sed on the probability function of the ROC curves, up to 74% of preirradiation RNA measurements predicted survival with a positive and negative predictive value ranging between 85-100% and associated odds ratios reflecting a 2-3-fold elevated risk for surviving per unit change (cycle threshold value) in gene expression. In conclusion, we identified gender-dependent genes and gene combinations in preirradiation blood samples for survival prediction after irradiation in rhesus macaques. This work integrates cultivation studies of Siberian permafrost and analyses of metagenomes from different locations in the Arctic with the aim of obtaining insights into the community of photosynthetic microorganisms in perennially frozen deposits. Cyanobacteria and microalgae have been described in Arctic aquatic and surface soil environments, but their diversity and ability to withstand harsh conditions within the permafrost are still largely unknown. Community structure of photosynthetic organisms in permafrost sediments was explored using Arctic metagenomes available through the MG-RAST. Sequences affiliated with cyanobacteria represented from 0.25 to 3.03% of total sequences, followed by sequences affiliated with Streptophyta (algae and vascular plants) 0.01-0.45% and Chlorophyta (green algae) 0.01-0.1%. Enrichment and cultivation approaches revealed that cyanobacteria and green algae survive in permafrost and they could be revived during prolonged incubation at low light intensity. Among photosynthetic microorganisms isolated from permafrost, the filamentous Oscillatoria-like cyanobacteria and unicellular green algae of the genus Chlorella were dominant. Our findings suggest that permafrost cyanobacteria and green algae are expected to be effective members of the re-assembled community after permafrost thawing and soil collapse.Due to high metabolic activity, proliferating cells continuously generate free radicals, which induce DNA double-strand breaks (DSB). Fluorescently tagged nuclear foci of DNA repair protein 53 binding protein-1 (53BP1) are used as a standard metric for measuring DSB formation at baseline and in response to environmental insults such as radiation. Here we demonstrate that the background level of spontaneous 53BP1+ foci formation can be modeled mathematically as a function of cell confluence, which is a metric of their proliferation rate. This model was validated using spontaneous 53BP1+ foci data from 72 cultures of primary skin fibroblasts derived from 15 different strains of mice, showing a ∼10-fold decrease from low to full confluence that is independent of mouse strain. On the other hand, the baseline level of spontaneous 53BP1+ foci in a fully confluent cell population was strain-dependent, suggesting genomic associations, and correlated with radiation sensitivity based on previous measurements in the same cell lines. Finally, we have developed an online open-access tool to correct for the effect of cell confluence on 53BP1+ foci-based quantification of DSB. This tool provides guidelines for the number of cells required to reach statistical significance for the detection of DSB induced by low doses of ionizing radiation as a function of confluence and time postirradiation.Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (IGF) is a rare, genetically heterogeneous condition that is usually a part of syndrome or, rarely, an isolated disorder. It is characterized by a slowly progressive, non hemorrhagic, fibrous enlargement of keratinized gingiva which usually begins at the time of eruption of permanent dentition, however very few cases involving the primary teeth have been described in literature. Congenital gingival fibromatosis is very rare condition in which the gingival tissues become thickened and erupting teeth remain submerged beneath hyperplastic tissue masses. This case report discusses the rare case of congenital non syndromic idiopathic gingival fibromatosis in a two year old boy who reported with absence of teeth and incompetent lips. Gingivectomy was done using modified microdissection electrocautery needle to remove the excess gingival tissues. Excised tissue has been examined histologically. The patient was followed up for a period of one year and no recurrence was observed.
The objective was to evaluate the antagonistic effect of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium recovered from five commercial probiotics on the growth of C. albicans.
The Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains of five commercial probiotics were recovered and grown Probio Hp+®, ProBiseis®, Lactipan®, Liolactil®, and Lacteol Fort®; 50 mg of each was hydrated and grown in Lactobacilli MRS (De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe) broth and incubated at 37°C with stirring (120 RPM) for 24 hours. Serial dilutions of 10-1 to 10-7 were made and viability was verified and quantified. For the antagonism tests, a suspension/inoculum of Lactobacillus strains recovered from each commercial preparation (4-30 × 109) and C. albicans ATCC 90028 (1.5-8 × 108) was prepared in MRS broth and incubated for 48 hours at 36°C, then plated on Dextrose Sabouraud Agar with Chloramphenicol and Rogosa Agar and the colony-forming units (CFU) were quantified. Additionally, viability was evaluated using the LIVE/DEAD® Yeast and Bacterial Viability kit.
The probiotic that produced the highest acidity of the medium was Lactipan®, followed by Probiseis® and Liolactil®, while Probio Hp+® showed the least change. Probiseis® was determined to have the highest growth of probiotic bacteria and the highest inhibition on C. albicans, followed by Lactipan®; Liolactil® and ProbioHp+® showed the least effect. In fluorescence tests, ProBiseis® showed the best effect, followed by Liolactil® and Lactipan®; Probio Hp+® had less of an effect.

To investigate the effect of two methods of propolis administration on plaque accumulation and microbial count as well as patient acceptance of each vehicle.
A randomized clinical trial with two parallel arms was used with a sample of 60 high caries risk children 6-8 years old. Children were divided randomly into two groups. Group I Children who received propolis chewing gum and instructed to chew it twice daily for at least twenty minutes, for two weeks. Group II children who received propolis mouthwash and instructed to rinse twice daily for one minute. A plaque index was recorded and a plaque sample was collected from all participants at base line and after two weeks of treatment. All participants were asked to rate the preparation they received during treatment period on a Visual Analogue Scale chart.
Data showed that propolis had a significant effect on reducing plaque scores and colony counts in both vehicles. There was no significant difference between both vehicles neither on plaque reduction nor on microbial count. However children preferred the gum formula.
Propolis in both vehicles reduced plaque accumulation and microbial count which recommends its use as an antimicrobial agent in different vehicles.

The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate the relationship between mandibular symphysis bone density (BD) and mandibular growth direction in adolescent patients by facilitating the measurement of cortical and cancellous BDs at the mandibular symphysis using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
224 adolescent patients (98 males and 126 females) were categorized by sex, age, and mandibular growth direction. Cortical and cancellous BDs were measured along with a sagittal slice at multiple locations.
Females exhibited higher cortical BD than males at menton (Me, P =0.002). Patients with a posterior growth direction exhibited a higher cortical BD than those with anterior and normal growth direction at Me (P <0.021, P <0.001, respectively), pogonion (Pog, P =0.037, P =0.037, respectively) and genion (Ge, P =0.007, P =0.008, respectively). Patients with a posterior growth direction exhibited a higher cortical BD than those with anterior growth direction at B point (P =0.009).
Significant differences in BD were identified across anthropometric categories. These findings may be useful in determining mandibular growth direction in adolescents.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is considered a functional disorder with multifactorial aspects. The goal of this study was to investigate if genetic polymorphisms in the COL2A1 gene could be associated with TMD in adolescents.
The case group (TMD-affected) included individuals diagnosed with any of the following TMD subgroups according to the RDC/TMD criteria myofascial pain, disc displacements and arthralgia. Genomic DNA for molecular analysis was extracted from buccal cells and genetic polymorphisms in COL2A1 were genotyped by real time polymerase chain reactions using the TaqMan assay. Data were analyzed using the Epi Info 3.5.7 and Stata software.
249 subjects were included in this study (148 subjects "affected" by TMD). There were no significant differences between the affected and unaffected individual (p>0.05), for TMD, arthralgia and myofascial pain however, rs2276454 was borderline in the genotype distribution (p=0.07) and was associated with disc displacement (p=0.03) in the allelic distribution. Recessive model showed significant differences between groups for with disc displacement (p=0.02).
Genetic polymorphisms in COL2A1 are not associated with myofascial pain, arthralgia or TMD in adolescents but this study provides evidence that rs2276454 is involved in the disc displacement of the temporomandibular joint.

Alkaline phosphatase enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has been shown to improve bone hypomineralization for patients with HPP, although its dental effects are unknown. A 20-month-old Japanese boy diagnosed with infantile HPP was referred to our clinic because of early exfoliation of primary teeth. The patient had been followed by a pediatrician since the age of 3 months, due to slow weight gain. At the age of 12 months, primary incisors showed sudden exfoliation; at the age of 19 months, a diagnosis of HPP was made based on bone and dental manifestations. ERT was initiated at the age of 21 months. The patient demonstrated stable periodontal conditions of primary molars that erupted after initiation of ERT, due to improved alveolar bone and tooth mineralization. Thus, ERT may improve both dental and systemic conditions.
