(1) Background It is well established that the insula is involved in olfaction, though its specific role in olfactory processing remains uncertain. In this paper, we first review the current literature on the insula and olfaction. Then, we describe the case of a 56-year-old man with a left insular cavernoma that caused olfactory disturbances. (2) Results Structural neuroimaging studies suggest that insular gray matter volume is related to olfactory function, and functional neuroimaging shows that various types of stimuli lead to either lateralized or bilateral insular activations. Studies using electro-cortical stimulation reveal a specific region of the insular cortex, around the central insular sulcus, that could be related to unpleasant odor processing. Previous cases of insular lesions leading to olfactory disturbances suggest that left-sided insular lesions may more frequently lead to olfactory changes. In our patient with a left insular cavernoma, odors that were previously perceived as pleasant started smelling unpleasant and were hard to distinguish. Despite these subjective complaints, olfactory function assessed with the Sniffin' Sticks test was normal. (3) Conclusions Current tests may not be sensitive to all types of olfactory impairments associated with insular damage, and further studies should be conducted to develop olfactory tests assessing the hedonic appreciation of odors. It is known that the data acquisition and processing system plays an important role in radar target detection system. In order to meet the requirements of real-time processing and accurate transmission of echo signals in high-frequency ground-wave radar (HFGWR) systems, a new acquisition and transmission framework utilizing the designed acquisition card based on the PCIe (peripheral component interconnect express) has been designed and is presented in this paper. The Xilinx FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) chip Kintex7-XC7K325T is adopted as a hardware carrier in acquisition card. The hardware's composition, analog front-end circuit, the DMA (Direct Memory Access) transmission, FPGA structure, ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) chip, and performance test of this card are showed and discussed. Currently, the acquisition card has been accomplished and applied in the practical system of HFGWR.

Hallux valgus (HV) is a gait-altering orthopedic deformity, somewhat more prevalent in women, which often affects both limbs. Although surgery is a commonly applied treatment, there is no consensus in the literature on how invasive HV correction affects spatiotemporal gait parameters, or how quickly improvement can be expected. We investigated gait parameters in female HV patients who underwent bilateral surgical correction of hallux valgus, both preoperatively and 18 weeks following surgery (a timeframe relevant from the perspective of physical therapy), and also in relation to a non-HV control group.

A total of 23 women aged 40-70 years, with moderate to severe HV deformity in both feet, were assessed preoperatively and 18 weeks postoperatively, and an age-matched control group of 76 healthy women was also assessed. A total of 22 spatiotemporal parameters were collected during 30 s walks over an electronic walkway (Zebris Medical System).

Of the 22 parameters analyzed, significant differences between rovement.Transcription of protein-encoding genes starts with forming a pre-initiation complex comprised of RNA polymerase II and several general transcription factors. To activate gene expression, transcription factors must overcome repressive chromatin structure, which is accomplished with multiprotein complexes. One such complex, SAGA, modifies the nucleosomal histones through acetylation and other histone modifications. A prototypical histone acetyltransferase (HAT) known as general control non-repressed protein 5 (GCN5), was defined biochemically as the first transcription-linked HAT with specificity for histone H3 lysine 14. In this review, we analyze the components of the putative plant SAGA complex during plant evolution, and current knowledge on the biological role of the key components of the HAT module, GCN5 and ADA2b in plants, will be summarized.Developmental screening instruments were designed as diagnostic tools, but there is growing interest in understanding whether select tools can also be used systematically in research to examine intervention impacts on long-term outcomes. As such, this systematic review aims to examine associations between child development assessment tools and educational attainment, academic achievement, or wealth. We included studies identified in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Educational Resources Information Center if they reported an association between at least one tool from a pre-established list and one outcome of interest after age 10. learn more Of 597 studies identified, 11 met inclusion criteria; three examined educational attainment as the outcome of interest, six examined academic achievement, one wealth, and one both educational attainment and wealth. Intelligence tests were utilized in five of the included studies, neuropsychological/executive function or behavior tools were used in five, and one study used tools across the domains. High-quality studies were identified across all three of the domains, but educational attainment and wealth had the greatest proportion of high-quality studies, as compared to academic achievement. Our review demonstrates the potential for certain child development assessment tools to adequately assess long-term outcomes of interest, but additional prospective studies using validated, culturally appropriate tools are needed. Viscosity is an essential parameter frequently used in many fields. The vibration type viscometer based on self-excited oscillation generally requires displacement sensor although they can measure high viscosity without deterioration of sensitivity. The proposed viscometer utilizes the sensorless self-excited oscillation without any detection of the displacement of the cantilever, which uses the interaction between the mechanical dynamics of the cantilever and the electrical dynamics of the piezoelectric device attached to the cantilever. Since the proposed viscometer has fourth-order dynamics and two coupled oscillator systems, the systems can produce different self-excited oscillations through different Hopf bifurcations. We theoretically showed that the response frequency jumps at the two Hopf bifurcation points and this distance between them depends on the viscosity. Using this distance makes measurement highly sensitive and easier because the jump in the response frequency can be easily detected.
