the context of contact allergens. Identification of the most reactive sites of abundant proteins, such as HSA and Hb, is the first step toward identification of contact allergy biomarkers that can be used for biomonitoring and to develop better diagnostic tools based on a blood sample. The mechanism of the redox-neutral organocatalytic Mitsunobu reaction, catalyzed by (2-hydroxybenzyl)diphenylphosphine oxide, reported by Denton et al., has been studied computationally with ωB97X-D density functional theory. We discovered that the nucleophilic substitution reaction between carboxylate and alkoxyphosphonium ions, to reform the phosphine oxide catalyst, is the rate-determining step of the overall process and is significantly accelerated compared with a general-acid-catalyzed SN2 reaction. The (2-hydroxybenzyl)diphenylphosphine oxide is regenerated and activated in every catalytic cycle via intramolecular dehydration/cyclization. We also designed several phosphine oxide catalysts that we predict to be more effective catalysts.Biological muscles generally possess well-aligned muscle fibers and thus excellent strength and toughness. Inspired by their microstructure, tough wood hydrogels with a preserved unique alignment of cellulose fibers, mechanical anisotropy, and desirable flexibility were developed by introducing chemically and ionically cross-linked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) into the abundant pores of delignified wood. PAA chains well infiltrated the parallelly aligned cellulose fibers of wood and formed a layer-by-layer network structure, resulting in strong, elastic tangential, and radial wood hydrogel slices. The tangential slices had a high compressive strength of 1.73 MPa and a maximum strain at fracture of 69.4%, while those of the radial slices were 0.6 MPa and 47.0%. After sandwiching the radial and tangential hydrogel slices with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film electrodes into capacitive pressure sensors (CPSs), the tangential CPS displayed the most desired, gradient sensitivity values in the whole stress range. Additionally, the wrinkling treatment of the rGO electrode greatly improved the capacitance responsiveness toward pressure. The real-time sensing stress values of our tangential CPS during monitoring practical human activities were calculated in the range of 0.1-1.3 MPa, demonstrating the achievement of ultrafast, highly sensitive, and wide-stress-range detection for potential applications in human-machine interfaces.Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease caused by Plasmodium species, claims more than 400,000 lives globally each year. The increasing drug resistance of the parasite renders the development of new anti-malaria drugs necessary. Alternatively, better delivery systems for already marketed drugs could help to solve the resistance problem. Herein, we report glucose-based ultra-small gold nanoparticles (Glc-NCs) that bind to cysteine-rich domains of Plasmodium falciparum surface proteins. Microscopy shows that Glc-NCs bind specifically to extracellular and all intra-erythrocytic stages of P. falciparum. Glc-NCs may be used as drug delivery agents as illustrated for ciprofloxacin, a poorly soluble antibiotic with low antimalarial activity. Ciprofloxacin conjugated to Glc-NCs is more water-soluble than the free drug and is more potent. Glyco-gold nanoparticles that target cysteine-rich domains on parasites may be helpful for the prevention and treatment of malaria.Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is characterized by periods of acute inflammation and remission. Therapeutic management of IBD is still problematic, because of incomplete understanding its pathogenesis. This study focuses on the effect of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis on changes in enteric neuronal subpopulations in adult zebrafish. These changes are suggested to be related to the altered neuro-immune interactions and GI motility, and in IBD pathogenesis. New insights into neuroplasticity will be instrumental in finding appropriate therapeutic treatments. TNBS was intraluminally administered in the distal intestine (DI) of anesthetized adult zebrafish. A histological time course of the intestinal inflammatory response was created to establish optimal TNBS concentration and acute inflammation phase. Using double immunolabelling on whole mounts, the effect of inflammation on neuronal populations was analyzed. Based on inBD therapies.Lung Ultrasound (LUS) is regarded to be potentially useful to diagnose lung injury in older adults living in nursing homes with suspected COVID-19 pneumonia. We aimed at evaluating presence lung injury among senior nursing home residents by LUS performed with portable wireless scanner echography. The study population consisted of 150 residents with a mean age of 88 years (85% female) residing in 12 nursing homes in Northern Italy. Subjects had to have a history of recent onset of symptoms compatible with COVID-19 pneumonia or have been exposed to the contagion of patients carrying the disease. COVID-19 testing was performed with SARS-CoV-2 nasal-pharyngeal (NP) swabs. Positive subjects to LUS scanning were considered those with non-coascelent B-lines in >3 zones, coalescent B-lines in >3 zones and with iperdensed patchy non-consolidated lungs. Sixty-three percent had positive NP testing and 65% had LUS signs of pulmonary injury. LUS had a sensitivity of 79% in predicting positive NP testing. Sixteen percent of residents tested negative for SARSCoV-2 carried the signs of COVID-19 lung injury at LUS. Selleck GSK1120212 There were 92 patients (61%) with current or recent symptoms.Positivity to LUS scanning was reported in 73% of residents with symptoms, while it was 53% in those without (P=0.016). A positive NP testing was observed in 66% of residents with symptoms and in 57% of those without (P=0.27). We conclude that assessment of LUS by portable wireless scanner echography can be profitability utilized to diagnose lung injury among senior nursing home residents with or without symptoms compatible with COVID-19 pneumonia.Plexiform neurofibromas are rare benign tumors developed from peripheral nervous system often associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. We report the case of multifocal plexiform neurofibromas in a 2-year-old child with cervical mass obstructing the trachea causing respiratory distress. A cervical ultrasound examination was performed followed by enhanced CT and MRI. Imaging revealed an expansive cervical mass extended from the base of the skull to the mediastinum associated with similar pelvic and sacral foraminal masses. The target like MRI aspect on T2-weighted images was suggestive of the neural origin. Biopsy under ultrasound control confirmed the diagnosis of plexiform neurofibroma.
