 patients were included in this study. The number of daily emergency visits was negatively correlated with the number of newly confirmed local COVID-19 cases in Beijing (P < .001). The number of daily emergency visits during the COVID-19 stable period in Beijing was greater than that during the outbreak period (P < .001). In this population-based, cross-sectional study, coronary artery calcium score (CACS), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c-f PWV) and fasting plasma copeptin were measured in 5303 individuals in the Swedish cardiopulmonary bioimage study (SCAPIS). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between copeptin and high CACS (>100) and high c-f PWV (>10m/s), respectively.

The number of individuals with high CACS and c-f PWV increased across increasing tertile of copeptin (11.7%, 13.3% and 16.3% for CACS and 6.9%, 8.5% and 10.6% for c-f PWV). Sex hormones (SH) may contribute to sex differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD). High free testosterone (T) and low sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) have been associated with progression of coronary artery calcification in women. We now examined the association of SH with extra-coronary calcification (ECC) prevalence and progression among MESA participants.

We studied 2,737 postmenopausal women and 3,130 men free of clinical CVD with baseline SH levels. ECC measurements [ascending and descending thoracic aortic calcification (ATAC, DTAC), mitral annular calcification (MAC), aortic valve calcification (AVC)] were obtained by computed tomography at baseline and after 2.4±0.9 years. We used multivariable Poisson regression to evaluate associations with ECC prevalence and incidence (Agatston scores >0) and linear mixed effects models for ECC progression, per 1-SD increment in log(SH) in women and men separately.

The mean age was 65±9 and 62±10 years for women and men, respectively. In women, greater free T and lower SHBG were associated with MAC incidence in a demographic-adjusted model only. In men, lower free T was associated with MAC prevalence, DTAC incidence and progression, while greater SHBG was associated with MAC prevalence and DTAC progression after further adjusting for CVD risk factors.

In this diverse cohort free of CVD, we found some associations of SH with ECC measures. In particular, free T was inversely associated with prevalent MAC and DTAC progression in men independent of CVD risk factors.
