Suicidality is an important contributor to disease burden worldwide. We examine the developmental and environmental correlates of reported suicidal ideation at age 15 and develop a new evolutionary model of suicidality based on life history trade-offs and hypothesized accompanying modulations of cognition. Data were derived from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (Statistics Canada) which collected information on children's social, emotional, and behavioral development in eight cycles between 1994 and 2009. We take a model selection approach to understand thoughts of suicide at age 15 (N ≈ 1,700). The most highly ranked models include social support, early life psychosocial stressors, prenatal stress, and mortality cues. Those reporting consistent early life stress had 2.66 greater odds of reporting thoughts of suicide at age 15 than those who reported no childhood stress. Social support of the primary caregiver, neighborhood cohesion, nonkin social support of the adolescent, and the number of social support sources are all associated with suicidal thoughts, where greater neighborhood cohesion and social support sources are associated with a reduction in experiencing suicidal thoughts. Mother's prenatal smoking throughout pregnancy is associated with a 1.5 greater odds of suicidal thoughts for adolescents compared to children whose mother's reported not smoking during pregnancy. We discuss these findings in light of evolutionary models of suicidality. This study identifies both positive and negative associations on suicidal thoughts at age 15 and considers these in light of adaptive response models of human development. Using the 2013-2014 data cycles of Medical Monitoring Project, we assessed the weighted prevalence of drinking patterns by socio-demographic, clinical and reproductive characteristics of 946 WLWH. Logistic regression was used to calculate unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Overall, 39% of WLWH reported current drinking and 10% reported binge drinking. Compared to non-drinkers, binge drinkers were less likely to adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART) or be virally suppressed. In multivariate analyses, binge drinking among WLWH was associated with smoking, drug use, and reduced ART adherence compared to non-drinkers, increasing the likelihood of negative clinical outcomes. This high reactivity can be exemplified in the outside world by one of its consequences, rust formation. In cells, this redox-active iron is involved in the formation of lipid radicals. Recent Advances Defect or insufficient membrane-protective mechanisms can result in iron-catalyzed excessive lipid peroxidation and subsequent cell death, now conceptualized as ferroptosis. Growing reports propose the detrimental role of iron and ferroptosis in many experimental disease models such as ischemia-reperfusion, acute and chronic organ injuries. Critical Issues This review first provides a snapshot of iron metabolism, followed by a brief introduction of the molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis, as an iron-dependent lipid peroxidation-driven mode of cell death. Upon describing how iron dysbiosis affects ferroptosis induction, we elaborate on the detrimental role of the iron-ferroptosis axis in several diseases. Future Directions Despite compelling findings suggesting a role of ferroptosis in experimental animal models, the exact contribution of ferroptosis in human contexts still needs further investigation. Development of reliable ferroptosis biomarkers will be an important step in characterizing ferroptosis in human disease. This can provide therapeutic opportunities aiming at targeting ferroptosis in human diseases.

To evaluate the state of evidence for the beneficial and harmful effects of Tai Chi on non-motor disorders in post-stroke patients.

We searched seven electronic literature databases and one clinical registry platform to collect data from randomized controlled trials published up to July 26, 2020.

A total of 11 randomized controlled trials with 723 stroke survivors met the inclusion criteria, of which six were included in the meta-analysis. Among the 11 studies, one was assessed as "low", eight were assessed as "moderate", and only two were assessed as "high" for the assessment of methodologic quality. Compared to patients who received conventional rehabilitation therapy, those who received Tai Chi training showed greater improvement in scores of depression (standardized mean difference (SMD) [95% confidence interval (CI)] = 0.36 [0.10, 0.61], Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation [GRADE] very low). There were no differences in the improvements in post-stroke global mental disorders (mean difference (MD [95% CI] = 6.15 [-3.05, 15.36], GRADE moderate) or sleep disorders (MD [95% CI] = 0.33 [-1.51, 1.81], GRADE low) between Tai Chi and control groups.
